I'm playing Red Orchestra, 29.95 download at Steam.
Germans vs. Russians, nice weapons, no crosshairs just the iron sights/scope, no silly jumping around, believable tanks...

Red Orchestra rocks.  Not arcadish at all- but!! give it a few hours of serious gameplay to become aclimated.  You won't be disappointed once you get the feel for it.  Funkynuts hates the non-zooming iron sights, but he is gay, so go figure.  It's a blast.

The BF Nam WWII mod is great, but the servers are pretty empty at times.

I tried COD, didn't like it. BF1942 was more fun IMO.

For some modern combat that strives for realism, Americas Army is still 100% free to DL & play... and BF2 is fun.

Do you know of any host sites for AA, that have a fairly quick download?

Also a big Red Orchestra fan. Really enjoy the realistic approach they've taken with it. No bunny-hoppin' crap here. Also the tank warfare is a blast.

I just re-activated my World War 2 Online account. They have done quite a bit to it. Really kinda cool.

Have to agree. Dont go into it looking for stunning graphics or a flight sim.

Dinnae if it's on PC or not... but a real sleeper in the WWII FPS genre is Sniper Elite.  Found it for the PS2 one day while Xmas shopping at Toys R Us.

I got a copy from a recruiter a long time ago, the DL servers are hit & miss as I recall reading... some good, some bad... but the game servers are always full, lots of maps.

Day of Defeat for Steam is also a good one.  Havn't tried red orchestra yet, but now I'll have to.  DOD is a little arcade ish, but it is objective oriented and there's some cool stuff, like going prone while running makes you dive.  Diving behind cover to get out of the way of a grenade is fun, rewarding, and neccessary.  Rambo will get shot, the ground hugger has a chance of survival.

Nothing like pressing yourself against the dirt with MG42 rounds glowing over the sandbags that are your only refuge!

Kar98 needs the bayonette again though.  That was really fun.

I play Red Orchestra, too. Been playing since it came out in October 2003 for UT2k3. In fact, I think I heard about it first on this forum (been lurking here a lot longer than I've been registered).

Anyway, the retail release, Ostfront, is incredible, and it's only getting better. A new patch is scheduled to come out this month, with even more updates scheduled well into 2007. It's the only game besides AH that's been able to keep my interest for more than a few months.

Hawk, RO has diving, too, and a really cool feature where you can rest your rifle on just about anything to steady your aim. All in all it's definitely worth a try, and at less than $30 I doubt you'll find a better bargain.

It's not WWII, but you should probably keep an eye on Operation Flashpoint 2: Armed Assault.

The thing I hate most about ww2ol is I feel so disconnected while playing.  No way to talk ingame. Best to use TS with a bud I guess.

My PC is doggy in there too. Plus it seems like a constant elipse is going on as its so dark. But its kinda fun at times.

I play the original Call of Duty for the PC, and although there alot of arcadish-childish-bull****ers, while he is jumping up and down with a thompson, I like to walk up and hit him in the head with '98 rifle. Its funny to watch him die from blunt-force-trauma (Yes, you really can do that)

Did you see how they added that blue tint to everything at night. I dont like it much. And you have to live like a mole closing all the shades so you can see when its dark.

Red Orchgestra is great as a realistic infantry sim.

The tanks give a great feeling of immersion until you actually shoot at something, then the gross limitations of the penetration and damage models become apparent. Still, pretty fun though in an arcade sort of way.

The practice bot AI is super weak. Not smart to the point of having enemies run by you without shooting at the easy levels but over compensated with super accuracy at the harder levels. A guy running with a SMG at 200 yards firing from the hip and scoring hits. There are ways to adjust the settings to make it more enjoyable while you learn the maps and weapons, but I don't have them handy at the moment. I believe I removed "adjust to skill level" and left it at a middle setting and it worked pretty well.

I googed for that, http://www.ostfront.com sells old WWII posters that are pretty neat.

This is the game, I assume, best to wait for September update or does it matter?

Yeah, sorry about that. The complete title is "Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45". Just a bit of a mouthful, so I only wrote Ostfront. The link you posted to the game is indeed the correct one.

The next update is adding a new weapon, some cosmetic changes and some minor bugfixes. It should be out any day now. It's not like Battlefield where you need the patch just to have a working game. The game is completely playable right now, so really there's no sense in waiting for the update, unless you just want to update the game all at once instead of having to install and update, and then update again a few days later.

Just be warned that it's a completely different experience than most other FPS's. Many people hated it for the first few hours they played and complained on the boards. Then once they got used to it they came back and posted that it's one of the best games they ever played. So, you might have to give it time before it grows on you.

Sorry again about the confusion with the name, but that site you found is pretty cool, so it wasn't a completely bad thing.
