Title: Success at last!
Post by: xrtoronto on September 27, 2006, 06:15:39 PM
Some of you know I've had a problem with exposure value in my photography and have been looking to reslove it for the past almost 3 weeks. Last night I was re-reading the instruction manual and found something called 'parameter' settings for image processing (parameter 1 and parameter 2 each have three 'sets' of sub-settings, with up to 4 selections in settings).

By default parameter 1 is used. It is set to increase the contrast, saturation and sharpness by +1 (each)

So last night I re-set the parameter setting to the other set of neutral settings and that has made all the difference. These pics are now turning out very natural looking; I haven't even had to photoshop these (except to resize for the bbs)

Well that's one big hurdle overcome.

Shots from today are 'test' shots and perhaps not very interesting (except for comparitive value from earlier)

Just some nearby houses:

A lone sugar Maple showing its fall colour:

Sunshine through the trees and a house:

You may recall I had problems shooting from shady areas into well sun lite areas. I walked over the Yonge St. (a couple blocks north of Bloor St.) shooting south toward the lake. With this neutral setting now in effect, the pics are coming out fine.

The harsh winter plays havoc with the roads. Every winter the roads contract in the freezing cold and expand again in the spring; Those semi-shiny black lines you see everywhere are where there has been a crack in the blacktop and they have applied a sticky tar/sealer to fill those small cracks and slow down any further damage.

This is typical for all Canada and the US who endure the harsh winters. There are also a large number of repairs that require entire sections to be repaved because the winter damage is so severe. Cities like Chicago, Detroit, Buffalo, Montreal, Boston and NYC all have the same expensive road work each spring.

I'm not impressed by any of the pictures. That's my opinion, since you presented them here for review.

Au Contraire, I am suitably impressed.

xrtoronto, I've been following these posts of yours and see a huge improvement in picture quality. Not that I am an expert or anything, just recognizing the endeavor to produce quality pictures (which you just produced IMHO).

I like them, this last set I would expect to see in a magazine.  Nice work. ;)

cheers,

Canada is a pretty country. These pics are technically very primative. I only say this as my opinion, and not an insult.

Some junior members are  pretty. Most are "BBSically" very primitive. I only say this as my opinion, and not an insult.

However, if you were to wear a thong with frilly edging (and red!...I really like red!), I might recant the "primitive" part.

BTW...You spelled Primitive wrong. If You are going to speak and spell the Queen's English, at least get it right.

no cheers for you!

That's what I like about this BBS...... as long as you don't make personal attacks, everyon's opinion is welcome.

Good looking shots toronto!  My EV is broke down into 1/3 exposure. Didn't know Canon went a full number. Wow! Looks good!

I'm not upset.

Back to the real topic though. I still like the progression xrtoronto (srry for the small hijack earlier). Still think the last few could be in a magazine...nicely done.

I'd say the blacks aren't black enough.

Thanks everyone.

I agree moot. As I said at the top of the thread I had not pushed these through any photo editing s/w. I was very happy to have figured out why my contrast was 'off'. These were all test shots to see if the new settings would make the difference I was looking for.

In only 3 clicks I was able to enhance the last shot from this:

to this:

3 weeks in...I'm feeling encouraged:)

The edited pic doesn't show up for me, in that last post.
I think it's promising that you can take the criticism and carry on improving your craft as you've been doing.

An uncle of mine seems to have made a fortune (near millions I think) as a photographer.
I asked him if he'd have some tips for me to remember, were I to ever take it up as a hobby, or more.  The gist of his reply was to stick to film, for the near future at least (digital cameras apparently are made for a short lifespan), and to do black and white.
Taking nice pictures, aestheticaly, wasn't the skill I'd have to learn most, but knowing what was going on, and anticipating what was going to happen, so that you'd have your eye through the lens and finger on the trigger when the "right moment" happened.
He said he didn't even look at and develop his pictures, till days or weeks, sometimes months after taking them.

For those who don't know how big these pics can be, this is the center crop from the above pic at its normal size before 'reduced to fit desktop'

I still can't see that edited pic :)
You know about the 1/2 size effect, right?  It might not apply to such large resolutions, but halving pixel sizes usually scales down with less jaggies.

Thanks moot.

I don't know why the edited shot is not showing for you. Is anyone else having a problem? It's showing for me ok.

If it's still not working tomorrow I will repost it:)

...a quarter of two...i'm off to bed

The 350D can use 1/2 or 1/3 EV it's a configuration option
