I think I have a neat-o idea. Let's put in the "SIMCITY"[/b] aspect in to MA. :) Well.. maybe "SIM FIELD", not Simcity. I thought of this(I'm sure there are people who brought up the idea first) as I thought to myself what can solve the problem of:
a)diverse plane sets
b)debate over the perk system
c)fun/furball factor enough to make 'quaky' guys happy,
d)strategical aspect enough to make strat players happy.
It goes like this. If a certain base is defended with out a single knick or scratch - in other words, totally safe - the base would automatically evolve over into time beginning from "tiny airfield" into "a large airbase". Strategical factors such as cities and refineries, (maybe some new industrial sites like steel mill, airplane R&D centers can be introduced) effect deeply(strictly and reallllly deeply, much much deeper than in affects a country than now) into the construction and expansion of fields.
The size of the field limits it's functions and plane sets. A "tiny" field would be equipped with only early war planes and fighters, as it grows into a bigger field, it would be equipped with bombers, and finally when a field reaches it's most evolved state, it'd be equipped with late war monsters like Tempests.
At the beginning of a new war, after a reset, all three countries only have "tiny" fields. Well, maybe few medium sized fields. Over some time, the battle would be primarily brawls between fields. As fields behind the lines evolve, the strategic need to bomb industrial sites would come in deeper, since if a certain country evolves a "MAX" field, they'd be able to put in better and better fighters into war.
But the good part is, only a safe field might evolve under good industrial conditions. This means fields quite far from the front lines would be evolving much faster and thus, even though we don't have a 'perk system', the better and more powerful fighters would have to travel longer to reach the frontlines. This would limit just every impatient quaker from grabbing a temp and hoarding down the drain :) Only people with enough patience would be able to grab onto these good fighters. We might even need to form 5~6 men sorties from behind the front, land and refuel middle of the way, and get to the battling front. So we don't have perks, and it's free from "MAX" fields, but it is naturally limited :) And since frontline bases would be harder to keep "safe", naturally the "MAX" fields would fall behind the lines.
And the need for people to use bombers would grow larger and larger. (Oh yes, Big buffs like B-17s and Lancasters would only be able to up from .. ermm... "mid" sized fields too). Distruptions of R&D centers or refineries would slow down or stop good fields from evolving.
So, naturally, the front lines would be Small fields, the middle will have Mid sized fields, and the most deepest fields would be Large. Thus:
Point a) is solved - planesets are now diverse, it even sort of simulates a "war time development in technology".
Point b) is solved - Tempest-like uber planes are free at "MAX" fields. But since they are quite a distance from the front lines, new waves/reinforcements in a furball will definately be slow, it'd limit the numbers of ubers entering a battle field. besides, if one doesn't have the patience, they'd not fly it. The numbers are naturally limited.
Point c) is solved - well, the frontlines are always frontlines. Low alt furballs raging. And since "mid" evolved fields are closer than "MAX" evolved fields, there will be decent numbers of mid-war planes entering into furball too.
Point d) is solved - If you don't keep up bombing things behind the frontlines, or don't up proper interceptors when enemies are putting up large buff formations, your country will be the last to get mid/late war planes. Dedicated bombers will be welcome. Their efforts directly helps the country as much as any fighter pilot in the force. Since just capturing a "tiny" field isn't all that much worthy, (as tiny fields are captured and frontlines are retreated near "mid" sized fields, the furballers upping from newly captured "tiny" fields would have to face more powerful planes defenders up.) Continuous need for bombing and intercepting will rise.
...
This would be implemented like in AH 2.8 or something, if it ever is developed, but I truly believe this system knocks out all four of major debates anout the MA.

interesting but seems like it would be tough to implement.

Being in the bucket would shure be a drag. Not only out numbered, surrounded and with the lights out.
You only get to fly Gloster Gladiators and your strat is all captured by the enemy so It cant even evolve to let you have a I16

Wow... cool idea.. probably impossible to implement tho..
-
have to agree with Pong on this one.
-
Very cool idea!

Great idea...if only it could be implemented...
Add Aircraft Factory with X planes/hour output when 100% operational.
Set up civil harbours.
Implement an output system to each Factory, like X tons/hour, X Ack equipment/hour, X grunts/hour, etc. when 100% operational. Damage would slow down/stop damaged factory output.
Add a road, railroad & merchant boat network system as delivery system to airfields, wiht X tons/hour when 100% operational.
Set each hangar as capable of holding X planes, and nr. Hangars times X planes per hangar be the maximum each airfield can launch at any given time. Destroyed planes can be replaced by means of transportation system. Planes arriving at any airfield can refuel/reammo without restriction, given enough resources.
Airfield resources consumption modelled by means of actual supplies to aircrafts / ack positions. Maximum storage connected to number of ammo/fuel depots. Resupply needed to replenish stock.
Let one main field per country which would be not damageable and 100% operational no matter what, place them in the corners.
Reset on one country when main city/cities (would be awesome to have more than one) destroyed. Main city close to main base (not destructable)
Deliverance of goods and supplies only by means of transportation system or goon, deliverance of aircrafts either by transportation system or direct fly to destination.
Sorry, I'm digressing, but when it comes to strategy, I can't help it.....

I like this idea very much.
How about a slightly simpler vesion that could be easier to fit into the current scheme:
A field may have several fighter and bomber hangars. If no hangars are up, no planes available. If one hangar is up, early planes available, if two hangars are up, more advanced planes are available and so on - up to four-six hangars.
So it is similar to the current fuel setup - hitting fueal tanks gradually decreases availability.
Once some hangars are destroyed/damaged, they are rebuilt one at a time staring with the least damaged.
So the front line fields will naturally have more damage and less advanced fighters available. At the same time tactical raids on the rear fields can knock out enemy's advanced capabilities for a while and strategic raid on enemmy's cities/factories would help make that while longer.

Kweassa,
A very good Idea.

Kwe,
Great Idea, and I think mike2d has another viable option. They both sound good, but would make it very unpleasant for the team getting gangbanged and has only 3 fields with 1 FH up.

You should have one undestructable fully functional big airfield, not accountable for reset purposes.
