Title: Photographers: Do you shoot when its raining cats and dogs?
Post by: Ripsnort on October 18, 2006, 08:07:54 PM
I have to in the Pacific Northwest.... We've been VERY fortunate this year for football season, hasn't rained but 1 day during our football games.

We've been hired for Washington State Youth Soccer Assc., Semi Finals and Finals (12U-19U teams) on 2 week-ends (Nov/Dec) and guess what...it rains here alot!

I picked up this Probrella umbrella to protect the camera body alittle more. My existing rain hood isn't long enough for my new lens, so I'll have to get a longer one.

Modeling is my youngest Soccer(Football to you Euros) son.

I'd have to say i'd prefer that in hot or rainy weather.  Especially that hood, nice and dark, and shade!

Nikonos V bodies are about dirt cheap these days, maybe the RS is too...

i didnt!  i kinda had my BMW baseball cap on, with my rain cap over that as a big cover for my face and the camera (canon S3IS). The rain was coming straight down at first, but that img800 was the last shot because the wind started to pick up and started throwing rain INTO us. i couldnt shoot then as my camera was getting wet.

Instead we went back to the carpark and made a mess of it......

Dumb question mate.   You wouldn't happen to have any Senna pics from Silverstone?   I saw him in 86 and was too amazed to take a pic.

only been to 2 f1 races, i mostly go brandshatch and DTM, WTCC, A1GP and BTCC miles cheaper than f1

edit: infact i can go to ALL those events, for the same price as 1 F1 event

oops sorry ripsnort for stealing topic!

NP.   I just figured I'd ask ya.   I still like the WRC pics.   IMO, they're the best drivers in the world.

Lol, you haven't seen REAL rain if you think that little getup will protect your camera.

the best time to take a picture is when it's raining cats and dogs, see:

Rarely.  If I had to a lot, I think I'd try one of the water resistant cameras or a water resistant housing (available only for some cameras) rather than risking my dry weather equipment.

Which reminds me of a Nikonos long ago when I discovered how difficult it was to capture color underwater without flash.

you DO know that there is more action and more lead changes in 2 laps of a MotoGP race than in an entire race in those OTHER series, right?  ;) :D

I shot thousands of frames of film and something like 9,000 hours of video during the Valdez spill in all sorts of weather. All the protective gear that's available commercialy is lacking in one thing, IMO, and that's a heat source to keep the air inside the lens and camera body from condensating when you go back indoors.

If you let this condensation form and dry a few times there'll be a film buildup on one or more of the inside lens surfaces where the water dried, this can cause a loss of sharpness and in sevier cases it will limit the amound of light that can get through to the film or CCD.

What we did in Ak was that we made a storage container with a small heat source and placed it in the vestibule at our studios. Raising the temp of the gear slowly prevents condensation from forming.
