One of the best albums you'll never hear of: Protein; Songs about Cowgirls.
Listen free:
http://www.rhapsody.com/protein2/songsaboutcowgirls
Check out "From Mercury To Texas" and "Drinking song"
A rock grungy up tempo country-ish "play it loud" album that has nothing to do with cowgirls.

Best thats come out the last 15 or so years is a great song here and there.

There was that one...Never Breathe What You Can't See- Jello Biafra and The Melvins. Other then that, the musical scene seems rather dead.

Are you saying the Church is emo? sigh
They are probably the most underated musicians still alive.
If you play, take a listen to that album and be inspired.
Just gotta love the narrowminded people that haven't a clue wtf their talking about.
Now go back to your radio top 40.
-
I dunno.... Morrissey and the Smiths kinda kicked ass....
Easy targets... but... uh... great music.
-
A friend of mine's band started off as almost Church rip-off in the early eighties. The Church had some very good songs. I seem to remember some pretty cool album art too.
"Ungarded Moment" springs to mind as a good song.
-
The Church, Tear it all away is good too.
Maybe it's just me looking back, but I think they had some good songs.

I'm 33 and listen to anything but Garth Brooks - present "Country". Kind of funny because last week I had a conversation with a 65 year old man about Willie Dixon. He straight up said "I didn't think many white guy's cared about the old Blues." We probably talked for about an hour about various styles of music and influences.

Roger that. I have EC's "From The Cradle" in my Z right along with Jimmie Vaughan's "Do You Get The Blues?" which won grammy for best blues album that year. I also have those with Band Of Gyspies "Live At The Filmore" (the double CD) and BB King's "Live At The Regal". Great stuff man, timeless.

are you trying to tell me
you cant judge a record by it's cover?
maybe not, i just wanted to pull off the emo-icon thing, but dont call me narrowminded.
people have told me i have a big head & i once defended Traffic's The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys as "not gay" - the high heeled is a reference to cowboy boots & it is teh gud muzik
- i forget, are cowboys still gay or has that worn off yet?

to me the cover says "i'm leaning on this wall & i'm not happy about it:mad: "
but if you rotate it 90 degrees clockwise, maybe it says "i've fallen & i cant get up"

Pffft Garth lives less that 2 miles from me. Drank long neck Buds with him once after balin hay. Great sense of Humor. He's just regular folk around here... the way he likes it.
BTW I couldn't tell ya a song he sings....
You outta see the spread of land he got his Mom...sweet.

Maybe your mind is skewed. First, I RARELY listen to country. If I do, it's not "recent country". IMO, Garth Brooks ruined country music with the commercialized hits. Newer "country acts" are nothing more than pop wannabes. Gimme Hank, Hank Jr, Merle Haggard, willie Nelson, Alabama, Chet Atkins, etc.

Only Traffic album IMO better than Low Spawk is John Barleycorn Must Die. Winwood and the late Jim Capaldi were amazing.

I agree, to an extent.
-
Not sure which band I detest more... The Police or Steely Dan. I'll stubb a toe running to the radio to change the station if I hear either one. And be happy about it.
-
these threads are almost impossible but what I am listening to lately is "Beatles for Sale"
some great classics on there.
Oh, and "Close to the Edge" is perhaps the greatest studio album evar. The soul on that album is alive, everything from the Roger Dean cover art and liner art coupled with the songs are simply wonderful, magnificant, epic.

Synchronicity II
Another suburban family morning.
Grandmother screaming at the wall.
We have to shout above the din of our Rice Crispies
We can't hear anything at all.
Mother chants her litany of boredom and frustration,
But we know all her suicides are fake.
Daddy only stares into the distance
There's only so much more that he can take.
Many miles away something crawls from the slime
At the bottom of a dark Scottish lake.
Another industrial ugly morning
The factory belches filth into the sky.
He walks unhindered through the picket lines today,
He doesn't think to wonder why.
The secretaries pout and preen like cheap tarts in a red light street,
But all he ever thinks to do is watch.
And every single meeting with his so-called superior
Is a humiliating kick in the crotch.
Many miles away something crawls to the surface
Of a dark Scottish lake.
Another working day has ended.
Only the rush hour hell to face.
Packed like lemmings into shiny metal boxes.
Contestants in a suicidal race.
Daddy grips the wheel and stares alone into the distance,
He knows that something somewhere has to break.
He sees the family home now looming in the headlights,
the pain upstairs that makes his eyeballs ache.
Many miles away there's a shadow on the door
Of a cottage on the shore
Of a dark Scottish lake........
