I work on a Navy base. Parked the truck after lunch and then went to leave four hours later and this is what I find:

This is just not the kind of thing you expect to find on a military facility in broad daylight.

WTF hit you?
That took more than just a 'tap' to do that damage:O
-
It's a shame, but it's a japanese truck. I used to "rub" slowpokes with my ford ranger. the one time I did it with my toyota tacoma it cost me a front bumper and an A/C hose. you can't tap anything with the japanese trucks. maybe the guy/girl didn't even know they did it, then again maybe they have read some of your posts on this bbs.
-
Something tall with a chrome bumper. I'm betting a truck or possibly a van.
-
I won't be putting a stock bumper back on... it's getting this:
-
that will just transfer the hit to the unibody, you'll need a frame alignment next.
-
Ouch, any chance that region is under video surveillance? Maybe catch who dinged you?
Looks like a nasty hit

It's not a unibody. It's ladder-frame.
-
it will still transfer the impact's energy to it and potentially cause the frame to disalign. I would inquire about that prior to going the expense. I thought the same thing because I like rubbing people in traffic as opposed to laying on the horn because a rub is more effective at clearing out the space ahead of you. my bud at Miami Custom Bodyshop strongly urged that I not purchase that for the reason I explained above. I will wait for the my next truck purchase (which will be an American) to return to my rubbing ways.

I'll look into it. There's no shortage of Xterra owners that have after-market bumpers.
-
here also, on just about all trucks, and they do look cool.
-
Well... I have more practical reasons for going to a steel bumper. Hi-lift jacks and better recovery points for straps.
-
they sure are and also a good place to mount a winch
-
er wench ...no winch, winch
-
Damn Sandy!
Storch you rub me with your truck, you'll be picking up your teeth. :)
-
Sandy, I belive most people are habitual about their parking spaces and you might be able to spot the offending vehicle tomorrow or next week. I feel for ya though, I have had that happen a few times (4) and they were all on base, lucky for me 1 the guy actually came in the clinic and looked for me to let me know he hit my car. The 2nd one, my 1st wife was sitting in the car and the guy backed his truck in to the side of my car 3 times as he tried to get out of the parking lot ( yes he backed into it and then pulled forward and backed into it again, 3 times, he only stopped because friends ran to the driver's side and told the guy it wasnt a speed bump) :lol
-
It's a small office and I know everyone that typically parks in the spots near me.
I don't believe for a second that any people I know and work with are responsible.
-
I can't see the picture:cry
-
I bet there's some sort of surveillance camera on the lot. Ask the SP's.
I don't know if they make them for Jap trucks or not, but I'd reccomend a Ranch Hand bumper. There's not a truck in the oilfield without one around here.

Get an ARB.
BTW, the 2006 Xtrerra is a fully boxed frame and Sandy's is a Ladder frame and not unibody. The ARB's are designed to shore up the frame in front of the front crossmember. An ARB is bulletproof. I believe they are around $800 for an Xterra. A few of the guys in the club have them, I wish they made em for the CJ7, I'd buy one.

or perhaps you would be picking your own, :)
-
Storch you can't go around hitting other cars. You're going to get yourself in trouble.
-
not a hit a "rub" did it for years until I got the toyota
-
lol, i can just see storch "rubbing" a unmarked police car :rofl
-
So when they pull over after you "rub" them, do you pull over too, or just leave?
I'm not so sure "it wasn't a hit and run, it was a rub and run" would fly to the cop/court.

Thanks for the tip. I've been reading through the Xterra forums. Couple of guys there that have ARBs are saying they would go with Shrock given the choice again. I've got some time to make a decision.

did that once. he didn't even write me up.

I pull over if there is a need to, most times people would just gesture. again it's a rub not a hit. the ones that would really want to kill me are the soccer moms. they are by far the most aggressive and unforgiving all while they hold up traffic putting on makeup and simulataneously talking on a mobile phone. You guys mean to say there is no rubbing occurring where you live? It's pretty common here.

ya nice rub a soccer mom in a van full of kids cause a crash kill bunch of kids just so you can get where you are going 30 secs faster what a outstanding human being dont even try and defend yourself cause you cant
-
clearly you guys don't know what a rub is. one car is stationary with the driver distracted or whatever the car behind (me) releases the clutch slowly for a soft tap, a rub usually but not always under 5mph. the one that I messed my bumper and A/C line on was on another pickup and probably at 3mph. the fords could handle it the toyotas don't seem to be able to.If you've never experienced one don't worry one will be coming to your town soon. in fact try it yourself it's fun.
-
Thats what happens when you park in a lot too close to Navy guys. Too used to boats, they cant steer fast enough and are used to bumping into things to stop. Heck, look for rope marks on the bumper, he may have tied up to you while he was doing some business. :)

