I figured we needed an early-model P-47D for the SWPA, so here goes my first attempt...

from front left...

And beneath right.
Still have work to do- I want to weather the paint a bit more, add a bit more dirt to some spots and otherwise show the signs of heavy use. But the markings, panel lines and rivets, and top-level weathering and fading are the way I want them now.

I like it. No real gripes on my end. Once you put the finishing touches on it, it should pop...

The cowling ring is not uniform all the way around. The top flaps are longer than the bottom flaps. Just past halfway down the sides of the nose, the cowling flaps curve in a bit. The white paint should follow this curve. It's extending past the cowling flaps right now.
A minor point, but a visible one :)
P.S. The stars all seem a little abnormal. I'd suggest double-checking your source (if you don't have one find one). If they're right, then I'm wrong. If not, it doesn't hurt to double check :)

The profiles show the band to be of uniform size all the way around- the only photo of the plane I have is from the rear quarter, so its hard to tell which way it was. I elected to make it uniform.
The lack of blue border on the bar? Thats accurate, it shows up on all the 8th goup P-47s, P-40s and early P-38s.

Do you have a scan of this profile? I'd be interested in seeing it. I'm wondering if they made all the cowling flaps uniform in size (which is why the stripe was uniform).
From recollection, I think the color was only on the flaps themselves, not underneath them.

I dont have access to a scanner, Im working from the photo and profile in "Twelve to One".

Far be it from me not to add to the pile. Looks like Treize is on the right track.

Nose shot 2. Cowl ring looks uniform all the way around.

The one being modelled is actually a D-4, not our D-11. The cowl flaps don't taper the same on the early-model jugs. Makes more sense that the band is uniform if you look at it that way.
But your photos show that I have the "kill" markings (even though they were only probables...) in the wrong place. Thanks Dan. :aok

Ahhh... okay then I'd recommend you adjust the panel lines (when you get around to it) so that the cowl flaps match the D-4, so that they don't taper.
-
Hadnt even thought of that. Im too used to doing them for Pacific Fighters, where the cowl flaps actually move. But in here, theres no point in making the cowl flaps match where they should be on that model if they only exist as a couple of lines drawn on the fuselage. I'll modify that next time I'm working on that skin. :aok
