Title: R.I.P. Favorite Products
Post by: Halo on October 02, 2006, 10:20:41 AM
Take a moment now to bow your head and honor your dearly beloved favorite products (may they rest in peace), those triumphs of commercialism that made your life a little better but inexplicably were discontinued by their manufacturers.

This list is only for products so functional that they conceivably could be marketable forever.  It is not for previous milestones like classic cars or aircraft that may still be collected or used but clearly have been superseded by better products.

Here's a start to the list:

Colours shirts by Julian Barnes
Faded color casual long sleeves, all seasons, 100% cotton Sri Lanka

Sandalwood Bath Gel by Crabtree & Evelyn
Intoxicating masculine mystery scent from antiquity

Winchester Model 94 30-30 carbine
     Classic caliber and handling

Fruitberry Bubble Gum
Treasure from a little grocery in the front of a house

Pepsi Blue.

Pepsi always does it.  They make a new good product.  But then they advertise it so heavily, that the product either sinks or floats.  They spend so much on it, it's always a tremendous success, or it explodes.

F-14 Tomcat.  As the dictator of a small sovereign country with the need to project a "defense" veil around my island nation, I am disappointed that these fine aircraft are no longer available.  They would have been a perfect addition to my supertanker-based aircraft carrier.

A Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display (SED) is a flat panel display technology that uses surface conduction electron emitters for every individual display pixel. The surface conduction electron emitter emits electrons that excite a phosphor coating on the display panel, the same basic concept found in traditional cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions. This means that SEDs can combine the slim form factor of LCDs and Plasma displays with the high contrast ratios, refresh rates and overall better picture quality of CRTs. Canon also claims that SEDs consume less power than LCD displays.

In June 2006, Toshiba's president announced the company plans to begin full scale mass production of SED televisions in early 2008.
