i thought he was invulnerable to snake bites and such...:(

Killed by a stingray? Bad luck there. Must have had an allergic reaction and no epinephrine in the med kit. I thought he'd been bit/stung/whatever enough that they'd know better. Getting poked by a stingray doesn't usually kill you.
Then again, knowing him he was probably holding the stingray up near his face and may have taken a load of venom in the face or chest. That would probably do it...
To be honest I'm suprised he lived this long, but not many people would even try half the stuff he got away with.

Even though he played with death constantly, his spirit captured everyone. I was afraid to see this day, just last week I spoke with my wife about it.
Shame, damn shame and he will be missed.

yikes. my buddy and i were just talking about him after talking about the Grizzly Man the other day. What I read said the spine of the ray pierced his heart. The mechanics of that are dumbfounding. I've been stung before but never ever gave a thought to being stabbed by one.
RIP
