grr. i can't get the military channel logo!
-
I disagree with some of the ranking they do on that show.
-
I disagree with some of the "facts" on that channel as well as on History Channel. To each his own.
-
i wish i had the channel  but with this post i have found taloyer's age and its no in the double digits.:D :lol Plus, its mostly propaganda.
-
HELL YEAH I DISAGREE! They ranked, if I remember right, the Tiger as like... 3rd tank!!! Sure it got zero mileage, but come ON!!! For a WWII tank, that kicked prettythang!!!
-
okay first of all my age is in the double diggets, why do u say though?
second r u exsperts? Do u know all of the stuff like firepower, service length, production, fear factor, mobility, and stuff like that, most likely not, but i did even befor i say any of those shows! and finally the tiger was 4th i belive, but the fact is it was produced the least of any tank, its mobillity is bad, and so was service lenght, sence it was a later tank! But i bet none of u disagree that the T-34 is the number 1 tank on the tank one, the B-52 number 1 for the bombers, the Iowa type battleship number 1 for fighting ships, now do u? :( :o opps i should not have said that, ow well! well i for got not to tell u but it is kind of money, :lol i meant funny!:lol :lol :rofl :rofl :rofl

You have to take alot of the facts on those channels with a grain of salt . To them the only WWII fighter worth talking about is a P-51 .
-
hey there r many worthy fighters from all of military history! and if u like the P51, why is ur avatar a P38?

ok, being a military and history buff with more facts about these things locked away in my brain than the dadgum encyclopedia...my history professor said that, hehe....I love to watch military and history channels, but I dont always agree with the ratings...for instance...on the top ten fighters, the f22 is actually on the list! now why would you ever rank something that hasnt even seen action yet in the top ten? there's no point to it, really. I mean, I love the plane, but that slot maybe should have gone to something like the Mig-29, which, when it is flown by a decent pilot, (ie, the Luftwaffe migs) can hold its own against just about anything in the sky.
my opinion mind you, but think about it before you start screaming at me

No need to scream at anyone -- your "opinion" vs anyone elses "opinion" is exactly what is wrong with top 10 lists like these. Especially for a program designed to appeal to the masses. All you get are "conventional wisdoms" rather than fact-based, unbiased appraisals.
Check out the gutless "tie" of the two Korean War fighters, for example. Or the omission of the Panther from the top 10 tanks.
Not to mention the errors of fact -- calling the T-34/76 the best tank, then showing a lot of T-34/85 footage, or claiming the "high velocity 76mm gun" could easily defeat the heaviest German armor "at range."
Interesting shows, to be sure, but hardly worth taking as a serious assessment IMO.
-
well the first top ten thing is now here, sorry for the long wait , but here r the top ten tanks!
# 10: M4 Sherman
# 9: Merkava
# 8: Soviet T-54/55
# 7: Challenger
# 6: Panzer 4
# 5: Centurion
# 4: The fist tank ever! the British WW1 Tank (there is no real name for it!)
# 3: Tiger
# 2: M1 Abrams
# 1: u know this already i accedentlly told u guys! T-34

The Top Ten shows on Military channel are teh suck.
I could barely make it through the top 10 fighters one, the data was totally wrong and their assessments were stupid.
Only 2 WWII birds made it in, the Spit and the P51.
P51 was #1 though.

this pittsburgh kid thinks the military channel is the military bible...
IMO i think that channel needs more documentaries for german epuipment..
I have yet to see a 109 documentary... only WW2 fighter i see on that damm channel is p-51's and spits...

They have a "Wings of the Luftwaffe" show, don't remember seeing anything exclusively on the 109 though. They focus more on the 190 series. I never see anything on the P38 on that channel. I think all they know about the P38 is that it has 2 engines and shot down Yamamoto.
I can imagine some of the shows you would see if people like us made shows for that channel. "What Was the Best Fighter of WW2?" And charts would be shown and all of that, but soon would degenerate to "Luftwhiner!" and "P38 Cultist"
-
i have seen a 109 vs. spitfire (first versions only) it is on a show called greatest military clashes! it also had sherman vs. tiger!
-
the sherman was outclassed by tiger's WAY to much. They should said kid with rock vs Sherman and it might stand a chance.

no matter what the sherman wouldn't even need the cannon, a few shots with the .30 cal, kid with rock is dead! but that would be a funny match up!
and when u say outclassed, ur wrong, we shose mobility and production over fire power and protection!
the sherman was nice looking, cool, and maintainable tank so stop tearing up the sherman! (they have fealing 2 u know!!)

