I too was trying to figure out my camera settings with some sunset shots yesterday, I'm not of Ripy's level, but some came out pretty good.
Anyway, some outdoor shots for the ones still stuck in their cubicals.

I'm honored but I'm no where near good yet! I consider myself okay with sports, but everything else I'm average.
Nice clarity. If you want a bit of advice, use the 1/3rd rule.
Rip-n-pasted:
The rule of thirds is the most basic composition rule in photography. It means, essentially, that you should imagine lines going through the frame at 1/3 and 2/3 of the way through. This can be horizontally, vertically, or both.Just imagine these crosshairs on your viewfinder, and try to line things up with the lines or fill up each successive section with a different, interesting thing. Often, it's better to fill up just 1/3 of the image with one thing and 2/3 with something else.
So essentially, when taking pics of sunsets or horizons, get mostly sky or mostly land, never split a photo down the middle with the horizon.
-
The one of the girl jumping is fantastic. Could easily be a poster. Think of some uplifting saying like "I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now" and print it to right = dorm rooms all over the nation.

Does it reall increase bandwidth to load the same pic with the same url?
I'm not sure, but I don't think so.

Cheap stuff man, it's a Powershot A540, $270 at bestbuy, saw it at $160ish on the web.

No it doesn't... but that's not my point.
While you are trying to scroll or read the page, it will scroll wildly while you are trying to read something, it's annoying. And it also serves no purpose.
-
Thats my camera! I hope I get good enough to take pictures like that. I bought it for $200 online.
-
REALLY nice Frenchy.
That is a fantastic place - now on my list of places to see.
I loved the silouhettes (can't spell that ....)

Rule of thirds on wikipedia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_of_thirds
It's great advice for new photographers. Use it as a rule of thumb for a while and you'll start framing your pics better.
I have almost 3 gig worth of pics from a 5-day trip to China I just finished, and maybe one or two will be good enough to post up here ;)

It takes video also.
This video was taken right after I got it but before I got the filter so everything has a green tint to it..

ah, i'm glad to see it's a Canon!!! I'm actually considering the 8.0 Megapixel camera that's part of the same Canon product line. about $270 at Costco. :)
Frenchy, do you have a sample of the video capabilities of that camera to share, by chance? I'd love to see how good the video comes out.
Please, please? :)
Thanks!

:furious     :D

It wouldn't be the Powershot A630 would it?
The one exactly like the one I have :)

The video capability is identical to that of the Canon G6, I believe its limited to 3 min max (160 and 320 res) and 30 seconds max (640 res) Here is an underwater sample (shrugs)

Woah!
Really beautiful shots Frenchy, eskimo, mightyboy!!!

I took 13:24 worth of movie today. Only about 3 minutes are anything you'd be looking for. I started the camera on 3 mile final and remembered to shut it off after the pax had disembarked and were well on their way to wherever it is they are going to.
I forgot my camera to computer cord otherwise it'd be in your email by now.
I'll try to take another video on the way home that with any luck doesn't involve crashing a trailing link gear airplane onto the ground hard enough to knock the camera off it's perch. ugh...my teeth still hurt! (wasn't my landing!)
-
If the video is limited, there'd be no sale. hehe
Golfer,
That would be much appreciated, man! :) I'd love to see the videos, and don't worry---aviation films never bore me.
Yes, the A630 is a camera that I'm considering. Or, for an extra $100, I can get the A710 with 6x zoom.
I've been meaning to ask my brother to film some of his runs.
btw, he'll be in a 2-week training later this month in order to fly his new bird:

that's why Picture Hangar is the best!!! :)
switching the host, now.

Nice resolution....so those little Powershots do a really nice job.
I was eye'ing the Sony Mavica's still...wonder how those match up to your Canons
-
TBolt I will say the quality of the video is GREAT!!!!!
The only problem I'm having is it saves it as an .avi file and when I try to open it in Sony Vegas it doesn't show a video.
It opens and plays in Winamp just fine...but I can't get any video in Vegas.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmm?

Try installing the test version of this file converter (http://www.download.com/AVS-Video-Tools/3000-2194_4-10557877.html). If you're trying to go from .avi to .wmv or something, this prog should work just fine.
Let us know how you do.
My email address for the video files is: tbolt at picturehangar dot com :D
Thanks again!
-
I know the email...problem is the file as it's now is 4:14 of movie is 309mb.
Giving the file converter a shot!
If all else fails i'll burn it onto a CD and send it priority mail.
-
Good news...it works.
Bad news...watermark.
If I can get it shrunk down to something send-able in size i'll fire it away tonight.

and finally a stop to my thread spamming...here ya go tbolt:

Ah, thanks for going through the trouble, Golfer. :) So beautiful -- flying through those clouds.
Video quality is excellent. I have a question about the sound, though. Does it record a normal conversation pretty well in a quieter environment?
Based on Frenchy's pics and your video, I'd say I'm sold on a Canon.
Thank you again, sir.
-
yes it does. it honestly doesn't do a bad job in the airplane considering its a few feet away from us with the mic pointing the other way while we were not trying to be heard.
I can't say enough good things about the A630. I haven't had to change the batteries with regular use (a few pics/movies per day) for the last 2 weeks. I use Energizer E2's, however YMMV.
-
Thank you, again. :)
