Title: World Extreme Rock Crawling

Any rock crawler fans here? I've never followed the sport much but find it exciting. For some reason they are having the 2006 National Championships here in my podunk North Texas county this weekend.

This should be interesting. They are planning for 20 - 40,000 people to show up for the 2 day event. The town has 1,000 residents, 3 cops and 1 stoplight. All in all, it should be a hoot.

Never saw that before, but it would be a good device/skill to have in Northern Virginia traffic.

Crawling is pretty cool.  I've never done it before but have watched it several times.  It requires alot of skill and precision, not to mention money.

Have ridden along in a Jeep based crawler.  Pretty cool.  We ended up towing out the rest of the group.  :)

Usually the lifts alone for the 6" travel ride suspension start out at  1K.  and that's only the suspension.

6" won't cut it for rock crawling. You go for shocks with about 16" of travel and that's about 2/3 of your suspension travel on one side. Shocks alone will cost you 2k

Nope, it's quite technical, both in the construction of the vehicle and the details of driving.

Went rock climbing few weeks ago with my dad's co worker, mid 90's Jeep Cherokees, pretty much totally custom regarding springs and shocks, he put a small block Ford engine into it, damn thing roared like no other, especially since it had no exhaust.  He eventually got the nerve to take it up one of those dirt bike hills, the ones to see how high you can get, amazingly he made it.  then he tried to drive it up a near vertical slope but the carb cut out.  All in all, it's a great ride, really gets the adrenaline pumping.  It was raised about 2.5-3 feet, up to my waist and i'm 6 foot 2.
