I'm not sure what your getting at funked. If you ask a bunch of F1 fans you will get a new list. I'm a NASCAR fan and here's some of my favorite's:

1. Mario Andretti (The guy is just great what can you say.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif))

2. Jackie Stewart

3. Richard Petty

4. Alain Prost

5. A. J. Foyt

6. Ayrton Senna

7. Cale Yarborough

8. Dan Gurney

9. Dale Earnhardt

10. John Force (I love to listen to him talk.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif))

Those are just some of my favorite guys to watch race. Not necessarily a best to worst list. Unfortunately a lot of them don't race any more. I'm starting to get out of date with the current crowed.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Cabby is the winner.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

I guess ESPN are the real tards for making up that lame list.

And the NASCAR fans had the good sense to not vote for David Pearson.  David Pearson?  LOL  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Fangio?

Very cool sounding answer  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif). The guy was a great driver indeed, but didn't his career last like 8 (phht!) years ?

He did dominate in that time, when his neck wasn't broken, but it was an eight year period for gods sake.

Didn't he throw up his hands and quit driving formula one because his car wasn't competitive that year? (1958)

Lets see, ironhead won his first winston cup in his 2nd year. He was competitive over a twenty year period. He carried the sport from one era to another. Hell, he finished #2 in the points last year, at the age of 49! Earnhardt is a legitamite contender if your talking about the best driver of all time. Why wouldn't he be? And come up with something other than he drives NASCAR, or he was a redneck, talked funny, went hunting, etc. If you don't think winston cup racing is one of the most (if not the most) competitive racing there is, your head's in the sand bud.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

In a typical winston cup race, the cars are close, meaning the drivers are actually racing each other, scratching, clawing for position. Not a half lap ahead of the #2 guy.

Just because formula one, CART, IRL, etc. etc. outperform winston cup cars, doesn't mean the drivers are automatically better drivers, or that the racing is any better. It just means their cars are faster, thats it.

Oh yah, BTW, Dale Earnhardt jr. and sr. teamed up and finished 2nd (or was it 3rd?) in the 24 hrs. of Daytona, just a couple weeks ago. Their first race ever in that kind of car.

Yep and just because F-16's and F-15's outperform Cessnas, it doesn't mean the pilots are any better.    (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

Fangio was a mechanic who worked his way into racing and drove competitively for 25 years.  He learned his craft racing stockers in his native Argentina, where he dominated in races that were often thousands of miles long on dirt roads.  Drivers had to do all of the work on the cars and not a few of them died.

He won his five world championships near the end of his career, when he was about the same age as Earnhardt.  He drove quite a few crap cars in F-1, and was competitive even in the worst of them.  These were tremendously powerful but flimsy cars, running on tracks that were far more challenging than anything seen in F-1/CART/NASCAR today.  Many of his peers met their death on the track, and it was an achievement just to finish a race in one piece.

Like Earnhardt, Fangio excelled in a regional form of motorsport.  But imagine if Earnhardt had gone on to dominate on the world stage as well.  That's the kind of man who was the greatest ever.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

And actually, wasn't Tazio Nuvolari just an Italian version of Dale Earnhardt?

I still remember reading stories about him when I was a kid (I mean...much younger than I am now...), beating on the side of his car to try and urge it on, in flames, across a finish line.

Then there was the time his car quit, and he actually got out and started pushing it towards the finish line.

Yup.  Kind of reminds me of Earnhardt's spirit.

Maybe comparing the greatest racers of all time is kind of like trying to figure out who was the greatest fighter ace of all time.

Richtofen?  Hartmann?  Galland?  Sakai?  Gabby?  Johnson?  Bong?

Each one flew with different factors influencing their situations, with different technologies, and differing dicta that guided their performance.

Maybe someday we'll have a racing statistical replay game like APBA baseball, and will be able to race Fangio, Senna, Earnhart, Schumacher, Stewart, Clark, and Mario against each other at Daytona!

Damn...can't find the Prozac...I thought I had it here on the desk...might be in the kitchen...oh, hell...

Mk

LOL Mk10.
Nuvolari was cool.  My favorite story was his 1930 Mille Miglia win.  (For anybody who is wondering, Mille Miglia was a 1000 mile race on open roads in Italy.  Fast and deadly.)

The final stage had a nighttime finish, and Nuvolari was in 2nd place behind his Alfa Romeo teammate Achille Varzi.  He was catching Varzi and could see his taillights ahead in the night.  He knew that if Varzi saw him, or if he passed Varzi too early, Varzi would increase his pace and would fight him to the finish line.  So Nuvolari turned off his headlights and carefully crept up behind Varzi, using the leader's headlights for a guide.  As they neared the finish, Nuvolari hit the gas, pulled around his surprised teammate, turned on his lights, and beat him to the line!
