It is not done by same people who designed IL2. Don't put too much expectation on it...
-
Guess what, Battlefront is producing it.
Check out Battlefront.com they got movies, and lots of screenies.

Theatre of War announcement
What happens when the creators of the award-winning IL-2 Sturmovik and Pacific Fighters flight sim series meet with the makers of the award-winning ground combat simulation Combat Mission?
That’s right – it means WAR!
1C and Battlefront.com are thrilled to announce Theatre of War, the new groundbreaking World War Two real-time strategy game! Theatre of War depicts stunningly authentic battles of World War II between 1939-1945. Command hundreds of different unit types in 5 historically accurate campaigns (US, UK, Soviet, German, French and Polish). This isn’t just another WW2 RTS click-fest, but a thrilling Real Time Combat Simulator with an emphasis firmly entrenched on realism and detail, historical accuracy, and real world military tactics that will challenge even the most battle hardened armchair general! When the two teams that brought you the most successful and highly regarded combat simulations of the last decade come together, you can expect only the BEST! It’s time to enter the Theatre of War!
So.. these guys are lying then?
Not that it hasn't happened before, mind you.. just that it says right there in black and white from one of their press releases exactly what I said.

That’s a half truth.
Maddox Games (developers of IL2) did not work on ToW, majority of work on it was done by a different team from 1C. But since both of teams are under 1C, using some weird logic one could conclude that Il2 develops did work on ToW. It sure looks good to unaware on-lookers…
My info source comes from Oleg when he was posting on Russian forum.
-
I wonder if this will kill the developement of Combat Mission Campaigns.
-
They're working on new Combat Mission:Shock Force. Set in the present/future. Will definatley be an interesting title.
But I'll buy TOW as well :) Everything Ive seen so far, has been amazing. And has been in development for a good while now. I remember seeing Screenshots of it two or three years ago. Battlefronts knowledge on the WW2 Battlefield is pretty extent and I would be shocked if this game sucks or is unplayable due to bugs or whatever.
-
They've been working on Combat Mission Campaigns since 2005. But now TOW looks to be basically the same thing as CMC was supposed to be.
If TOW isn't turned based then I seriously doubt that it's trajectory and armor penetration aspects are going to be simulated as well as they are in the CM engine. So, with that in mind, I'm really hoping that CMC didn't get canned.
-
This is CMC.

Why is that a bad thing if it wasn't done by the same people who rippedoff.. I mean designed IL2? TOW is a strategy game anyway, not a sim or an fps.
-
I know Battlefront is very good with there Trajectory and Armor Penetration calculations, and I think they will make an effort to incorporate some of the Combat Mission features into it. Would be interesting if they added or incorporated a turn based game mode.
-
Looks much more like an update of "Close Combat" since the scale is very tactical, you move fire teams and a few AFVS as opposed to the much larger scale in units that "Combat Mission" has. From the AARs it looked more like platoon vs platoon sized fights.

Care to backup that accusation? What did Oleg ‘rippedoff’?

You never played Jane's ?

Yeah, and what were your first thoughts when you sparked up IL2 for the first time?
Here's some screenies.

My first thought? It looks awesome! (At that time I had top of the line system…..)
But if one sets visual options to low, there is a resemblance to Jane’s WW2F. And if one sets options even lower, there is a resemblance to Fighters Over Europe. So I guess Oleg ripped off Jane’s by creating a flight sim set in same time? By that logic every other simulation created after Jane’s is a rippoff…. Or is it Jane that ripped off Fighters Over Europe?

"Wow, this leaves Janes WWII Fighters for dead"
Not to mention every other (offline) WWII air combat sim ever produced to that date, and a few that have since been released.
-
Well .. I miss Panzer General .. and Panzer Battles (the board game from way back) .. and Squad Leader ..and Squad Leader:Iron Cross ..and Mechwar (also board games) .. and even Close Combat (I mean ..it was cool that they actually put in the animation and sounds of a tank running over some poor grunt who couldnt get out of the way ;)
To me it looks like ToW may be the one to fill that hole since I no longer have the desire to setup and run a 3-day tactical re-enactment of Combat Command A, 3rd Army, crossing the Rhine on the run against elements of the 2nd SS, Wermacht ad-hoc elements, and a pillbox. (I remember parkin a King Tiger on a hill top with a clear field of fire from bridge approach, down main street, and most of the fields outside town.. the crew abandoned the Tiger after goin bingo ammo ..it had been de-tracked by then )(3 P-47 air strikes just to manage that), but had 30+ AFV kills .. all in a days work for a King :)
I *like* small unit tactics. Would be cool to setup the ambush of Hoth's Panzers in the last battle of Kursk, when the T-34 proved once and for all that they could shoot Tigers up just fine ..if they got close enough.. among so many other battles to choose from ;)

