Title: Canon Powershot A630
Post by: Golfer on September 24, 2006, 04:24:13 PM
Any info or experiences?  8MP w/ a 4x zoom sounds pretty good to me.

I have the A510 and it takes some damned good pictures even if it only has 3.2 MP and 4x zoom.

The one you are looking at should be even better by a good margin..

They aren't boat-proof either.  I broke mine fishing offshore from the OBX (Teaches Lair, Hatteras) in 12' seas.

I'm tired of not having a camera so I was looking for a "cheap" camera that will do the job.  Sure am glad it's a good one because it was already ordered from Amazon after I picked it out at Best Buy.  There were some other ones that I just didn't want to let myself believe that were good cameras.  They were rectangular and didn't look the part of a camera.  One was the Elph somethin' or another by Canon which there's a thread about on the board now.

Just me but I couldn't bring myself to buy one so I went with this more traditional 'look' and what I hope will be a better performer with the 8MP and 4X zoom.  Yep I judged the book by the cover :)

Looking forward to taking photos again.

This is the old camera in action:

I'm not sure it is true for this particular model, but i know Canon makes an underwater housing for some of their P&Ss for a reasonable price (about $400 iirc).  Much better than the throw away jobs or the D50 + $5k housing IMO.  Alternativley a Nikonos V can be had pretty cheap these days

I made another thread BlueJ.  I'm pleased with it.  I haven't had it but for a couple days but it's easy to use and very capable.

I bought 2 1GB Sandisk memory cards for $17.99 each off of Amazon.com.  Hope to have lots of fun with it!

One thing to remember when shopping for digital cameras is that the amount of megapixels tells _nothing_ about the picture quality. It's all marketing jargon.

Just as in any camera the optics have a decisive effect to the result. I.e. don't buy a digital camera with 100 megapixels and a lense large as a button expecting you'll get fine pictures.

if the focal plane is large & the pixels are too, you could get some real beauties from a small diameter lens & 100 megapixel chip.
my roleiflex w/ 75mm f/3.5 Zeiss lens makes tack sharp 6x6 negatives.

Are you sure about that? Take a look at this camera: Seitz 6x17 Digital (http://www.roundshot.ch/xml_1/internet/de/application/d438/d925/f934.cfm)

Whopping 160 mpix!
The lens looks like a button on the body...

It's "handheld" too!
