Title: WARNING! for myspace users
Post by: WilldCrd on October 16, 2006, 08:07:18 AM
over the weekend i let my nephew use my pc to go online. We went to check his myspace page, had some invites and when he went to check them out some insidious lil friggin programm installer got on my pc. It says its a anti virus program I got rid of 99% of it however it left behind this irritating lil icon in my sys tray that keeps popping up saying i have a critical error and to click on the ballon. when i clicked on it I go to this anti virus software page.
When this first happened i was in the room, there was no install warning it just installed from myspace. My anti spyware and anti virus stuff went crazy blocking it. Total file size was only about 16kbts
Just thought id warn ya'll
The website it keeps trying to take me to is :
http://www.virusburst.com

It looks legit however when i goto support to send em a message, it doesnt actually do anything.

I don't use anti-virus software anymore.  Anytime I get infected, I can tell what the program is by going to ctrl-alt-del .  It'll list the program running.  Then I look it up online how to get rid of it.

ran into that problem on  friends computer a while back.  he couldnt figure it out so i took a stab at it.

turned out it was a bogus site associated with a virus.

i tried 2 or three removal apps before it finally went bye bye.

its a nasty ugly little creature if its what i saw.

Just want till you get one of them hardcore viruses which append themselves to other EXE files :)

You could have one process running - "Explorer.exe" and still have a virus :D

Unless your nephew knows Photoshop really well, or high level statistics, don't bother.

For future prevention, consider switching to Firefox or Opera.  Much trickier to get these infections with those guys, you really have to work at it.

When you get something like that, search Google for whatever key word is dominant to find solutions.  I had to do that about a year ago for SpyAxe, one of the nastiest inflictions I've had.

Damn sir, I am sorry...I went through this problem a couple months ago and nearly lost all hope...I was within minutes of deleting my harddrive until I came across this page.  http://forum.tweakxp.com/forum/Topic4303-29-1.aspx
It takes a while, but follow all of the steps in order and it should fix your problem....

By the way....Search for my name (Cav58D) and keyword "Virus"...Click on the first page that comes up called "Major spyware problem"....

That saved me....Make sure you follow all steps in the page I linked you, because my problem wasnt cured until step 10 of 10!

also try safe mode and a restore point, consider turning off active x controls, and stop using IE and switch to mozilla (although minute spyware can get through)

Using Firefox is not a pancea as it pertains to keeping bad things from your computer.

If you do not take some time to setup the security, from its defaults, you are choosing to make it easy for bad things to get to your computer.

Nah Yeager.  I am online all the time, I do not run a firewall, nor do I use any anti-virus programs, nor any anti-spyware programs.  You just have to take some time to configure things properly and be a bit careful about what you click on.

MySpace and Youtoob are two fine examples of good ways to get burned.

I usually stay away from all kinds of "free" software and services unless its from some sort of large open source community. I dont even trust google even if they are financed by ads.

This wont keep me 100% safe, but so far i havent had any serious problem in my 10+ years of surfing.

Good rule of thumb.  I just stay away from sites which allow anyone to upload content to them, or if the servers are Windows based.

Well im quilty of both however I dont get click happy when browsing either, as my nephew did. today after school he gets to come over and watch as i go thru my registry with a fine tooth comb.....what fun:rolleyes:
hopefully the total boredom of watching this coupled with copius amounts of threats to his continued ability to use ALL the fingers on his hands will curb his appetite to try and get a lookey at free porn...since i have now discovered he had clicked a link on a myspace site to some cheerleaders cam (colledge cheerleader.....i hope)

I highly recommend that you take a look at this previous thread...I think it can solve your problem

Boy there is a lot of mis-information in that thread.

You do not need an anti-spyware program at all.  Just disable ActiveX, set the Java security to maximum, disallow file downloads, and disable scripting.  Problem solved.  No more spyware unless you make the choice to have it installed.

By default, if you do not setup your security, you are in effect acknowledging it is ok for spyware and malware to be placed on your computer.

Skuzzy do you have a webpage that lists step-by-step how to do those things.  Sounds pretty straightforward, but a list format would be nice ;)

I remember I got something like the Original Poster a year or two ago, it was called SpyAxe in which it installed bogus alerter that said you had virus and the only way to get rid of it was to buy their sketchy virus program.  If they're that deviant in trying to get customers, I wonder how disastrous buying the actual program would be.
