What does being a patriot mean to you.
please, spare us the dictionary definitions.
To me patriotism is understanding how your country works, what its laws are and what your responsibilities are as its citizen. In our country that means voting, serving in the armed services should that become necessary, paying close attention to what our government is doing and speaking out when necessary, for or against.
It means protecting our Republic so my countrymens children and grandchildren are able to enjoy what I enjoy today. A decent and free education, a decent paying job when we graduate, state and federal parks to picnic, hike and play in. Clean water, clean air. Basically leaving the next generation a nation that is as good, or even better, than the one I immigrated into.
We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. When the loyal opposition dies, I think the soul of America dies with it.

It was Hero Day at my stepdaughters elementary school. They went throught he classes, and asked each class a different question. One question was: "What does a hero look like?" Another was "What does a Hero drive?" But the best question and answer by far was:
"What does a Hero Say?"
Nathan: "Yes Sir!"
It did my enlisted heart good lol.
Anyhow, not relevant to your discussion really, just something that it reminded me of.
Now lets all be good automatons and get back to work.

It's never about what you say. It's all about what you do.

standing out in front of some courthouse somewhere...all steely eyed and statuesque

I'm with Bertrand Russell:
"Patriotism is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons."

That's spelt "paranoid", ain't it? ;)

mmh, Mel Gibson?

Patriotism is like religion...You are told "this is the way it is..Suk it up"...or else
To question it..especially if you are in the military(or in the local church)..Well,i'll let you ponder that one.
Faith in anything..is by definition irrational...Flags,religion,politics,countries..etc
Ponder a satilite veiw of the earth..guess what you don't see?
-
Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it. - George Bernard Shaw
But if you really wanna know what patriotism, go see the aerial re-creation team "Tora Tora Tora", and listen to the outro...I was in awe for day's after hearing the annocer talk with such pride and conviction...And he is right...No matter where your from (unless its Iran, Venezuela or France =) hehe), you need to know that you are from the greatest country that ever has been, or ever will be, in the history of the universe, and if anyone tells you different, you tell them no sir...you are wrong....man I loved that!

Declaration of Independence
The Constitution
Individual Liberty
Holding those things more important than flags or songs or greed or political parties or ethnicity.

Funked, don't you find it ironic that out of the 4 lines on your list, 3 come directly from greed?
-
I'm not naturalized yet, and those 3 things I will stand for, not for greed.
So what's your point laser?
I don't know about anything human not being trivial, in the grand universal scheme of things, but it's a fortunate thing to live in a country whose values happen to match your purpose in life.

I have no idea and have absolutely no interest in finding out.

My District Manager's favorite line is "It's not what you do, it's what you get done."

Ya got me storch, my only loyalty goes to that check the customers are giving me. Oh and yes, i am at work, but it's still too early for that glass of wine.

Greed isn't the nasty thing everyone makes it out to be. Greed is what drives people to success, to make more money, to work harder.
Greed only becomes a problem when you break the laws to get what you want.
-
Storch, i was raised in Asia by my parents who both were brought up in Africa. Nice try on the yuro bash though... not that i didn't expect it :)
-
not meant as a bash merely an observation.
-
Hurray for ambiguity..
-
Fudged definition? Hardly.
It's the government that has done this to you, and religion. You would be outraged if you only realized how bad they've screwed you.
Your government and religion tell you the same thing. It is bad to want more. You are fine exactly where you are. It is wrong to work harder. Your current job is fine.
The truth lies in exactly that. Both the government and the religion benefit off of you doing the same thing and not benefiting from your work. If you work hard, gain power and money, suddenly that means less power and money for them.
Thus don't do anything and appease your government and pastor.
-
I meant the ambiguity between yours, Funked's use and my interpretation of 'greed'.
You and I don't live in the same workd... religion and government have zero authority over my decisions.
-
Do you pay taxes?
-
Not yet.. but let's say I did?
-
Well, then you shot my point to hell.
All the standard stuff we do for government, like pay taxes, break laws, jury duty... It is all proof of government's authority over us. It's just that we've been doing it for so long that it's not odd for us to get bellybutton raped by a body of people who have power.
