Title: Old habits die hard:)
Post by: humble on September 18, 2006, 09:43:08 AM
I went ahead and filmed a couple of clips with the idea of beginning to build out a "training library" for the "new" {for me that is} Squad I'm flying with (A great bunch BTW). Both basically go back to my time as a trainer here.

The 1st is a P40B vs. Nikki fight filmed in the "old MA" in 8/06. Basically it's a basic angles primer showing reasonably solid angles technique (and a good angles merge) vs.s a pilot who's more plane dependant. There is a text write up along with some comments in the film.

Realistically this is a recreation of a typical "1st encounter" between a trainer and reasonably experienced pilot in the TA. After the "take your favorite plane" hop the real work begins. One comment here is the initial merge is very aggressive in placement and timing. You need to create a difficult but enticing shot window...I get "tickled" very often here but take damage less than 5% of the time. This is a learned skill and my biggest problem with the current TA setup. (BTW you'll see in the 2nd clip I get tickled on 1st reversal, he misses on the 2nd reversal and refuses the 3rd)

The 2nd clip was filmed on 9/17/06 in the early war arena. I rolled a 109F to take on a good pilot who was beating us up during a "squad-op". He's in a 38G with alt and E so its a good angles/E film vs a very good (IMO) stick.

This starts with my opening merge being refused (he flies correct E opener) and going thru my reverse to angles midgame, disengagement (mine) Reengagement, rolling scissors, disengagement (his) and so on....

Link has text and both clips (under snaphook)

humble I am headed to look at em now
I went back and watched some of my OLD film prior to coming back to the MA. I am gunna download these and take a look.

I am rusty as hell and have managed to get myself killed alot.. mostly because I know better than to engage when I did but pushed a bad situation.. or lost SA.. or just plain can't shoot right now.

Anytime you want a target let me know I most fly LST :D

hehe I'm permanantly rusty I think:)...

It beats being relagated to mediocrity:).

If I looked at it from your (my) perspective as an "old hand" I think it (both clips) points out two important elements. 1st the differance between plane performance and tactical performance. Clearly the nikki should dominate the P-40 (especially with alt & E). Given that rawwdog is constantly a "top 10%" pilot from a scoring aspect he brings some level of skill to the contest. However its skill evolved in the "new reality" vs the initiation you and I had. I dont think he was prepared for someone who knew what fight to fly to beat his plane. Now had I run into an old hand he's of denied the opener sat on my head and stomped me to death:). It is however a reminded that tactics count and you have an ace up your sleeve.

As for the second its a good reminder for the ebb and flow. Those great "white knuckel" duels we cut our teeth on have largely dissappeared. So scenarios where the advantage flip flops and fightsd had an opening middlegame and endgame have largely dissappeared. Hopefully they're a decent "State of mind" primer if nothing else.

BTW we fly knight (usually in the early war) but are in all three. A great bunch and I'm sure you can tag along as much as you like. If you decide a squad is the right thing I reccomend these guys highly...great bunch to fly with....

Humble,

I wished I had filmed today.. I had a run in that like normal I blew my advantage by diving into multiple bogies.  I ended up with a Yak-9 on my 6 and I was slow in my F4u-1d and figured here I go ..another lesson in don't be looking for every fight :lol and I drew him in with the drop flaps 2 notches and lower the gear (dive brakes) and use my roll to my advantage.. 2 scissors later I had a firing solution (which I missed terribly) but my opponant made a huge mistake and augered when he stalled trying to shake me.  I had already cleaned back up and firewalled the throttle to get after him.  I landed a kill w00h00.   Little steps :D  I am getting some bullets on target and hopefully will continue to get more.  I just gotta figure out my overtake speed a little better on the bounce and what I am going to do when he/she breaks as I come into guns.  It'll come back.

On a different note.  Since I can't banter with the other teams how do I do the multicountry salute?  I can't find it in the key mapping and I migrated all my previous keymaps from AH over to AH II.

I hope to see you up.  Early war sounds great and I still fly Knit too.

multi channel is on 200 now not 1. so adjust 1 of your channels to 200 instead of 1. No clue what the salute command is...I just use the keyboard to type it out.

I still die futilly all the time. sometimes its getting cute and running into a real good stick (greebo, bluekitty and Balor and similiar guysjust own my sorry @**). Other times its more boredom. I actually have a hop I broke down into 3 clips but isnt up yet. 1st is 5 minutes of me vs 6-8...but I have alt & E and work em for 2 good shots...both times I get parts but not kills (flying a 109F). 2nd clip is me playing cat and mouse with a 109 in his ack and deciding to go fight a spitty. I go all angles on the guy and its interesting in that i'm off the gas the whole fight. Actually ( I think) a good example of keeping your plane in "the sweet spot" vs a better turning plane. He just kept to much E for the fight and I finally force him out front and wing him. He augers trying to evade...now I've got a P-40 screaming on me with 5-6 others in tow. Break that into the 3rd which starts with a nice reverse and me chasing the P-40 all over while the cavalry (his) comes over the hill. I must spend 2 minutes trying to finish this guy while ignoring the others buzzing around. A friendly comes in to help and that kind of seals the deal...cant just leave him there. I overload and turn the wrong way and take a pilot wound.....

I'll make it a point to look for you if I'm on....
