Title: Flyboys - Online = DOA?
Post by: AKFokerFoder+ on September 22, 2006, 01:53:20 PM
There is a new on-line flight sim called Flyboys.

I think it is just an attempt to leverage the movie that is coming out tomorrow by the same name.

Being an avid WW1 buff, I was very excited until I started to run the game.  It looks to me like they just  put a new wrapper on Dawn of Aces :(

Flyboys Game site (http://www.flyboysgame.com/)

And I always thought DOA sucked so bad, (compared to Red Baron 3D). Arcade flight model, arcade gunnery, cheesy graphics.  They have upped the graphics a bunch.

I don't think I will leave World of Warcraft for Flyboys.

I am waiting for TOD to see if I might come back to AH. By then I should have bought a new computer, and I may be able to run AH without stutters and rubber bullets.  My 3200+ Athlon, 1.5 GB RAM, and ATI 700 card with 256MB of RAM just seemed to have some glitch in it that made AH gameplay impractical. I have film of me darn near emptying a full load of ammo from a 109 into a B17 at ranges of 120 to 30 yars.  After the 3rd pass he finally started smoking. I emtied the 30mm guns of the ME163 into an Avro, at least a dozen pings on my FE. He finally started to smoke and then went down about 5 minutes later.  It was nightly and often, anyway this is not a rant, it was  probably just a problem between the software and my particular hardware.  Anway I gave up after 5 months of trying everything in the hardware books.  When I finally spring for a new machine (mine runs WOW smooth as glass), I will get an account and take a Kite up.

Anyone have any experience with the Flyboys Game?

Same clowns that write that other sim, warbirds.  They spammed me two days ago with the 'play the movie!!one!eleven!' offer.

I expect it sucks just as much as WB.

Dude that PC should be more than enough to play AH.  I suspect you've got driver and software problems.

Your computer issues are strange.  I fly AH2 on a computer that's half that speed:  AMD 2200, 512 mb, GF4 128mb.

As much as I'd like to play a WWI game that gives that old Red Baron feel, I'm automatically skeptical of any video game based on a movie.

let me know if you get the throttle to work in the demo - X45 here and can't get it to work.
the graphics remind me of ms combat sim, it is very relaxed almost to the point you are flying balloons

I would venture to guess that it is the Warbirds engine with some WWI planes and terrain.

It is an old issue, I spent 5 very frustrating months doing every hardware check I or others could find.  Lots of driver changes, going forward in driver vesions and back ward. I bought better power supplies, tried different ethernet card, bought a spiffy new Audio card, swapped out my ATI card with a better NIVIDIA.  All kinds of BIOS changes, turning off any program in the background but bare essentials, several reloads of Windows, different joysticks.  I exchanged emails with Skuzzy and tried all that was suggested.

I came to the conclusion that it just must be a incompatability issue between my hardware and and Aces High.  The problem started around version 2.2 I think.

Everything else seems to run fine on my machine.
