Does this picture seem odd to you?
-
No, how about this? (http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org/LRG/images/he111z-1.jpg)
-
Still no? Here it is in flight:
And a three-view:
This is a FUNNY looking plane, almost as wierd as the twin mustang. Its an He-111Z by the way.
-
you would think it might snap in the middle
-
Tow plane for gliders wasn't it?
-
For the largest of the large gliders. There was some problems with the middle spar, and flexing. They ended up attaching a bar that ran between the rear fuselages to help keep it from flexing.

wow. smart peoples.

Or, since you said what it was, they can google very well . . . :lol
That's what I had to do. I had no idea what it was. Thought perhaps a prototype for cross-atlantic bombing (but then the extra engine wouldn't have made sense for that).
The google on the glider said the thing carried 22,000 kgs of cargo. That's a monster indeed. Can see the need for 5 engines . . .

Solution for pilots who couldn't maintain formation.

Thats a HE-111Z its a duel heinkel. Ive seen em but I do not believe it was the ones that were towed by 3 110s as gliders. They can fly on their own

The HE-111z was built to be the tow plane for the me-321 'Gigant' glider as an alternative to using 3 110s as tow planes. My post was poorly worded so I can see how you misunderstood my meaning (if indeed that is what you were responding to).

Yeah, I found it on my main source for pictures, The Warbirds Resource Group (http://www.warbirdsresourcegroup.org). It is a great resource, I find.

If I hit the middle of the wing with a 30mm do I get 2 kills instead of 1? :)

Takes a wee bit more then 1, Heinkels were beasts. But yes 2 kills watch them fall into the inside and BOOM :D

Um, I know Heinkels were tough, but um, a 30mm to that center engine... Actually, thats a REAL bad idea, because then they split up and fly on their own, now you gotta kill TWO!!!:O

Neg, its not a full wing, they will fall from the sky

Here is another Zwilling type aircraft, this time involving 2 109s.

whast even cooler is the one with 2 P-51s they had as a prototype
-
The P/F-82 (twin Mustang) made it past prototype stage and scored (I think) the first kill of the Korean War.
-
ahh .. yes
http://home.att.net/~jbaugher1/p82_10.html
-
also some other hybrid aircraft people made

OK, but they do seem to carry bombs in the pictures

Woa, that picture looks photoshopped! (the one of the B-17 Liberator, or B-24 Flying Fortress?)
By the way, the Z in the He-111Z stands for Zwilling, literally meaning twin.
But here's one for you, what if one pilot wants to go right, while the other wants to go left?
-
The B24 is an interesting story. They did a flight test because the B17 had less drag on the nose. They put the b17 nose on the b24 body. It was faster, but also had some flight problems (it would swing side to side at high speed and high altitude, very disconcerting for the pilots).
The problems could have been any number of things, like the fact that it was simply attached to an existing airframe (I think a redesign would be required, personally) but regardless they decided it wasn't worth it.
-
As I recall, with the Zwilling aircraft, the second cockpit was full of radio and maybe even radar equipment, not another crew.

I know the 109 Zeilling was, but the Heinkel appears to have a full cockpit!

They meet in the middle?? :p

About right, I found this at Google
The He.111Z carried a crew of seven. The pilot sat in the port fuselage, with five throttles, full instrumentation, and controls for the undercarriage members and radiator flaps for the gear and three engines on his side. The second pilot in the starboard fuselage was given dual controls but no throttles, and worked the starboard undercarriage and two sets of starboard engine radiator flaps. The second pilot also served as navigator. A mechanic, radio operator and gunner were housed in the port fuselage, and a mechanic and gunner in the starboard.
-
So if you hit the fuselage with a 30mm not only does it catch fire but you kill everyone? LOL
-
What makes you think that?
