Title: Conroes vs the AMD 64s
Post by: Slash27 on September 15, 2006, 06:38:53 PM
I know the Conroe is the king of the hill. I want to know how they stack up against the AMDs. Like the  E6300,6400 to the AMD 4800,5000s. WIth the price drop on the AMDs, what the most bang for the buck? Im really looking at the E6600 2.4 ghz and from all I read its a sweet PCU. But between it and the mother board, it s a chunk of change.

i dont know about the conroes vs. amd, but i just got a pent. D940 3.2ghz, and it rocks.
decided on because of price, but got a mobo that is conroe capable for later upgrade.
i understand amd is going to come out with new processors late 06 and early 07, so maybe the conroe will come down then.

From what I've heard Conroes overclock like crazy on stock aircooling so it's not mandatory to spend a lot of change to get one.

I think http://www.anandtech.com keeps a processor comparison chart listed on their front page.

ASUS Mobo will auto overclock to a safe setting. I have a Conroe 6300(1.8GHZ). Since I knew nothing about overclocking I used the ASUS auto thingy. On basicly stock cooling(2 extra fans) it clocked it to 2.2 or 2.4, can't remember now. All that did was bump the temp up from 40ish to 45ish. After an earlier thread and the great SKuzzys' advice I decided not to bother overclocking. Everything works great as is anyways, I didn't really see a difference between stock speed and overclocked.

I can't really compare chips because I never had AMD but from just the transfer from pentium 4(3GHZ) to this is amazing.

The D940, just for the sake of comparison, dissipates 130W of power.

The E6300-E6700 dissipates 65W and the X6800 dissipates 75W of power.

Those are design specifications.  The actual power usage will vary slightly depending on what the processor is doing.

The Conroes are really impressive. If you are looking for a PC that is fast yet quiet and uses less power then they are the way to go. Price/performance is not _that big_ of an issue as AMD has lowered the price on their CPUs to better match the performance/price of the Conroes.. They use and spill alot more energy tho and that means bigger PSUs and harder working fans.

If you live in a hot place that can be a real problem, but if you live up here the AMDs can be a good heating system for a small room. ;)

Kinda funny actually. Not that long ago the P4s were the heaters and AMD were the most power efficient.
