According to this article:
This lens has to be up for one of the sexiest in all of photography (and I mean versions made by all the major companies). Big and heavy and as Phillip Greenspun might say, " A good remedy for the penile deficient." I don’t think anyone can call oneself a serious photographer without this particular class of lens. For this last point, it is not about size, weight or vicarious Lilliputian penile substitution. It is about image quality. In this one rather large-ist package we have the ability to replace four lenses (80mm, 105mm, 135mm, 180mm/200mm) for a price far lower then what it would cost to have all four lenses (even if comparing the new AF-S version)

I bought this lens today. Between the BMW and this lens, I'm officially 12" long now. :D
Seriously, I really needed a f/2.8 zoom for these cloudy, rainy days coming up during football season.

Sorry, but I used to have a 500 mm Vivitar f5.6 for surf photography that was about 20 inches long with an uncircumsized lens hood. Finally got rid of it -- too much recoil.

That D200 is on my long term horizon but I'm still applying the defibulator paddles to the wife for the cost of this lens (Wait til she sees the price of the D200 body! Guess I could show her the D2Xs first, then the D200 price should make the shock impact less ;) ).
I've been told that the D70s performs well with the AF-D, but the D70 was subpar for quickeness. Guess I'll be finding out sometime next week!
-
D80 might be a reasonable substitute for D200 if you need to upgrade from the D70... Half the cost of the D200.

Is that the kind they use to make porn mags???

Yeah, that's what it looks like DURING the session. Before and after it fits into your pocket.

I was stupid enough to try the Canon 400D at my photo store today. Didnt take any pics with it there but I fell in love with it . I still havent done much with my Nikon but the 400D just fit my hands perfectly. I knew were everything was right away. If i can sell the D50 to any of my friends ill run down to the store to get it.
Anyone here drooling over that one?
-
D80 is the only one that's caught my eye recently. Then again, I haven't tried out the canons recently.
Of course, I really have no reason to toss out my D50 and lenses to switch to any other camera brand, no matter how good it is. The D50 is "good enough" for now.
-
The D80 sertainly looks interesting but it is in another price range. The 400D is the new entry-level camera i belive when the 350D goes out of production. I havent gone beyond the kit lens on my D50 so apart from the filter i bought yesterday I would not loose the use of anything like that.

Camera threads are like gun threads, often evolving into what feels best to shoot and whether it is something you really will carry a lot, have it when you need it, and actually use it the most.
Bigger cameras and lenses and bigger guns and ammo are fulfilling but expensive. Smaller cameras and .22s probably produce 90% of the fun at 10% of the cost.
Fun is hard to quantify, but I've shot more photos with my Canon Digital Elph than every other camera I've ever had, and I've had quite a few.
-
Very true Halo.. I have in the past and will in the future take alot more pictures with my Canon compact camera than with the D50. When the cameras on phones gets even better im sure they will take even more of the market.

I've always thought pocket cameras were the best solution for 90% of what you need to do with a camera, unless you have a specific hobby like taking pictures of birds or sporting events. In that case, having the right lens is much more important than the camera it's hooked to. The difference between my 300D and my 20D is not that great. The difference between my 75-300 el cheapo lens and my 75-400-L-IS is significant. I've even been eyeballing the 600-L-IS for some applications such as shooting pictures from a blind and the price is becoming less of a concern.
The Digital SLRs are more bulky, require large camera bags and are generally less versatile than most hand helds on the market today. But there's not a pocket camer on the market that will give you a decent photo of a bird from more than 10 feet away.

I shoot about 1200 pictures on football day each week-end, and about 400 soccer pics. Having the right equipment to get the optimum shots means more business for me!
What I've shot in two games of football paid for the lens purchase I made yesterday. :aok

Exactly. I see parents shooting pictures with their kit lens and D50's from the fenceline on game days (football) and they are the ones buying my pictures. ;) The f/4-5.6 300mm has got to be put away once the weather turns nasty, thus my purchase of the f/2.8.
Personally I think lens quality is much more important than the camera body to a point.
Montages are our biggest sellers, we have various sizes get between $65 (8x10) to $100 (20X24) for these:

Good on ya, guys, there's nothing like the right equipment for the job at hand. Brings back >fond< memories of when I worked my way through college as a reporter-photographer.
First camera I used was (dating myself rather thoroughly) a 4x5 Speed Graphic with two 4x5 negs in one holder you'd flip for the second shot, pulling out and returning the slide covers over the negative for each shot.
By the time I graduated there was lots of envy of Life magazine photographers with their fancy 35mm cameras and motor drives. Such a waste of film, that seemed to us boondock low budget types. We prided ourselves on being the one-shot snipers, not profligate assault weapon photographers spraying everything in sight with a (gasp) motor drive!
Like, ANYONE could get a good shot selecting the best frame from a long movie clip!
Just before I left the newspaper, I was training my replacement. We drove 50 miles to a Friday night football game. He started muttering and pacing, so I asked him what was wrong.
I'll never forget his answer. "I forgot my camera," he said.
DUH. No problem, I said, we'll just alternate using my camera. On one of his shots, he got one of the best pics of the entire season, a fullback charging straight at the camera with hands all over him.
Sometimes we all need our guardian angel.

btw, its a proven fact that cameras lead to photography. In countries that have cameras legalised there is 100% more photography going on than in others.
and don't tell me that my 'nanny state' is keeping me visually restricted, yeah yeah, i know, what if someone breaks into my house and i want to take a picture of them....whatever...
cameras dont take pictures, people take pictures.

Nilsen,
Check out Cameta Camera. I got my kit brand new with warranty, everything you'd expect from a real brick/mortar store, but for about 20% discount overall vs. ususal retail price.
It's an ebay store but if you don't like the packages they put together for sale on ebay, you just call their 1-800 number and put something together on the phone. That's what I did... I got a D50 plus 2 lenses plus some random kit stuff, then called to add a refurbished flash and some filters for another $150 or so. Seemed to be nice people.
http://stores.ebay.com/Cameta-Camera
Digital Rebel XTi with 18-55 lens and some small kit stuff, $899. Body alone, $799. Older Rebel XT body alone is $684, but you get a better bargain buying with lense and other stuff.
Nikon D80 body only, $979. Not really a different league IMHO, but yea it's a few hundred more than the XT or XTI.
A different league is the D200 which is $1014 body only, or the D2X which is just over $4400 for the body alone :)

thx for the tip eagl but I buy my photo stuff off-line at a real shop. Costs abit more, but the service and help I get from them is worth it. :)
They are part of a larger chain of stores so their prices are rather good for a real store.

My new toy arrived today! Got to shoot some shots at football practice this afternoon for my own "practice" getting used to 6 lbs (with camera body) resting on my monopod. Here are some pics (taken with my little canon S40  )
