Because buckshot in a 12 pounder cannon isn't ****ing sporting.  No challenge to it.

Indeed, it would be far more sporting if the deer could fire back.  Say, oh a 155mm field gun.

if they could peg the deer from that distance with solid shot, then it's sporting.
