Looks like trouble...
Red Alert: Thailand - Military Movement in Bangkok
The Thai military moved tanks around government headquarters in Bangkok the evening of Sept. 19 as part of an apparent army coup. Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is in New York, and he will not be able to return until some sort of compromise has been made. Thaksin tried to make a statement on television regarding a state of emergency, but the programming was interrrupted to show pictures of Thai royalty while songs associated with former military coups played in the background.
The tanks moved in shortly after Thaksin issued a state of emergency and ordered army Commander in Chief Sondhi Boonyaratkalin to report to Deputy Prime Minister Pol. Gen. Chidchai Wannasathit. It is unclear whether this is an attempted coup, preventative military action or a countercoup.
Meanwhile, things are relatively calm in Bankgkok. No soldiers have been patrolling the streets, no curfew has been declared and the airport is open.

its been "breaking news" here for a few hours. Sad stuff.
I hope Leonardo De Caprio is safe on The Beach. Well not really. They can take him, but leave his girlfriend alone... she is hot.

BANGKOK, Thailand (Sept. 19) - Thailand's army commmander ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a military coup Tuesday night while the prime minister was in New York, circling his offices with tanks, declaring martial law and revoking the constitution.
An announcement on national television signed by army Commander-in-Chief Gen. Sondhi Boonyaratkalin ordered all troops to report to their duty stations.
As soldiers and armored vehicles moved through Bangkok, an announcement from the military earlier declared a provisional authority loyal to beloved King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
The announcement declared that a "Council of Administrative Reform" had seized power in Bangkok and nearby provinces without any resistance. It recognized the king as head of state.
"The armed forces commander and the national police commander have successfully taken over Bangkok and the surrounding area in order to maintain peace and order. There has been no struggle," the announcement said. "We ask for the cooperation of the public and ask your pardon for the inconvenience."

Bangkok, Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner.
Bangkok, just another stop in
The chess world circus -- masters drop in,
Play, checkmate, check out and then you
Move on to another venue.
Like Iceland -- or the Philippines -- or
Hastings -- or -- or this place!

I thought this might be about asian cadillacs

Sort of defines the '80s in a Eurotrash kind of way.
BTW, I think it's "but the queens we use would not excite you".

The coup is a very calm one. Just read a piece in a norwegian paper about it. One norwegian 54 year old that lives there just walked over to the soldiers outside the government building and talked with them. They smiled and posed for photos with him etc.. Not a violent coup at all.
