Padlock "locks" your view on one nme. I've never used it in AH but a long time ago Fighter Ace had it. Not bad when you're in a 1v1 although it's easy to lose track of your aircraft attitude relative to the nme. It's also very limiting in a large multi-bogey environment when you need to track multiple bad guys and not much use. A much better solution is to get good at tracking with the view hat or, my recommendation, get TrackIR. Although TIR has limits it's the most realistic view system anyone's come up with.

To lock on an enemy use the 'tab' or 'shift-tab' to highlight the target. It boxes the icon similar to a check6 call.
Tapping 'tab' will cycle through targets in your view while 'shift-tab' locks on the centermost target in your view.
Once a target is highlighted hit F11 to engage padlock.
If you want to padlock an friendly you need to hit 'Ctrl-tab' first to enable Friendly Lock.

There is, or was, an additional padlock feature that I have not mastered. As your padlocked enemy moves, your view will follow him without touching your hat. The trick is to move your plane where your view moves.
I did so poorly that I abandoned future attempts. However, I would not be at all surprised to discover that some pilots use it to good effect.

The thing I like it best for is flying in formation. Just using the forward view will put you to close to lead's 6 o'clock. I like being more towards their 4 or 8 o'clock and you can't see it very well without working and holding your hat switch. So, use padlock, lock up your lead, and slip onto his wing without having to use your hat views.
Works like a champ...
I get dizzy using it on enemies...

Since geting TIR I've never been shot down. Ever. Never ever. Not once...or even twice. Never. Honestly.:aok
This is a paid advertisement for the TrackIR system.

Since getting Track IR I have shot down Schutt 100% of the time. Even though Schutt doesnt use Track IR and is at a severe disadvantage.
