Gents,
Why is that so many of you have to inuslt and belittle other players? Does it make you feel more like a man to make other players feel bad? Is it because you are a ten year computer pilot and your skills are so honed that you are allowed to insult new people? Do you feel like a "man" after you insult a new guy? Maybe that new guy loves WWII planes like we all do and has found this fun game to play. He isn't going to be good at the game, afterall he is brand new. He gets shot down repeated times but has the moxie to keep trying his best to get better. All the while he has to listen to grown men belittle him because his skills are lacking. You don't see the female fans of this games talking smack do you? Schatzi would never do that. Same goes for the rest of the ladies.
I bet that if I were to meet anyone of these top notch computer pilots on the street and we didn't know the other played this game we would have a normal descent conversation. Am I correct in that assumption? You would think so. Most people are polite to one another either over the phone or when meeting in person. Now once we each found out the other plays the game would you say things like the Bish are a bunch of unskilled pilots to me in person? Maybe.
I play this game because I have the passion for WWII era planes. My grandfather taught me much about the war while Rommel was chasing him all over North Africa. He told me many stories of seeing dogfights in the African skies. That really fueled my ambitions as a young kid.
We play this game for various reasons. Each and everyone of you has your own reason. We are adults, lets start acting like it.
All of us know who the guys are who talk smack and belittle other players. We see it everyday on 200 channel. We can as a whole all point fingers at the guys who do this here on the BBS and on the 200 channel.
Challange yourself to hold the insults and childish banter. We as a community don't need it.

some people enjoy it gunner, those that truly enjoy others shortcomings and make fun of them will only break down and realise what they are, one day.
the rest of us are either playing at 'chit talkin' for fun, or geuinely pissed off about something.
i think its importnant to recognise the difference between playfull banter, genuine anger, and a bully.
thankfully this community has far more of the first two, the trick is not to let the bully get you mad, cos thats how he wins and takes pleasure.

<----likes to sucker people into duels.:D

EDITED: Whoops I misread the post
Never mind

There are those people that just HAVE to put others down to boost themselves up. They've probably been that way for along time and don't know any other way to interact.
"It's not enough for me to win, others must lose."
-
I console myself when around the truly unpleasant:
"I cant stand being around them, but at least I get to leave....they have to live with themselves ALL THE TIME!"
It reminds me that there is some justice in the world after all.
-
I console myself with the fact that at certains times there's someone sitting all red-feaced and huffy, beating the crap outta his keyboard as he types hurling insults because some one got the best of him. I'm constantly reminded by that video of the german kid cracking under the pressure of a computer game...
That's my Pleasure. :D

I believe that what we have are a bunch of people who are speaking (virtually) in a manner that they never would have the guts to in real life.
The internet provides a certain amount of anonymity, and this provides some people the first chance that they have ever had to (virtually) stick their chest out and talk like a bad ass.
Just keep this in mind when you deal with them in AH. Remember, you have to adjust for “Internet reality”… Chances are that you are not really talking to a 21 year old sexy bi-curious coed, or Chuck Norris.
-
The good natured trash talking amuses me. being still somewhat of a noob I don't really partake in it too much. I have recieved pm's from disgruntled vets when I shot them down saying that my plane is for dweebs(which it is, and I am) and learn some real skills(which I'm trying to do). I take it with a grain of salt and usually give em a
. I've run into some tough typers(on my own side as well) that irritate me. I just let it go for the most part. The good people far outweigh the bad on all sides. I play this game because my grandfathers faught in ww2 and I have heard stories since I was a kid. One of my grandfathers worked at locheed and always had books, misc manuels, and models of planes in his home office. He worked on the starfighter and sr-71. He was an avid fan of aviation in general and it rubbed off on me. I wish everyone here could just be civil and treat others with respect, but sadly this will never happen(in a game or in the real world).

Can I get a kumbaya?
Next time just come out and say you're talking about lazs, the backhanded stuff is kinda weak.
-
I wasn't. Do you have a guilty conscience? ;)

200 is the male bonding channel, turn it off and the game gets better...

gunner,
I agree with you but, as you can see from above, some people just have to shoot their mouths (or in this case fingers), off. Immaturity, mom held them too much, or too little, breast fed, bottle fed, you name the cause.
-
jaxxo's mom is so fat she has to have 2 passports. 1 for left *** cheek in china other for right cheek in japan.

I do it for a feeble attempt at a funny. Most people do it to get a rise out of others and perhaps for posts like this asking for people to come together and hold hands. Truly, I take nothing personal on here, it's the damn internet, and don't be afraid to laugh.
Take these current BK/BoP threads for example, there has got to be comedic gold in each of them.
-
some people ARE funny... I love a well directed skewer especially when it's aimed at me. Others are not so much :)
-
I'm not a spineless dweeb Gents. The insults are just getting old and lame. Maybe I'm just getting old and lame?
For sure alot of the posts and 200 chatter is funny. But, alot is just aimed at some poor NOOB who just happened to get lucky and shoot a vet down.
I remember I shot down ManeTMP once and he had a meltdown. I shotdown one of the green mountain boys one time and he said that it would never happen again. I just laughed and went on my way. So what if my fighter rank is ALWAYS is the 300 to 400 range. I still have fun playing.

my squad is always insulting me, one of them even stole my avatar and renamed it "Furboll".
i think it is because they are jealous that i am younger, better looking, british and more intellijunt.
:(
-
Just ignore em.
What gets me is when you see certain people talking trash when they really arent all that good themselves.
They see you as a name. Easy to attack, and no fear of real retaliation. They crave attention. Famous or Infamous its all good to them.

