this plane would be a fine additon to this game it's a 2 seat multi gun turret fighter. but plz add 1 20mm cannon on the engine installation and 2 .303 machine guns it would be sweet:D
-
plus it can turn like a single engined fighter
-
like a spitfire with a gunner, and it has the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine
-
Hangar Queen.
Defiants had no forward guns, so HTC won't add them just to make her useful. Which she won't be. The Defiant was VERY quickly removed from service during the BoB because she was hopelessly outmatched by pretty much anything the Luftwaffe put in the air.
The only success the Defiant met was early on, before the Germans VERY quickly learned that they weren't Hurricanes as LW pilots thought on the first encounter with the Boulton-Paul but basically toothless and overweight (because of the turret and gunner). From then on, they were pretty much slaughtered.

Defiants were used rather successfully as a "Night Fighter" & were only suspended from Day Light Operations.
-
Agree - Hangar Queen.
MANY other aircraft that should come first.

Like the Westland Whirlwind. Entered RAF service in June of 1940. It was HIGHLY manoeuvrable, FASTER than a spitfire at low altitude, and its ARMAMENT of FOUR 20mm cannons in the nose made it a MATCH for any German FIGHTER of the day. Although due to some engine problems only two squadrons were form Nos 137 and Nos 263, and then later converted to the fighter-bomber role as the Whirlwind MK 1A. It had a top speed of 360mph (Remember this is 1940) and a range of 800miles. I think this should be added for BoB and EWA as a medium perked aircraft. This would kick A!

the defiant...from what i understand....sucked, alot.
had it's ENTIRE armament pack into a quad .303 power turret behind the pilot.
punch it in the nose, it will bleed. (like a b5n, those poor B5n's:cry)
suffered heavy losses, was quickly withdrawn from frontline service.
i'd prolly up it anyways though, lol, surely it could find it's place in the EWA or sum sort of BoB scenario though
The Whirlwind on the other hand....:D
MANY other aircraft that should come first.
Ki-43 IIIb, 2 cowling mounted 20mm cannons, 250 rounds apiece, as fast as the Nikkie, can outmaneuver the a6m...from what i hear:aok

In practice you would need a mate to gun for you, and after a few manoeuvres he would no longer be your mate, because he would be shouting at you to turn left, turn right, dammit, are you blind etc. There would be a substantial but very transient novelty factor, and everyone would fly the Defiant at least once, but there are many more pressing aircraft that could be added, such as the _______ ___________ (insert). It's one of those aircraft that people make allowances for.
In theory you could monster Ju88s, if they were alone. I believe this was the notion back when the Defiant was specified. But in practice you would need to be directed to the Ju88s from a great distance by ground radar, unless you are prepared to orbit behind the front line. Mushroom's book gives the Defiant 1 a top speed of 304mph at 17K and a time to 15,750ft of 8.5 minutes, with its 1,030hp Merlin III engine.
A turret-less Defiant might be another thing. Boulton-Paul's original concept model was of a four-cannon fighter that looks the spitting image of early Mustangs, but it was not to be. I suspect that even the optimum conventional Defiant derivative would be very mediocre by any standards. It would have been tricky to work out where to put the guns, and to compensate for the altered weight and centre of gravity.

Ok but the Boulton Paul Defiant was a radical concept but y didn't they atleast put foreward firing armament like a 20mm cannon in an Engine installation, and 2 .303s atleast
-
It would have made it more heavier, and then it would be slower, and then it would suck even more. If they took out the turret, and maybe added 1 .303 pointed back, and 1 .303 pointed forward, then maybe it could have been a bit better, and then add your gun package, maybe it would be a bit better, but I think they still would have sucked.

Agreed, the Defiant scored considerable succes during their first missions, after that, it went downwards.
However, the Defiant didn't get removed from service during the BoB, it actually served the entire BoB. (after which it finally was removed)
And like Flashman said, they were doing quite allright as a nightfighter.
And agreeing with Apeking, it would take at least 2 players to fly it with any succes.
However, considering lag it would never work.

considering the damage model and modelling of the .303 it would never be a success.
-
how about the 20mm in the engine installation a 2 .50 ca or 2 .303l guns plus an uprated merlin or the Packard V-1650
-
And a 4 blade prop with aluminum & steel alloy contruction and making a larger wingspan with thinner, stronger aluminum wings tipped like a Spit16
-
This isn't Crimson Skies Dan, the upgrades you're mentioning never were applied to the Defiant.
I doubt they even had plans like this for the Defiant eiher

How about using a F-16 and call it Defiant?? :rofl

Don't you all smell a troll? New forum acount. Has only posted here. Instantly ignores everything replied to his post to keep harping about adding stuff that was never there, to a plane that was a flop. I smell one.
EDIT: But then, my nose has been wrong before.

no wonder at your age!