Hehe, and you still managed, with a "soft tap" to tear up a bumper and a A/C hose on your truck? LOL
That means you hit em at ............. oh at least 3mph. :)
-
At what speed (not relative to the rubee, but overall speed) would you execute a rub?
What would the jolt in the cabin be comperable to?
-
the rubee is at a light and is eating guff, on a phone whatever he is stationary, I simply release the clutch with no accelleration the truck rolls forward apply clutch but not the brakes. what happened with the toyota is that the A/C compressor kicked on and accellerated the engine a bit as I said probably up to 3mph or so when I disengaged the clutch I was gonna tap the brakes but didn't. it wouldn't have been a problem in a ranger. that model year toyota runs the dryer and hoses right by the evaporator any hit takes it out. that rub set me back about $600.00 there is seldomly any damage at all to the rubee's vehicle as it is really a soft tap, in most cases. in the cabin you feel the impact, look up see the light has changed look back and drive on. again it's fairly common here.
-
Nothin' a little duct tape can't cure. ;)
-
Hi Sandy,
Sorry some one did that to you and didn't leave a note.
Here's a personal anecdote. A few months after my conversion, I was pulling out of a parking space in my Bronco II. A rather pretty and well endowed girl walked out of another store and dropped her keys, unfortunately I did a double take when she bent over to pick them up, and in the process felt a . Due to my stupid ogling, I'd backed into the side fender of another parked car. No one else other than me had noticed.
For a long second I considered just putting it into drive and leaving. Then I had three simultaneous thoughts, one, although no person may have seen, there was still One who sees everything, two that is not exactly the right application of "do unto others..." and your conscience is not going to let you rest, and three you could probably use a little chastening for your roaming eye young man. So I got out and left a note indicating I was the idiot who had backed into his car with my name and address. A few hours later, I got a slightly amazed phone call, and managed to work out a deal whereby I paid for his repairs out of pocket. It ended up costing me over $2000 dollars, but I've found that you can't put a price on a clear conscience.
Oh and BTW Sandy, it wasn't me this time. ;)

Ok, fair enough. I thought you were executing NASCAR style taps at freeway speeds. That, I could see, could get somebody's panties in a bunch.

LOL

our rubs here barely receive notice, again the soccer moms (and the hyper-emotional types) want to kill you sometimes, most everyone else just shrugs them off. occassionally they used to produce spontaneous fisticuffs but you don't see many of those anymore.

yup I'm a redneck who may want to take a trip to san francisco and really hit your car with a rental then toss my apology through your windshield tied to a 5lb weight, what was your address again? you must be one of those emotional types we read about here in my beloved Florida. :D

Well, here's a story where no horns are tooted....
Living in the Pacific Palisades around the turn of the millenium, I'd driven my then pristine 92 Acura legend down to the Vons grocery store at the Int of Sunset and PCH. The parking lot was a bit crowded, and I got stuck between two other cars looking for spots closer to the store, when I notice a late-90s Mustang backing out of a spot. Problem is, the spot's directly behind my rear left quarter and the douchbag behind the wheel's not looking in his rear view.
I feel the bump. The guy in the mustang wakes up, we exchange eye contact. A few seconds later, the car in front of me moves on, and I immediately start looking for a spot, any spot, so I can get out, assess the damage and deal with the driver of the mustang (I hate it when people involved in a fender bender block traffic settling their affairs, so I try not to). Anyway, I've gone about ten feet when I notice the mustang pull completely out of his spot, aim his car towards Sunset and gun his engine. I'm pointed in the opposite direction, so even if I wanted to give chase, it would have beenimpossible.
With my head turned, I watch him as he reaches the parking lot exit and guns it to merge onto Sunset. He merges....right into a tow truck doing about 30. He's hit from behind, on the rear left corner of all places, and propelled into the curb.
No, I didn't laugh or think what a wonderful stroke of charma it was. I also didn't bother getting his insurance info for the scratch he put on my car.
-
Yeah, some jackahooch "rubbed" my car a few times. Alas we moved off that street and we have a 3 car driveway.
-
unfortunately my "bumpers" are made of plastic, if you "rub" me you will do damage, then you and i will have a "discussion".
-
yup that's one of the drawbacks to these newer plastic bumpers in the first place they don't "bump" well at all. secondly even the slightest bump does create damage. a man not paying attention to what he was doing slightly tapped our expedition in the front left side slightly making a concave in the plastic. the poor unfortunate jamaican has no insurance and I wasn't about to waste three hours while the pembroke pines police responded so I sent him on his merry way. that tap would cost $1500. to repair. I like the way it looks though it gives the truck character and it's staying (so is $1500.00 in my pocket) I considered reporting through allstate but I don't want my premiums raised. besides there will probably a bigger collision in this truck's future, given driving conditions in the tri-county area it's simply a matter of time. or I could just cruise upstate and look for john :D
-
Why don't you take off the bumper and tap that portion out?
-
considered that but it simply looks like too much work. I'd rather spend my discreationary time doing other things. (I work with my hands coming home and working with my hands holds little appeal) maybe I'll post a photo of the hit using my never been used photo hanger account. It's actually a very good looking ding it distinguishes the truck from the 10000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000 other expeditions out there.
-
I'm going to tie explosives to my rear bumper, so if you ever try to rub me it will blow you up.
-
Oh I understand, a friend knocked my car with her bus...err van. It's got a nice 8 inch dent in the front right fender, there is some bending/scratches in both left rear quarter panels. **** happens.
When I was being a "mechanic" this summer I really had no intention on fixinf stuff when I got home most of the time.