Goaly, you hit the nail on the head...I think a good portion of the community has turned into complete jerks, and exploit the vail of anominity (sp) an internet offer's, because none would have the courage to speak like this in person...
Man...I would love an aces high Rugby tournament in real life...

One thing shared in common with all members of the squad is what is the best that this silly game has to offer.
It is not predicated on how "good" you are in the enjoyment of that one thing. I'm living proof of that ;)
The other thing we all share is the concept that this is just a game. I'm not recreating what my Dad did in the big W_W_2. I'm not paying homage to those that gave their lives in the skys over Europe and the South Pacific. I'm not the commander of a flight wing charged with saving the world from the war that never ends..
I'm flyin a cartoon airplane, shooting at guys in their own cartoon.
We all hang on the boards. I haven't flown alot over the past year but besides a comment from time to time most of us "listen" to 200.
That's a blast in itself. It's amazing how people get soooo wound up about cartoon planes. Alot of talk. I can name off many pilots that when I meet regardless of my altitude..I'm going to die. Don't hear the beating of the chest from them on 200.
That being a givin the boards are constant area of enjoyment. It's a game, once that is realized the boards are recess.
Playing on the boards in some ways is as much fun as flying cartoon planes. What has been become availiable by this company to us (the players) in the form of testing ones skills in a cartoon airplane vs. another live opponent in his, is mind boggling to someone of my age.
When someone has the opportunity to experience that, but instead spends all his time killing cartoon buildings and hangers....avoids confrontation unless they hold all the cards and makes it a point to kill the CV when there is a great fight happening between those experiencing the best the game has to offer ??
LOL !!
THAT'S why I'm glad there's recess. Lazs just happens to be blunt..he's correct in his accessment.
..seeing the veins sticking out of guys necks when replying is just a bonus.
He wasn't giving the Public Relations Officer rank. He earned it.
..come to think of it, he's the only one of us that has rank..or is rank..jeez, now I'm confused.
Thanks for your time. If you don't see the humor in the board wars I suggest stepping back and just looking at it for what it really is.
If a smile doesn't break out, you haven't stepped far enough back ;)

Have you ever--even once--posted on this BBS without plugging your view of how the game should be played? And what, exactly, does this have to do with the focus of the thread, which appears to be about politeness and stopping the insults?
-
No shubie I don't think I have.
Well I did, but that was a story about saurkraut and how it effects my digestion if I remember correctly.
Thanks for your interest.
-
Shubie, what does your post have to do with the focus of this thread?
Even less than poop's!
And no, we never post without plugging our idea of fun. It's a squad rule.
That being said, furballing is the only worthwhile thing in AH, aside from laughing at people who insult others.
-
Yea !!!
And we out rank you anyway. We're all 3 star Generals !!
I have a conference with the General staff in thirty minutes. Gotta run..
step a little further back from the keyboard shube's..

Good point SEstud. When Pyro decided that we were in a slum environment i wonder what all elements he was including.
I see it typed here in the BBS every day that the Arenas have become a kinder gentler place. going all round, gf's passed about to and fro like there was a fire sale on kindness.
All the players that are for the change are responsible for such comments and have clued us in so we are aware the change is good.
Hers the zinger...those same players are the biggest offenders of said behaviors. Kinda makes ya warm and fuzzy all over doesn't it? ;)
Seriously though i find your challenge very appropriate during this time of change and i am certain it would be good for the game, HTC and the players that bring it all together.
B@tfinkV "think its important to recognize the difference between playfull banter, genuine anger, and a bully."
The problem is that its very hard to decern across the text where the difference lies. So in the interest of peace you'd think the dumb tulips would just send a and forget it. But seeing it is ALL ego driven...I doubt they will ever have the discipline to restrain from such rubbish.

