Title: 3.4ghz P4 that aint ?
Post by: Wolf14 on September 22, 2006, 10:06:11 PM: Hey guys I just upgraded my cpu from a 2.5ghz Northwood to a 3.4ghz Northwood. Ran into a problem I think. When I boot my machine up I get told on one of my splash screens that I am running an Intel P4 2.26ghz processor. Once booted I can look at my general system profile and it tells me I have a 3.4ghz processor, but none of the speeds match.

Anybody have any ideas as to why I'm not running correctly?

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-SINXP1394 that will handle 3.0ghz or higher processors. Ram is 3200 Corsair XMS.

I also reset my cmos by pulling the battery.

the multipiler does not seem right, but I'm not real good at this. FSB 200 x 17 =3400

id probely try 166 x 17 =2822 1st and beshure its stable and not over heating ect .. then push it on up .

Post by: Wardog on September 23, 2006, 01:10:20 AM: Agree with the rest, up your FBS to 200mhz, it would seem the CPU auto detect is not working or is not supported. Try flashing the Bios with the latest version. But for now, upping your FSB to 200 should solve the problem.

Post by: Wolf14 on September 23, 2006, 03:22:57 AM: I think I am having a limitation on my motherboard. Everything that came with this mother board said it was for a 3.04 processor and up. I went to their web page and look for a bios update. I have their most current bios, but their online specs lists this motherboard not having anything over 2.6ghz and thats about as much as I can overclock the processor before it shuts down and restarts the system.

I guess I'll email them and if nothing comes of it, I may be looking for another motherboard.

Shows FSB selectable from 100 to 355 mhz.

Your memory might be only rated for 166 and that might explain the probs. Maybe setting memory speed down and cpu FSB up might help. But from the above article, there should be no reason why that mobo won't work right with that cpu.

You could try a total bios reset with the bios reset jumper, and hope it autodetects everything...

Post by: Wardog on September 23, 2006, 01:01:15 PM: Eagl is right. I looked at the specs for the board as well. The bios does allow for Memory FSB to be manually set. You really should have no problem getting the CPU up to 3.4. You need to to manually set memory FSB.

Post by: Wolf14 on September 23, 2006, 06:54:38 PM: Well I cleared the bios and reset it. Still get same thing. I did kinda overlook something that may be the most obvious. My motherboard is only rated at 533FBS. The CPU I have is rated for 800FBS. Could that be why I cant bump my speed up?

Post by: FLS on September 23, 2006, 07:43:41 PM: The problem is that you are running your 800 FSB CPU at 533. This is probably because you don't have memory than can run at 800 FSB. You can replace your memory or if your MB allows it set the memory to run at PC3200 with the FSB at 800.

So i would like to know what kind of memory you are running. PC3200 will run on this board at 200FBS x2=400FBS

Memory should not be a problem as you can manually set the speed in the Bios for it.

By SPD or set manually: 266, 540, 400, 242, 360, 450, 333 and more.

Thats the same list I was looking at myself and it says N/A and the legend at the top says N/A= not support. So if that is the case their website says one thing and the box/ paperwork it with says another.

Post by: FLS on September 23, 2006, 11:31:08 PM: I don't see where that MB will support an 800 FSB. I would have edited my previous post if I could. The memory isn't the problem. If you get an 800 FSB MB then you will need to run the memory slower. The best thing would be to get a new MB and memory.

Post by: MrRiplEy[H] on September 23, 2006, 11:41:33 PM: The GA-SINXP is a total piece of crap because they advertise it supports HT processors. This gives a false belief that you can actually run new cpu:s with it which is not the case.

It does _not_ have support for 800Mhz FSB. So the only HT processor you can get it to run is the 'freak of the nature' 3.0 Northwood with 533FSB+HT.

I made the same mistake in buying the GA-SINXP1394-800 after reading it was a benchmark winner and the text mentioned it supported HT (and it had misleading 800 in the model number giving the illusion it actually supports that fsb) and then couldn't even get it to boot with a 800FSB HT cpu. Last Gigabyte MB I'm gonna buy - ever.
