Title: Wood or Pellet?
Post by: Sixpence on October 15, 2006, 09:31:05 AM
Been looking into getting a wood or pellet burning stove. I was at the Topsfield fair a week or two ago and they had a pellet stove display. They vent right out the side of the house and you don't have to use a chimney. It was putting out an insane amount of heat. I heard last year there was a shortage of pellets around here, but they say that shouldn't be a problem this year. It's almost 3k to have one installed, but it seems like it would pay for itself and would be a good option if I ran out of oil and couldn't get a delivery.

Anyone have one?

If you go pellet, get one that burns grains as well

A lot of merchants hose you on wood pellets but you can often buy corn (the "oak" of grains for burning) direct from a farmer at a very low price. You will have to "clean" it to get the trash out but that's no big deal. Or you can buy cleaned grain and still save a bundle over wood pellets.

IIRC, you can heat a house on about 30 bushels of corn/month in a grain furnace.

Pellets are the way to go sixpence. They give you more heat for your money for sure. Make sure you get one that has an auto loader system tho. Its a real pain to get up at night to refill it if you plan on heating your house with it. It lacks som of the charm of a wood burning stove tho, and if you have access to your own firewood then go for a regular one.