Much depends on what the individual considers insulting. Some are more weathered souls and can take 200 with a grain of salt. Others seem to be very insulted by being called a dweeb. (Dweeb= any adult that flies cartoon planes on an internet flight sim game. hee hee) I was basically indoctrinated with insults in this game when my first ingame name was a number. It never ceased as long as I flew under that number many couldn't resist an insult about it. What's funny is many that post on these boards against insulting people regularly insulted my handle back then.
Without using any names I will give you a history of insults that I have experienced:
*I am new and log onto AH1 with #'s as a name.
*For first few months I get insulted everyday by green guys for getting in the way or flying in front of them or any number of other newb mistakes I was making at the time. (#'s dweeb) (newb) even (dork) By red guys (Skilless, newb, #'s dweeb, cannon fodder)
*from 6 months til one year I start getting a few kills and regularly insulted on 200, mostly "#'s dweeb", or any other related insults about my handle or how lucky I was to kill them, or how I should "learn to fly"and "get a name".
* off and on through name changes and such the insults generally have been there and are a part of any social community. If one gets completely out of hand with them, usually they are caught and reprimanded by a moderator and/or "Teh Skuzz"!
So, if you think someone is insulting you, just hit (alt-s) or (alt-r) and send it to skuzzy. If it warrants a reprimand, granted Skuzzy will be fair!
-
i played this game for months before using channel 200, it added a whole new dimension to the game for me. i try to get along but some friendly trash talk is fun at times.
my favorite thing is waiting for some one to make a comment about me or my flying. then i am relentless in settling it in the air & rubbing it in on 200 lol.
IF U CANT STAND THE HEAT STAY OUT OF THE FIRE.... in other words if u dont like trash talk stay off the channel :)

200-300? :O Mine is generally 2 or 3 THOUSAND! Man, I feel bad now!
I have to admit, I find it halarious (Apologies for attrocious spelling) when my squad (one member in particular, not mentioning any names, but if he reads this he will know) just goes absolutly crazy on vox, and slags off the enemy calling them dorks! :rofl In all fairness, totally justified, Spit V verses FW 190 and they RUN! If anybody annoys me though, I just laugh it off, or try and keep my cool. If he REALLY annoys me to the point i want to blow up at him, I simply up again, determined to watch his little plane float to earth wingless!

The sad thing, SEgunner, is that it all boils down to sportsmanship in the end. Alot of the older crowd like to think that we would be as noble as the WWI aces of old.
However, NONE of the people playing this game are of that generation.
Many come from the generation of athletes talking trash or making boasts on national T.V. Of Highly televised "Proffesional" Wrestling, where the match is two parts-the interview before they step in the ring, and the actual bout.
I myself, would like to think that the aformentioned would not have an impact on the kind of people that play AH...but It's where many get their examples of what sportmanship is. After all, AH is about competition. You up whatever plane, with the intention of shooting down the guy in the red icon. There can only be one of two outcomes to the fight. Either you hit the ground, or he does.
To this end, HTC has (intentionally or no) designed the game around this competition. This is why we have kill messages...system messages for the #'s of kills we land...That is why there is also a strat game, with a message that says "The Bishops/Rooks/Knights have won the war". The awarding of perk points, which are the spoils of the victor.
Now, If you were/currently are involved in competitive sports(I played Full-contact football in a junior league when I was in Gr. 6-8, Then played for my Highschool team from Freshman to Senior), chances are that you have had enough discipline and talks from your coach, to understand what good sportsmanship means. However, I know that not everyone in the game has had this...And it reflects on ch. 200. I just hope that the AH training corps is able to adress this issue a little, But I know that It's hard to screen a Trash talker out in the TA when all they are doing is asking questions about "How do I take off?"
In my opinion, We'll probably be seeing more bad sportsmanship. Why? Society in RL encourages it less and less...It's even gotten bad in institutions such as NASCAR, the NFL, the NBA...The final score for the game gets put in a stat column, But the after-game fistfight makes the front page. We can do what we can on ch.200, But I've seen the guy stepping in to stop a text fight, usually getting embroiled in it themselves. And, no matter how many times you mute them, they will always pop up again.
-
We see it everyday on 200 channel.
I NEVER tune in to channel 200 ever . I come play to have fun not to be taunted or to listen to others do it . Best thing HT did was get ride of the white channel one I guess it was :)
Turn it off SEgunner and any of you new guys reading this , never turn it on , you might have more fun that way . I do :)
-
I'lll take a little (not prolonged) trash talk over the "you HOed me-you rammed me" whines. It's a sad fact of modern life that some egos can only by stroked in a game, but it's usually harmless.

This may be true in a few cases but I think it boils down to the fact that older players were taught protocol, manners, and common courtesy by our parents...values that are not emphasized as much in our "modern" world. This opinion was formed from my 17 years as a School Bus Driver....your's may differ.

But while i dont have much other online gaming to compare, i thing in AH the number of "good sports" is still pretty high.

Channel 200 would be better if it displayed canned text messages relevant to the game and left the other verbal diarrhea to the AOL chat room enviroments...

It really is, as is the overall maturity level of those who play. Take a stroll around World of Warcraft for a week, and you'll get all the "zomg u r nubsauce -_-" you can possibly handle. Aces High is positively tame in comparison.

We're ALL winners!
Atleast thats what they are being taught today. Perhaps the kill message should say:
You allowed FiLtH to shoot you down
and I'd see:
3888393 allowed you to kill him #1
Competition is great. As long as people know how to win AND lose with grace.
People who know me playing horseshoes and the like, Im a much better loser than I am a winner :) (especially when drinkin)
Trash talk is fun...it builds rivalries...as long as both parties enjoy it.
Once someone just gets plain mean...then its not fun.
