Title: Fan spacer
Post by: ViZeen on September 02, 2006, 10:25:48 PM
I dont know if this is common or not but I came up with this idea the other day after I replaced a (80 mm) case fan.
I cut out the spokes and removed the fan and motor on the old fan and attached it to the new one as a spacer. That reduced to nosie level a good bit getting to fan blades away from the grill. Thought I would share it.

How has it effected cooling?

I didnt expect it to affect temp. but it has lowered it about 4 C. I guess the fan being away from the grill allows it to move more air than it could jammed up against the grill. If you have a nice open grill you prolly wont get any drop in temp as I did.
This grill has a lot of small holes about the size of this emoticon
  so it does restrict airflow. I never thought about a spacer improving airflow.
