Title: Recruiting
Post by: Saxman on October 07, 2006, 11:12:26 PM
Getting ready to make another go at my squadron, so thought I'd announce recruiting is open for:

VMF-251 The Buccaneers

This will be a Rook squadron based primarily in the Late War arenas. The intent is not to recreate a truly historical unit, but IS to recreate a typical USMC squadron in the Pacific. The primary aircraft for official squadron operations will be the F4U-1D, however if we receive the 1A when the updated Hogs are released we will transition to that model (of course, squadron members can up whatever they choose during "free flight").

My goal is between 8-12 pilots interested in teamwork and cooperation, using real tactics  for wingmen, flights, and full squadron-strength coordination. Sortie types will not be restricted to any one aspect of the game. We will particpate in both the furball AND the "War," wherever needed, including jabbo strikes although our primary mission profile will be as air superiority.

Anyone who's a fan of the F4U and interested in trying something a bit different from the usual disorganized horde is welcome, however I AM interested in veterans with experience in a squad and with the type of team-work I'm wanting to establish, who can help teach everyone (including me).

If you'd like to know more, reply here or drop me a PM either one the board or when I'm in the MA.

The Buccaneers want YOU!

I'm rather partial to the pun, m'self. :D

I'm not looking for a horde, but I'd at LEAST like one or two to start.

well, if it doesn't work out, 71 squadron flies what it likes, and we have a lot of fun together, should you ever decide to move on :)

wish you the best of luck with it though! i know from first hand experience how hard it can be :)

Title: Stay with it Saxman
Post by: Traveler on November 05, 2006, 03:05:39 PM
The 113th Lucky Stikes is a P38 Squadron employing WWII P38 tactics, flight leads and wingman, two, three, four and five plane elements. All fighting as a unit.  Have a great time putting ords on targets.  It took time and our pilot populations sharnk to as little as four but has grown to 12 now.  We are still attracting new pilots that want to be part of a team, hit its targets and RTB.

Stay with it, I know that their are others that think like you do.

Problem is I'll get one or two guys asking questions, but never follow up.

Get a website, such as a CSM site here (http://www.clansitemanager.com)

and then get a freewebs site here (http://www.freewebs.com) just to have an application form with an unlimited number of questions. So you know, the top two recruiting places (one of my questions is where they heard about us) are signatures here in the forums and the squads listings, but the squads listings have only become popular for my recruits in the last 3 weeks.

only way i have ever had much luck recruiting has been in the TA and other arenas.  i find asking people direct if they would join or not, and then sending invite right there and then is the best method.

this looks like it will be alot of fun, i do so very much hope you can get something started!

COME ON hog pilots, join up.

Hog is probably the most versital (sp?) plane in the set overall so over time you should do pretty well. What I'd do is ask on country channel if guys want to wing with you for hops. As you find guys who do you can feel them out....

With a couple of "hog squads" already out there I'd say alot of the experienced hog drivers are already in a squad if so inclined. Others like me are more concerned about the right mix of guys vs plane. For example I'm primarily a hog driver but fly with a "warm beer" squad that favors pink skinned aircraft (they are however a great bunch) which makes up for both the beer and the plane")......but hey they even let me fly hogs:aok

How VMF squads are out there?

And wat does VMF mean anyways?
Title: Recruiting
Post by: Auger on November 09, 2006, 03:28:06 PM
Naval terminology

V - Fixed wing
M - Marine Corps
F - Fighter

Not sure where V came from, but probably so it's not confused with the F for fighter.

I thought it had something to do with being heavier-than-air, as opposed to airships. So a VMF would REALLY mean a Heavier-than-air Marine Fighter squadron.

I believe that's why aircraft carriers are designated CV.
Title: Recruiting
Post by: Platano on November 10, 2006, 10:55:37 AM
so back then, were the aircraft on the cv's (corsairs, F6F's, Fm2's, F4F's) under the military branch of "U.S.Navy" or The "Marine Corp.", hence being called Fixedwing  MarineCorp.  Fighter?

or was Marine Corp a division of the US navy?

Naval squadrons are just VF....not VMF, IIRC.

The Marine Corps gets most, if not all, of its aviation money from the Navy.  So they tend to use a lot of the Navy's abbreviations and nomenclature.  Marine aviation units are named the same as a similarly equipped Navy squadron, but with an 'M' in the second position.  As an example, a Navy attack squadron is designated VA, while a Marine attack squadron is VMA.

Saxman,

I saw this post about your Recruiting for VMF-251 The Buccaneers

I am a New-Bee to AHII. But I am interested in finding a squad now.

A little about me:

1. I am a 58 y\o Retired Hospital Cardio-Pulmonary Services Director
2. What combat flight experience I've had was as a frequent passenger in
Huey's with Delta company 3rd Bat. 173rd Airborne in 1968 during TET.

So far I have

1.  Purchased a Saitek X52 System and learned how to Profile it.
2.  Made my own set of Rudder pedals.
See: Adding Pictures to your Forum Posts or Replys in the
Hardware and Software Forum. (Reply # 1)
3. Spent a lot of time in the Offline Practice area.
4. Since I first saw your Recruitment post I have been practicing
    with the F4U-1D.

I will be really interested in teamwork and cooperation, using real tactics
for wingmen, flights, and full squadron-strength

I am a fan of the F4U since Boyington and the Black Sheep.
I am not a veteran with experience in a squad.
I am interested in and capable of the type of team-work you are
wanting to establish.

There are some things that I can help teach everyone.
There are many things I can Learn from veterans with experience in a squad.

If I sound at all like what you would want as a squad member contact me at Roche11@Verizon.net.

My Name is Neil

online after you sign up (you get 2 weeks free sub without any credit card details. if you decide you like it it's 14.95 a month to fly online in the big arenas, but offline and 8-player multiplayer remains free)

training arena is one of the the online arenas once you log on :)

One thing to be aware of with Corsairs of all makes is that they're not easy planes to learn on. She's got a lot of tools, but expect to die often until you get a handle on them. So you won't get a lot of instant gratification out of the Hog, but she's VERY rewarding once you learn what she can do.

Anyway, welcome to the game, and thanks for the interest. I'm usually online in the evenings in one of the LW arenas so look for me. I'll try and make it on tonight.

Sax, I'm going to have time to start flying again soon, if I see you guys up I'd be glad to wing with ya.  God knows I need the extra protection as much rust as I'll have to knock off.  :)

The Buc's roster is now up to 5 full members, with a sixth in a recruiting stage so we're growing quite nicely and almost half way to my ultimate size goal.

However, I'm still looking for at least one, preferably two, more experienced hands interested in and capable of leadership/training roles.

Hey, I just got back in the game after a few years off. I used to fly with a squad that was similar to yours, we had to make 3 carrier landings in a row to get in. we had alot of fun flying the hellcats. so ill join up.:aok
