Title: screen freeze
Post by: easymo on April 15, 2000, 01:23:00 PM
Im getting from 4 to 15 hard lock ups a night. I have to restart computer to get out of them. Added to the odd disco here and there. I get the screen freeze offline as well as on ( watching film ect.)

 I have a 300a celery OC to 450. TNT2. 64meg RAM.Win 98. DX6.

Would a fresh DL of the game help.

I'll bet your computer is overheating.  Maybe try running with the case off for a night and see if that makes a difference.

Tryed that . didnt help. dumping temp memory(offline and on) seems to be the only thing that does. Maby I need more RAM.

When did it start happening?  Have you tried driver updates on your video and sound card?

I'm not a hardware guru, but I must admit that when I went from 64 to 128 ram, I've never had a lock-up since.  Could be the old rubber chicken I have hanging in my den from the Falcon 3.0 days.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Do you notice any regular interval in playing time when the lockups occur?

/no there is no pattern to the lock ups at all. I might get 3 or 4 in a row. Than go for hours whithout one.

are you deleting stuff from your HD's temp directory? How much free HD space do you have? Could be that windows trying is to use a swap file larger than the free space on you HD....

Just don't understand "deleting my temp memory".

Hi partner....

A beer at the first AH con if this doesn't work.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Get a household fan, open case, blow air directly over CPU forcing the hot air to exit away from case and other components.

Reduce OC from 450 to 300.

Run a program like MaxMem from www.analogx.com (http://www.analogx.com)  (free) and let me know how this works.

It is definitely heat and/or memory (64 megs is marginal) related.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Badger

CPU has a heat sink and fan attached. Ive tried the open cabnet, fan, trick. Did nt do anything. Puter does everything else great. So i think ill leave it OC,ed. I probably need more ram for AH.

I have almost the identical system. Celery 300a O/C 450 TNT2 (Diamond Viper II), but 128 meg RAM.

First, although this may not effect you, Bh6 boards with TNT2's need the RAM chips in the 3rd slot. Dunno why, just what the company said. As soon as I switched mine, it ran flawless.

Second- I can duplicate your problem everytime unless I blow a house fan right on my computer with the case open. As soon as I shut it off, I get maybe 3 minutes in AH, then lock up.

I also glued a heat sink fan right on the TNT board, it went from hot to the touch to smooth-cool-mean running mombo. Still, without the house fan, everything runs awsome EXCEPT AH. It needs the little extra air flow.

Of course a new case with several good case fans would be best but I'm not messing with it cause now it runs fantastic.

I forgot to add, did you check the heat coming off your TNT board heat sink? I only worried about the CPU as well, till i touched my graphics board. Damn near burned me.

I put a $6 fan on the heat sink of the Viper, HUGE diffrence.

One other strong possibility if you're experiencing weird slowdowns on your computer is to check for viruses and worms.  I was experiencing some weird slowdowns on my home machine and upon rebooting, found my system had been invaded by a worm.  After getting rid of it, things were back to normal.
