small things like rulers, circles area marks to plan, calculate distances, remember, or to show directions to team going for mission

I could be wrong but I think at least some of these things are available in the mission planner.

Ehem, usually the typical terrain square is 25 miles. That should give you an idea of how far you're traveling.