that sounds like fun, but you'll have to wait until I buy a new truck in 2009. the toyota isn't for rubbing it blows up without the need for explosives. sooooo for the meantime you and all you materialistic thing lovers are safe. but only just barely :D
-
Buy a golf cart Storch, or a go cart, you can still rub n run.
-
I got a chance to take some pictures this morning with better light than last night.

I spoke to the LT for the base police this morning. He seemed genuinely inspired... that or just extremely bored. He told the officer to patrol the nearby parking lots, interview the people that worked in the area, check with motor pool, the local auto shops, and the rental agencies. Their whole thing was, "This isn't an accident anymore. This is a crime." The insurance hasn't done their "adjustment" yet, but I'll guess that we're looking at a loss of $3000+. So, yeah... crime sounds about right.
-
Did you remember to clutch your neck and complain of neck pain?
:) (I know, I know....it happened while you were away.....)
Hope they catch the hit n runner, Sandy
-
every dent in my car happened when it was parked, nobody ever left a note, they are all small dents but it adds up when you have them fixed.

That is laugh out loud funny!!!:rofl
as for "rubbin"...
who hasnt looked around in traffic and said "hmmm I'd like to do a little rubbin' on that soccer mom" :t
seriously tho ... that damage has noodly appendage written all over it! Just a lil love tap from a supreme being !:p
-
that looks like a pretty hard hit in those second photos sandy, dang shame too.
-
Maybe they saw your license plate and thought it was a terrorists truck. Look for vehicles with a W'04 sticker and you'll find the culprit.
-
Look for Florida plates. Those 'necks think it's NASCAR or something. :)

Reparations are complete. Shrock took twice as long as they estimated to build the bumper.

Holy crap! You really made sure you got a bfb this time! Nice!
Oh, I sent the video off to you yesterday, Sandy, you should get it in the mail tomorrow. 28 minutes long. Let me know how you like the shots to the music you suggested. I really wanted to use "Mama said knock you out" but was annexed by the wife and a team mom when I gave them a preview. :(

Nice body and paint work! You must be happy with that Sandman?
Any word or ideas about who was responsible?
-
Not a clue who did it.

Last time I ever tried anything like a 'rub' the vehicle (which was driven by a firefighter having a bad day) freaked out because his infant daughter was in the back seat, in a car seat no less. An abmulance was called (I suspect they laughed at him), police were there and of course my insurance company got in the picture. I stepped away from interaction at that point and let the insurance take over. I had photographs all ready to send showing no evidence of damage, even to the bumber paint. Turns out all he wanted was another child seat ($80.00).
Btw, people get quite agitated when you 'rub' them while going 75 mph. I really don't know why, but they do. I don't recommend anthing like a 'rub' from my experience. As an aside, my truck of choice is GMC.
Regards,
Malta

No, you will get your bellybutton shot in a heartbeat for that crap here. Are ****ing kidding me with this? Youre nuts old man:D
-
just rubbed a guy yesterday for being a slowpoke at a light. smoking with one hand, cellphone held by his shoulder while writing something, almost blowing the green arrow. little tap, looks up sees grill, drives on pulls to the right starts to say something but thinks better of it. got behind and call 911 I suppose. he still caused a line of cars to miss their arrow. they probably thought it was the delivery truck (me) that was asleep at the wheel. lots of folks leaning on the horn as I followed the guy through a now red light.

Nice bumper Sandy, did you see my post with my and my bro in law changing a tire on his X on a trail?
Second time I used my highlift, lol.
His schrockworks sliders worked great as a jack point.

why didn't you spend the money to just buy a less gay vehicle?

Funny story about rubbing.
My friends and I always used to do that to each other, you can "bump" someone pretty hard with the rubber bumper the 68 and 69 GTOs have on them.
My best bud had a 89 S10 blazer, he backed into me once, so the next time I was behind him, I bumped him then push his all 4 tires locked blazer into the intersection (late no trafic).
Once we all got nice cars we stopped, then I got the jeep and it has nice rubber blocks(that will dent ****ty GM bumpers on 2000 to current fullsize trucks and SUVs) so I figure I will bump my budy in his little suzuki sam, I do.... he flips me off, pulls three feet up and puts it in revers and guns it right into me lol!
Notice I only have one fog light. Thats the result, we were both laughing our ass's off over it. Jeep used ****ty plastic mounts.
a pair of KCs is going on this weekend.