Did a sherman actually ever DESTROY a Panther much less a Tiger? Heck even with that 76mm they came up with could disable them but could it really destroy a tiger? I think not I read that there are no reports of the tiger's front armour of being pierced. In addition, what size cannon did the first Sherman have? I meen those were like spitwads on Panzer's. I still say the sherman is a Piece of Crap considering how puny it was. To my EXTREMLY limited knowledge of history and regular academics I belive Infantry, planes, and artillery destroyed more tanks than Shermans did. I meen I read a report of 3 M10's ambushing a Tiger firing on the run and got to point blank from the sides and the rear and it just turned its turret Blam! Rinse and repeat and all 3 M10's were left in smoldering wrecks.
-
There was a British adaption of the Sherman called the Firefly, had a 25lber gun, one of the best weapons in the war, would open a Tiger like a can of spam.

Yes.
Yes.
US 76mm could theoretically pierce the thickest front mantlet armor (the thickest) at 100 meters, rear hull at 1000m or more IIRC. This assumes the correct HVAP ammunition.
Standard Sherman had a 75mm gun that was designed off a WW1 artillary piece. It was meant to be an infantry support vehicle, not a tank killer, which job was to fall to the Tank Destroyers. The 75mm had an exceptional HE and Smoke capability for the size of the gun, but armor peircing ability was lacking. US armor doctrine was the "flaw", not the tank, which was clearly capable of carrying a more powerful gun. But even the underpowered 75mm could kill a Tiger or Panther from the side or rear at point blank range, and was more than capable against the Pzkw IV and lighter tanks / armored vehicles.
The encounter you describe is unlikely if the M-10s,which would have had the 76mm gun, had the correct ammunition. At point blank range, even standard steel shot should have penetrated the sides or rear. Sounds more like a failure of the crews to engage properly, or the Tiger was just extremely lucky. I can dig up a story of an 88mm round bouncing off the front armor of a Sherman - doesn't make it commonplace. Strange things happen in war.

well sence 50mm would be like an ww2 early anti-tank weapon how do u fight those on a plane? Okay i have a question what would u guys like to hear second: bombers, fighting ships, or infantry fighting vehicles?

the firefly only had a 17lber shell, anyways...

guess what do u want to see of the top ten next? out of these 3, bombers, fighting ships, or infantry fighting vehicles (transports like the m3 halftrack)?

Phillipines? No, the closest would have been Iwo, or around there. The B29s lifted from the Marianas. The Phillipines would have been too far.

hello try reading or listening befor u talk, the b-29 was desinged to go very long distances with enough fuel to go back! the b29 took off from i thing a hawiian island made it to one of the phillapines but the abomb ones were ordered back to hawaii to load the abombs and for the missions, but they only landed back at the phillapines. if u have watched "world's deadliest aircraft" and it was about the b29 that is basicly what it said!

You need to take your own advice.
The A-bomb B-29s flew out of Tinian in the Marianas. The A-bomb B-29s were also stripped of all guns and turrets except for the tail position.
-
I KNEW THAT I JUST WATCH THE THING BUT I WAS MORE RIGHT

What are you babbling about? The A-bombs were delivered by a USN cruiser to Tinian.
Stop getting your history from the, err, History Channel > visit a library.

