I wandered into EW last night for maybe half an hour. Seems to me that place is suffering because the map is too big - or, perhaps, because the bases on that map are too far apart. Even though there were 15-20 people on each side, it was virtually impossible to find a balanced fight. You'd have two friendlies flying over that-away, two enemies flying over this-away, and 2v1s or worse in the sectors that had both red and green in the Dar Bar. I thought it was odd that it's easier to find a fight in the often nearly deserted AvA than it is in an arena populated by 40-50 people.

Agree, Oldman. EW needs specific maps.

Seems like a perfect opportunity for some talented folk to put together some purpose designed maps tor the new arena format!
:D

Give it another month or so. By then the other two arenas will be empty and the maps will come back. Logged in last night and only 29 guys in the EWA. I love those planes and the game play they generate, but with 29 guys on, half of which would have been milkrunning, it is just not fun.

People are under a misconception with the maps. If you look closely at every map... small or large, in most cases the distances between bases are about the same. It's the time required for reset that changes. Fewer bases means a faster reset.

the EW and possibly the mid war need maps with the fields a little closer together.

That may be true, but how close the fields can be does have a limit. The center island on NDISLES is about as close as fields can be. Make all bases that far apart and you have a problem with no speed, no altitude.
There may be people who like that, but most would just take off, climb out away from the fights and return with alt & speed. So, there's no real point to making the bases closer together. Just let people climb out toward the fight.

nhawk.. the minimum that HTC allows is 3/4 of a sector I believe. That would be great for maps in EW. It is easy to "get to alt" with that spacing since in most cases the ack protects the field you are taking off from.
The reality is that most people who like the EW planes don't really care to get much more than 2-4K alt anyway and all good furballs end up at that alt in any case.
When there is a fight at a cv or close field I rarely get about about 1-2k.. I see no point.
A good furball with such spacing would have some planes at 5k or so and another layer on the deck up to 2k. You could "get alt" if that is your thing and engage the higher planes or simply come in at mid alt and fight your way up or down.

Exactly, you only need alt if the other guy has alt. If every one is at 3K or 5K there is only one reason you would want to be at 10K (SHawk and Zazen would love to explain the reason :D )

I agree, each arena should have arena specific maps. The EW does need fields closer than the other arenas because the planes are slower. Hopefully, there will be some new maps before too much longer. :)

There's a lot of small maps HT used in the past isn't it ? just bring em back, some pple are not playing just for furball at 200ft high, and/or make Beta2 the permanent map on EWA !!!)

Quite correct Lasz. The problem that I have been encountering trying to make a map to these requirements is that it is difficult to get every adjacent base at the 3/4 mark. What I have done is make every base have at least 1 field at the 3/4 mark. So that any field will have at least an airbase, v-base or port 3/4 sector away. That was the best I could do.
I should have a base layout done by tomorrow on The Highland map I am working on..

beg to differ.
One need only to look at Frac3.
There are other things I've seen on maps. Like having an airfield surrounded by 3 v-bases. Why? No offense to the GVers but every airfield has a VH. When a base like this gets capped it take all the fighter jocks (like me) out of the fight. IMO there should be a 3 or 4/1 ratio of a-fields to v-fields unless you are building a TT area.
