Title: Resupply
Post by: FiLtH on September 27, 2006, 12:27:14 PM
Would it be possible where as a single fighter can strafe down a barracks in one trip, to make it easier to resupply a base? It takes like 4-5 trips atm in a slow goon, and a fighter can rush in and erase what just took a good part of an hour to repair.

It has always been easier to destroy that to build.....
Rome wasn't built in a day....
Blah blah blah

I'm thinking it's as acurate as it's gonna get.

This was why I was pushing for the formation option on goons - you could take 3x the supplies.  Would that really unbalance the game HT?  1 porker would still have his good time blowing down the troops, it just would take only 2 resupply goon runs to fix instead of 5...

Give us a reason to run the red-ball express... make resupply work more to the advantage of people who "take one for the team" and do the dirty resupply work.

EagleDNY, when I played regularly, I enjoyed recruiting pilots for resupply missions.  As no doubt you have done also.

When I resume playing, hopefully a couple of days, I'll look forward to it again.  I'm probably not a very representative example though.

I really like the strat/zone system -- it's strengths and vulnerabilities -- as laid out in Aces High helpfile.  Though I did not knowingly witness its vulnerabilities expolited to the degree I anticipated after buff and jabo work.  The fault was probably my haphazard observational ability.

The strategic play of Aces High satisfies me most because to succeed players set aside possible individual achievement in favor of an accomplishment greater than themselves.  Much like WW2 and life in general.

Within that compass, resupply plays a vital role.  If the number of posts and their urgency be an indicator, I am probably, but I don't really know, a poor representative of the "average" customer/pilot/player in Aces High.  If it were announced that fuel porking to 25% were back on and players encouraged to reexamine the strat/zone system vulnerabilities to be taken into account during country ops &/or strategy sessions (don't ask.  I've never been part of one either; but if they existed how fun would that be!?) -- I'd be quite the happy camper.

All that said, I would not be surprised to see one day goons flying in formation.

This has been a sore spot with many, many players for a longtime. I don't have all the answers to "correct" or "help" the situation. One thing I do know is, it's way to easy to kill troops at any given field.
Maybe HT wanted it this way, I'm not sure. I know all sides go on "porking" runs and if you wanna stop an attack just about dead in it's tracks, you go kill the troops.
While I feel this is a viable tactic to remove resourses for capture, it should (IMO) be much harder to perform.

Either or combination of:
A) The barracks are hardened to be killed by only rockets or bombs OR  XXX amount of cannon rounds.
B) Have the ability to put up adequate Flak batteries to protect barracks, if a lone Tiffy or LA7 wants to go around "porking" things up, fine,  then he should be met with horrendous AA fire when approaching the field. (Flak28's, 40mm Bofors guns, twin & quad 20mm, 37mm guns, 5" guns, 88's and so on)
(note: not that I am any A/C guru or ww2 plane professor, I have read tons of stories and books about ww2 pilots and their missions. As explained by many, the "Jabo" pilot had one of the most dangerous jobs of the war)
C) Leave the current system the way it is and learn to do something else

My 2 cents

At least with the current setup, the side with low numbers can force a stalemate and get some breathing room, and rearming works no matter what's porked. We've already got checks and balances, and it works. I'm not so sure that the system needs dumbed down.

FWIW, I've run more resupp missions than I could even count. With my AH1 squad, and later with Shawk's group, if we couldn't get ord/troops/DTs/radar etc, we upped a couple of goons or M3s. Problem solved. I can remember many times when HQ would get bombed, and within minutes there'd be a dozen goons up and otw. There's nothing to stop anyone from doing that now.

No offense intended; I just think this is one of those teamwork things that should require teamwork. The various strats affect a lot of people, and I think it's good that it takes more than 1 person to affect the strats.

Teamwork to defend it?  Teamwork to destroy it?

Again, the correct phrase here "should require teamwork"

I'll agree

I'm referring only to getting strats back up, if you haven't already guessed that. Having porked in 2:2:1 odds the other night as a means of halting a steamrolling of the rooks, I see the benefits of the system as it is now.

Until such time as we have balanced arenas, I can't, in good faith, support making porking any harder, or resupply any easier.

Maybe, one day, the supreme wirbelwind of justice will restore order. Until then, I think this is what we're stuck with.
