Got these by email today. Pics of landings at the old Hong Kong airport. Rather hairy approaches...

The makers of Depends should use that in their commercials. :)

Whats runway length? Looks awful short for a 747
-
Holy crap!...Just read that it's 11,000 feet! sure doesnt look like it in the picture though!
-
The Chinese have smaller feet, that's probably why....
-
I believe that last 747 crosswind had to change out the #4 engine on the right.
-
:lol Stringer, do they have that in MSFS2004? Looks fun, if only you could hear the screams of the passengers:t
P.S. Is that the airport that you fly past apartment buildings and such? That one sounds wild too. Some of those islands as well:eek:

I only went through Kai Tak twice before they closed it. I was on the right-hand side of the aircraft, in a window seat, on the second occasion.
I swear, I was looking into apartment windows at guys playing cards, and could see who had the best hand.
The red checkerboard was there to remind pilots to "Turn before you hit this."

Flew into it on FS2004, it really is a loooooooong runway, goes fast though. That's what I was talking about with the islands Chairboy. Crazy low.

Here's a couple more... there were supposedly shot from balconies.

Isnt that the island they built for multi millions of dollars that is supposedto sink underwater in a few years?
-
^ No, the island is the one they built to replace Kai Tak, though I've not heard much about "the island is sinking" issues in HK. The one in Osaka definitely is sinking / settling though.
Don't know what's with Kai Tak now - I assume it's a dreamland for connected property developers.
-
When I first starting traveling to HK, Kai Tak was the airport.
That was alot of fun...it was even more fun traveling with someone who hadn't been to Kai Tak yet :)
The new airport is very nice, but the approach is very boring compared to Kai Tak!
Smash,
Those shots were most probably shot from balconies. You could look out your window on the airplane and see people's laundry hanging from the balconies......at eye level!
On another note....our offices were/still are in the Kodak Building on the island side at North Point. Our bathroom used to have an outstanding few of Kai Tak!.....it was awesome doing your business and watching 747's take off and land!

Cool video from that airport.

That strip have aresting cables:eek:

The most remarkable thing about the airport is that there were no serious jet plane accidents despite the hazardous looking approach. Although many 747's stayed there for couple of days to replace either of the outboard engines. At least one 747 was also scrapped after running over the runway and settling afloat at the end of the runway in the water. They had to cut off its vertical stabilizer because it was a high obstacle at the end of the runway.

Nuh uh...screw that man, I wouldn't fly into that knowingly.