Yeah, a resemblance, as in all of the options are the same. Gunsight view, bringup guages, wingman view, target view etc. Even the key commands are the same lol, wingmen dialog and subtitles presentation, layout and font, the sun, sky, clouds, even the same weird violet twilight. Damn the ID font is the same. BTW with 3rd party mods janes has higher res skins than IL2 allows.
Anybody who has played jane's and IL2 and says that the similarities aren't uncanny isn't being honest with themselves. I think most people in the flight sim community have known more or less that IL2 was built on jane's. If there had been no jane's wwII fighters there would be no IL2 today. True there are some who will vehemently deny it, but I think you'll find that they're types who seldom let reason cloud their emotions. That could be said for any brand loyalist. Be it WWIIOL or Mac.
Well oleg did say that janes wwii was his favorite game and you'll notice that some of his people have built mods for jane's.
Don't take my word for it, get yourself a copy of Jane's, you probably won't even need to remap your keys. And try some of the hi-res mods for it. I haven't tried them but the screenies look very good, instrument glass reflections that move etc.

Jane's was long dead before even AH came out.

Apparently you didn’t understand. I do (did) have WW2F and enjoyed it tremendously. You’re the one who needs to run IL2 on system other than hamster wheel powered 486. There is a very large following of IL2 series, and it’s not because of terrible product quality. If they share similarities, which I’m unaware of, maybe because those things make flight sim better. Just because most of flight sims mapped G key to gear, doesn’t make it a rippoff.

Demo came out yesterday and the game releases tomorrow.

Have we come a long way since Steel Panther :)

Looks really cool. Will be getting as soon as the first patch or two hit the street.
BTW, anybody want to buy my copy of Company of Heroes? Barely used. Great PC Mag rating. Good RTS game I guess, if you really like that sort of thing. I found out I don't like the pure top down RTS, though Battle Zone 1 is still one of my top 5 games of all times.
I know this is a general RTS type format, but it seems to be more of a true war game.

1C is a software dev company that is an accounting soft monopoly here in Russia.
I want to meet their accounting soft programmers face to face. They are awesome. I have to wipe their excrements all around - their product is unbelievable.
If the above mentioned game will be made by the same accounting team - then you'll have to install update into special temp folder then running a "merge" procedure that will lead to a total system crash and XP re-install. Installing an update right into an 1C folder will kill everything in your previous experience.
You may joke - but I have to support this epic crap...

A post above was written by Boroda, not Russian.

That Demo is pretty fun.

LOL
Used to have PG, Blitzkreig, D-Day, and Kreigspeil.
Miss those Avalon Hill type games. Particularly Blitzkreig
Always hoped they would port that one over to PC

So I bought the full version and have played it for a few days.
Over all its a bit disapointing.
The missons even on easy in the campaign mode are REALLY hard.
You can't load infantry on tanks.
Even though you keep some core units, what you can chose mission to mission is very limited.
They force you to start in a small area.
No 88MM AT or Flak guns.
Lots of vehicle model gaps.
No way points.
Limited control in campeign mode.
Maps all seem the same.
Aimed Mobility kills seem WAY to easy.
Huge LOS issues. The computer can see and engage you but you cant shoot back.
People talk about the Combat missions games being better but I have never heard of them.
Over all I think after the novelty wears off I will go back to Steel panthers.
Infantry can't go into buildings.
No mortars as part of your controllable infantry.
The missions are set up in a way that leaves you not much flexibility in how to win them, plus the LOS issues make it hard to sneak up on anything.
Over all, an interesting try, and maybe they will work out some bugs, but for it to be fun I think they need a better campaign, hell they combine the US and Brit Campaigns, how lame is that?
I wanted a campaign like the Steel panthers generator would make.
Over all Steel panthers WAW, and Steel panthers from the Camo guys is a better tactical game.

Bummer
Been reading reviews like your all over the net.... sigh this game had such high hopes.
Well hopefully Oleg will take the models and use them in his new flight sim..
-
Yeah it sucks, with a few tweaks it could be much more playable, but I dont know how quick anything is going to come.
ANother low point is you can't leave units alone, if you do you will come back to tanks facing the wrong way etc.
I don't know how many times I have lost a tank because I left it alone to defend a place and it spotted something exposed its side and died.
You need to be able to lock them into an action and you can't.
I wish someone would just go back and update the Steel panthers IA and graphics.
Also all tanks and vehicles STOP, YES DEAD stop, to change directions, this is really bad if the tank happends to be in the middle of an open area when you order it in a new direction. Tanks Didnt have to stop to change directions, nor did trucks.
-
I'm shocked to hear such bad reviews...
Battlefront....Why?
Should I stick with Combat Mission?

Hey SunKing, thanks for bringing back Dimebag!
Cowboys From Hell FTW!!!
