Post by: Mickey1992 on October 10, 2006, 02:36:27 PM: I wouldn't pay Barbara Streisand $1 to mow my lawn, let alone a couple of hundred to see her in concert.

Why is it that so many in the entertainment business are hellbent on shoehorning politics into their acts? If I had paid good money to hear her sing you can be damn sure that you would not get polite applause from me if she started to rant political.

She said, "the artist’s role is to disturb". Be disturbing on your own dime. If I pay to hear you sing, you sing damn it!!

They paid for a concert. She advertised that there was to be music. Instead she launched into a political statement. Sounds like a bit of fraud to me. Frankly I don't give a rats backside for some entertainers opinion. I do not pay them for their opinion. I pay for them to entertain. If they want to perform political activities they can do so on their time and money.

I don't like streisand so wouldn't have been there for her "concert". If I had been there I'd have left and demanded my money back.

BS has been in the fruityloop cycle for years, anyone and everyone knows she performs great music and spouts off about her political beliefs every chance she gets. It cannot come as a suprise to anyone who makes enough money to afford her concert tickets that she would foist her political views upon her audience.

If they go political and tick off 50% of the public, they've just ticked off a huge share of folks who wont care to see/hear their work. Now depends on the person. If they can afford to loose that potential market, yay them.

She's rich, she doesnt much care....and its no secret she wouldnt credit Bush if he found the cure for cancer. (Well she'd claim Bush lied and had the cure in 2001....)

As to her politics....she's got the same rights as all of us do to discuss our beliefs....but spouting off at a concert where people of different political stripes have paid good money to hear her perform is another matter altogether.

She's got a captive audience....and security to eject "disruptive" hecklers....which can include anyone who is incensed by the injection of political ranting into what they expected to be a night of entertainment and relaxation.

It's a form of abuse of power, or more accurately, celebrity status. If she wants to voice her views in a political forum, then let her pay for media time with her OWN money, or as a courtesy to her fans, publish the fact that she intends to insert political commentary into the time between songs. At least that way, ticket buyers can decide ahead of time whether or not the "concert" is a waste of their money.

I dare say she's totally unconcerned about losing sales from disaffected customers....there are plenty more out there who support her.

That still doesn't make what she did fair or ethical.

What ya wanna bet her "heckler" was a customer who was ticked off about her using a public concert, which he paid his hard earned cash to attend, as a podium to spout off about her political biases?

Since he paid his hard-earned money to attend this event, he had as much of a right to speak his mind as she did.

Agree or disagree with the performer, but this is just nonsense. Heckling isn't polite or nice or even OK in any circumstances. He could have just walked out and asked at the ticket booth for his money. Dangit man... you're kidding right?

Hypothetically speaking, if he felt that she had taken advantage of a captive audience then I suppose he felt that he had an equal right to give voice to his indignation.

Normally, I would agree with you that heckling is rude and infringes on the right of the audience to hear a speaker or performer.....but can you honestly say that it is NEVER justified?

I don't know what the guy said, specifically, but I'll wager that he didn't feel compelled to speak out until Streisand started her political rant.

The arrogance and temerity of subjecting ticket buyers at a concert to one's personal political views, in a setting where those who might voice objections can be summarily ejected, is becoming all too common a trait of Hollywood's elite.

I think there's a strong argument that given this was a concert, not a political event, that the person doing the heckling was actually BS.

Wikipedia says "a heckler is a person who shouts an uninvited comment, usually disparaging, at a performance or event, or interrupting set-piece speeches, for example at a political meeting. A heckler is almost always regarded as unwelcome by the person with justifiable claim to be the centre of attention. The audience too may find the interruption an unwanted distraction; however they may sometimes find the interjection amusing or apposite."

It sounds to me that BS's political ranting constitutes an uninvited comment to the audience within the context of a musical performance. Maybe BS should learn to be polite. She is, again within the context of the performance, being paid by the audience to perform her music, anything else is outside of the scope of her employment. Just my opinion.

Yet...I consider her conduct to be as rude as any heckler's. I would never impose my views on an audience that had gathered for what I had billed as a concert.
