Despite the low number of posts ive been flyin this sukker off and on since I was 19, and im 27 now........thats enough time to be blown out of the sky by alot of good flyers {and lousy ones} and to learn a trick or two in the cockpit to at-least average out the death.
Whats to follow I hope will be a collection of tips and tricks by some of the pilots here, perhaps helping some destitute newb that frankly doesnt know any better.
Most everyone knows how to set up thier views {which if done correctly can be a giant improvment in visibility} some aircraft/vehicles though by thier nature dont have a decent forward view to speak of, LA-7,A6M,FW190,ostwind,...., so when your pulling a bunch of G's and the bad guy is sliding out of your line of sight hold down "Page Up" sliding your view up and over the gunsite in most A/C, this removes some of the obstruction caused by the nose......it also removes your gunsite,........
Which is where ill make another point: YOU DONT NEED A RETICLE i.e. the little crosshair thingy..........get a felt tip marker {that can be whiped off of course} and mark a single dot over where the crosshair is, then go to options and and turn Alpha way up leaving a ghost of your old reticle.
The mouse cursor can be used the same way as the felt tip pen, but I find that it blocks some visibility as well so its really a matter of what works best for you.
This helps in alot of ground vehicles as well because the turret/hull blocks your view lateraly in most cases, use of PAGEUP with the the mouse cursor as a gunsite is an absolute MUST in the ostwind, but im sure all you smarty pants with all the trigger time allready knew that... so what am I doing here? laters...

Another handy use of the mouse cursor is to augment the horizontal marks in a tanks gunsite, those marks are there so you can recall egsactly at what range setting your last round was fired at, and adjust the next one fired... over D3200, well then you lose the use of those marks, but the 88m in a tiger is lethal much farther out than 3200 against an nme tank.
When it becomes obviouse that the nme tank/hanger you are firing at is outside of the gunsites usable range move the mouse cursor over the target you intend to hit and fire....observe where the last round landed, adjust your aim accordingly, then "move" the cursor over the target again and fire, chances are within 2 or 3 shots your gonna be on target.
The mouse makes a handy way of figuring out the correct solution in Cruiser guns as well, as long as you can "see" what your shooting at
I learnd this handy bit of info in an 8 player arena last year when I couldnt figure out for the life of me how a tank was bombing me from a totaly unrealistic range.
Hopfully this will bring equality back to the game for the newbs that give up thier lives so that we can pad our scores.:)

Or, hold the numpad 8 key down, adjust your view all the way forward and up until just the very center dot is left on the top of your gunsite. Save the head position. This way, you can hold the 8 key (or your "look forward" joystick button, if you have one) and it'll immediately snap to that view, but will go back to the standard forward view when it's released.

I use an X52 and have the above setup and the pinkie switch set to "look forward." That way when a con is under my nose, I push the pinkie switch and can see him.

Ive tried the marker thing but I never had anything but a monster point to use. Maybe a fine tip would be nice, but I do like OOz does by adjusting the gunsight/head up.

I don't think the point of the gunsight stays exactly where the rounds hit. Try this with the .target command. Set the target to your convergence range, fire a burst, then raise your head position as high as you can and fire another. Your hits are no longer hitting at the "dot spot". Close, but not exactly a perfect aim.

All the gunsite is is a point of reference anyway Krusty; just as hard to learn to hit with sinking bullets on a level gunsight as it is on a slightly-off gunsight.

When I used to tank alot, I would use this tactic for a while, but it kept messing up because I constantly moved the mouse inadvertently. Instead, I would just move the text box from the lower part of the screen up so that the top was my aimpoint. Seemed to work a bit better. Good luck to ya.
