Title: I just watched 'Saving Private Ryan' - again
Post by: Gloves on October 23, 2006, 06:19:16 PM
The first 20 minutes - they still leave me speachless.  And to think that's nothing like what it was for real.

A huge to those that stormed the beaches.  I question whether or not I could do it.

Omaha beach was a bungled situation.  The bombers missed.  The shore bombardment was of no effect.  The amphibious tanks sank.  So really, all that got ashore was light infantry, whilest the defenders (ironically, a large percentage weren't German) had heavy machine guns, direct and indirect fire cannons, and mortars.

A few cruisers did get close enough to the shore to provide direct fire.  One cruiser, I cant remember if it was british or U.S., hit a mine, split in half, and sank almost immediately.

Of the prisoners that weren't shot immediately, it was found that there were Polish, Russians, and even some Asians manning the bunkers.  In one case, as the Americans approached a bunker, a single gunshot was heard.  The conscripted foreign troops shot the only German in there with them, and subsequently surrendered.

I do a WWII reenacting impression of the type of unit that was at d-day, and manned the bunkers.

The one you talk about where they shot the only german, who was their commanding officer, happens to be POA, Russian Liberation Army, Russians that hated communism, enough to side with the Nazi's only long enough to try and get to the USA, they hated the Nazi's aswell.

The majority of the Asians, were most likely Mongol, but their were Jap's (Shortend for spelling, I suckah at it) at omaha beach in the bunkers.

I met a D-Day veteran once...

His wife told me his stories, while he stared off into the distance, every now and then chiming in about the French Women and HitlerJugend, with his wife rolling her eyes at the French Women., :lol .

She herself was a WW2 Vet, I belive she was a stewardest/supply chief on a naval ship.

I'd heard there were some Korean defenders as well. Can't remeber the sequence of events, but I believe it was 1) Captured by the Japanese (years and years before) 2) Captured by the Russians 3) Captured by the Germans, then 4) Captured by the Allies.

Poor buggers.

I heard they had some Martians defending the Normandy beaches too, got them to hide their space ships in a nearby cloud bank.

Can you imagine the hearings on Capitol Hill and the press reports if that happened today?

My greatest Hero stepped off a boat there in '44 and continued on through to Germany (via belgium if i remember right) were he was wounded and finished the war in a French hospital.
The opening and closing scenes  kill me.

I remember I was talking to him back when I was playing Air Warrior and I said "hey Pops  I shot down a p51" .. in his usuall style he came back with "what the hell you shooting our guys down for?"

<> DAD miss ya

I consider one of the biggest mistakes in my life as buying Saving Private Ryan when it was on sale.  I saw it on sale at wal-mart for 10 bucks in a neat little tin.

I thought to myself, this movie wasn't that good, but is it worth buying it for 10 bucks?  Just to have?

After forcing myself to watch that piece of ****, I've come to the conclusion that it was not worth 10 bucks.  If I had never bought it, I'd probably only pay 30 cents for the paper the inside cover book is worth as toilet paper.

lmao seriously, life is good if that's your biggest problem....Reminds me of phonebanking for Congressman Shay's last week....I call up a ghetto in Bridgeport, and some latin woman who can barely speak english picks up....I ask her, "what is the most important issue facing you and your family in the upcoming mid-term elections"?  taxes, energy, wot, economy ect.....

She thinks about it for 30 seconds and tells me traffic lights.....lmfao I had to hang up I was lauging so hard....

So to make a long story short, if SPR or traffic lights are your biggest problem, then gooooooodamn I wish I had your life

The Bedford Boys (http://www.amazon.com/Bedford-Boys-American-Ultimate-Sacrifice/dp/0306811677)  is one heck of a book about the men who died on the beaches that morning...

What on earth are you doing phoning the ghetto?

Haven't you ever heard the phrase "A [insert minority] man voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders?"

('Course, perhaps you have, but you're hoping they haven't :D )
