Title: Bay Area Gun Whackos - Labor Day Shoot
Post by: FUNKED1 on September 01, 2006, 01:46:02 AM
I crossposted this on our forum (http://www.northoltwing.com/shootingclub/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=1)
Sat, Sun, or Mon?
I'm shooting milsurp 30.06 now (steel jacket) so Livermore is out.  I'm thinking Castro Valley, but if anybody wants to nominate their home range (Makarov9?), any place with pistol and rifle lines is cool.  Let's do it.

Los Altos shooting range - in the Los Gatos hills. Nice place.

Buuuuut......The O-C is paintballing Saturday up at Bear Creek, so if you feel like something more challenging then sitting on your bellybutton shooting at something which doesn't retaliate - (http://www.bearcreekpaintball.com)  Sat, 0830-1500.

I'll be at the Los Altos range on Sat around 10:30. I'll bring a bunch of jugs and cans for the 40 yrd tin can range. Always fun making jugs dance with high-power weapons.

Funked may now be a communist, but he has a nice pair of M1 Garands. We had a good day at the range today. He brought his pops and two friends, all real nice guys. We shot for around 6 hours. Once they got the Garands sighted-in, we headed to the 40 yrd tin can range and blew the crap out of bottles and cans. We finished off with the pistol range. Damn I need lots of practice with my pistols. I'm a piss-poor shot. Much better with rifles. Anyway, we need to continue these Bay Area Gun Nut meetings in a more regular interval.

That was fun, dude!  Nice range up there.  Got the Garands into action, got the red dot on the SKS zeroed, and further demonstrated that I can't shoot any pistol with recoil.  :)
Old man really got a kick out of the .17 and the SU-16 too.  Thx for sharing!

makarov... how does the "tin can range" work?

Can you post some pics or send em to me?   I would like to suggest such a thing to our range.

I think we would get more converts to shooting if they had fun things to shoot at.  I grew up plinking at all sorts of stuff and it was fun.

Shooting at paper bore the crap outta me.

Yep, the tin can range is a lot funner then punching paper. On the Los Altos site there is a small video showing the tin can range. Basically it's a small berm, where you set up the jugs/cans, in front of a large berm. The range is 40 yrds in length. They also have a 100 yrd tin can range set up between the 50yrd and 100yrd rifle range.

Here is a pic of the range setup:

Russian,

The mount Funky and I use is made by Scout Scopes (http://scoutscopes.com/index.html). It replaces the rear sight and is easy to install. You can also remove the top part holding the scope and use it as a rear sight. I still have the original wood on my Yugo M59 with the mount. I like Funky's whiffle bat stock, but I'll stick with original wood so the "man" doesn't arrest me for illegal modification of an SKS. ;)

It's Fed legal as long as you have a US made magazine, op rod, and gas piston, like I do.  Cali legal as long that US made magazine is a fixed 10 rounder, not the removable 30 rounder that I photoshopped in there.  I'd NEVAR consider using a magazine that our great KSSR lawmakers have determined to be unsafe.

Russian, did you get the to range with your Yugo 24/47 yet? If so how did it go? I'll be taking mine out with the Enfield this weekend.

Although I only fired about 20 rounds through it, it had some problems. I have a hypothesis of what caused first problem, but not sure of second. First problem; hammer hits the round, but some rounds do not fire. If I try again with same round, it fires normally. This probably can be fixed with more detailed cleaning of the bolt since some casmoline is stuck to part which I cannot reach and it causes hammer speed loss during firing sequence. The second problem is that extractor sometimes misses round and instead of catching rim on inside, it stays outside making round impossible to remove without unloading completely. Regardless of those, I’m happy with my buy. :D

Yea, the cosmoline can cause the spring to slow down. Also, if you are using 50's Yugo 8mm ammo, you should look into getting a stronger firing pin spring from Wolff springs. The 50's Yugo ammo have hard, deep-set primers and take a good whack to set-off. I went with a Wolff 22lb 1898 Mauser spring (http://www.gunsprings.com/RifleShotgun/Mauser_RsNF.html#1898) . I can now shoot 50's Yugo reliably.

As for the extractor, the only issue I have is on ejection, I really have to pull the bolt back briskly to get the shell to fling-out. Otherwise it just lays in the chamber and I have to pull it out by hand. I'm sure you'll get your 24/47 working reliably.
