[rant on]
What's with all the "overuse" of "quotation marks?"
Why do "we" ... "use them" when there "is no" ... "quote" to quote?
Is the "only" reason to show some sort of "emphasis?" Or might there be a "deep seeded" psychological or maybe "socialogical" reason we "wear out" the "quote key" of the "keyboard?"
It's getting "tiresome" to see all the "quotemarks"

Would you rather see US do THIS instead?;)
-
it because you cant see us doing the "finger thing" you know when you hold up your hands and wiggle two fingers Quote - Unquote.
-
Wtf are you on about. We dont do that nearly as much as we should.
Sounds like "someone" doesnt know what they are for.

Quote marks are for quotations.

Because "this" is much easier than "this"

Yet we all understand perfectly why quotation marks are used when they're not supposed to. What's the problem?
We also understand not to misuse quotation marks in an official context.
-
Well as far as the "quote marks" are concerned...and their "over-use", all I can say is it "high-lites" the subject being discussed, and other than "CAPS", I don't know any other way to do "it".

Dont change the way ya do it.
If ya do
Like a bad wife.
he'll just find someting else to complain about ;)

Back in the typewriter days, quotes could be used in much the same way italics are supposed to be (since you can't make italics on a standard typewriter). Now that we have word processors and italics are much easier to use it's unnecessary, but it still holds over.

lol.. nice "Vulcan"

Well perhaps he would rather we do it like this[/COLOR][/b] :O
code is cool. :)

The Austin Powers joke is funny because Mike Meyers made fun of the "overuse" of "quote marks".
If I want to make emphasis there is another way to do it.

"whatever." said JB88.

Because "some" of us cant do that.

Much worse than any overuse of quotations is the way the word 'like' pervades conversation to an alarming degree these days.

That's right, Bennet Brauer here with another commentary. Didn't think the suits would have me back perhaps. Thought they'd have my dairy-air replaced by one of tem store mannequin well maybe I'm not "the norm". I'm not "camera friendly", I don't "wear clothes that fit me", I'm not a "heartbreaker", I haven't had "sex with a woman", I don't know "how that works", I don't "fall in line", I'm not "hygienic", I don't "wipe properly", I lack "style", I don't have "self-esteem", I have no "charisma", I don't "own a toothbrush", I don't "let my scabs heal", I can't "reach all the parts of my body", when I sleep I sweat profusely. But I guess the powers that be will keep signing my pay check until Jack and Jane K. Viewer start to go for the remote so they can get back to commentators who don't "frighten children", who don't "eat their own dandruff", who don't "pop their whiteheads with a compass they used in high school". Thank you, Kevin.

I don't use them solely to emphasize but do use them to emphasize a word or phrase that was made by another, which is proper usage.