Two B-29s escorted the Enola Gay as far as Japan. Then they turned back and let EG fly to target alone. They basically relied on speed, altitude (31,000 feet) and comparatively cruddy Japanese radar for protection.
IIRC, they were spotted, but no defenses were scrambled as a single aircraft was obviously on a recon mission and posed no threat . . .
-
aAcorrding to my english teacher they were tens of thousands of feet up, therefore they weren't visible nor could you hear the B29 when it came to drop on Hiroshima. From what i've heard it was relatively cloudy, 31,000 still sounds fairly visible. B29's were also a common recon/weather plane flying over Hiroshima thus no thought was given after the air raid siren.
(Teachers are good with airplane facts, according to my 9th grade science teacher, the Wright Flyer flew 120 miles in 3 hours:eek: )

I was lucky enough to have lunch with a gentleman from .. I believe it was the 41st fighter squadron. He flew both Jugs, and later Ponies in the Pacific. He described escorting B-29s, downing a Betty that his leader missed on the first pass (they vulched it while it was landing), and being airborne, well south of Hiroshima on a different mission when the a-bomb was dropped.
So, going by his accounts, it sounds pretty reasonable that P-51s were escorting B-29s. He also said he didn't really prefer one fighter over the other, and both in his opinion were the "best fighters of the war".

First off smart prettythang, you said the closest base for the P-51 to escort the b-29. I damn well know the B-29 could takeoff from the US, it was about a 14-16 hour flight, but you said the P51s took off from the Phillipines. You were wrong, but of course you go to do typo's and rant and rave about the same single sentence in 3 sentences.

(sigh) i all ways have to tell u the right thing! well most of the B29s that flew normal bombing missions took-off from philipiean islands, but the B29s that delivered the abombs took-off from the U.S. (boxscar & somthing gey were the B29s that delivered the abombs)

(sigh) i all ways have to tell u the right thing! well most of the B29s that flew normal bombing missions took-off from philipiean islands, but the B29s that delivered the abombs took-off from the U.S. (boxscar & somthing gey were the B29s that delivered the abombs) [/B]

No!! Stop being the village idiot.
The B-29s that bombed Japan with conventional bombs flew from the island of Saipan(73rdBW), Guam(312thBW) and Tinian(313thBW) in the Marianas group. The islands were about 1500 miles from Tokyo, a range which the B-29s could just about manage.
All B-29s came from the continental USA as that is where they were made.
Boxscar and Enola Gay took off from Tinian with their A bombs.
Now if you are capable of reading and have the comprehension read this link: http://www.csd.uwo.ca/~pettypi/elevon/baugher_us/b029-11.html

But Milo, he SAW it on the Military Channel! It HAS to be true!!!!
-
ew i was right with the names though! ew!:rofl in ur face!
-
This thread really should be closed. A wasn't the F4U going to be the main escort plane in ETO but the Air Force wanted their own plane?
-
technally the f4u was in navy and airforce! but mainly the navy.
that is true! the airforce was selfish in world war 2 when they heard the naval planes were going to escort them they where like "no,no,no,no! If anything the escort plane is going to be our highly sucsessful fighters not a fighter i have never heard of befor! the escort planes are going to be our P-51Ds, P-40s, P-47s, and maybe P-38s!"
and the only reason the B-29s had caualtes is because of the weird engines!

No because of the ammount of flak and bugs with the early versions, and crashs.

Don't pat yourself on the back to hard. You are WRONG many more times than your are ever right.

 The only country that flew the F4U in their airforce was New Zealand.
-
shut up! i knew it was inthe airforce of the U.S., because next time u fly it, it has the airforce logo on it
-
Technically thats the US Logo on it, and the USN logo. avacado.

:rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl You knew WRONG (again).
No it was the US Navy and the US Marines that flew the F4U Corsair. The US Army Airforce DID NOT fly the F4U Corsair. Anyone with a shread of intelligence knows that the insignia on all American a/c is the same > blue star in a white circle with bars. If it was in the airforce then its designation would begin with a 'P' (ie P-38, P-47, P-51). The USN used a different a/c designation system (ie F4F, F6F, F4U).
-
Well, the Royal Navy flew them ;)
-
okay lets forget about the f4u!
ow and this is the airforce logo if u forgot! it is just a quick paint!

Milo,
Might I suggest a more productive use of your time than arguing with taylor, perhaps beating your head against a wall or hitting yourself repeatedly with a mallet. :D :D
