Title: Host changes today
Post by: hitech on October 25, 2006, 10:38:01 AM
We made a change today in the arena caps. Between Midnight and noon Central time the starting arena caps for the LW arenas have been raised from 120 to 200.

This after noon we will be adding a .sr "Squad roster" command to display what arenas and who of your squad are online.

Any chance of getting this for a "buddy list" for those not in a squad?

and thanks for trying to adjust the game to the communities feedback!

Between midnight and noon?

So caps raised when they are needed the least, or should it be noon to midnight?

Seems strange to have increased caps during the wee hours of the morning when there are less people on.

This is so all the UKers and people not on this side of the world can fit more into one arena. So theres a better chance of 140 non U.S. players fitting into one room rather then a arena with 120 players and another with 20.

Unlike the U.S. main hours of play when we can easily fill 120 in one room and enough in another to have some fun.

Me thinks.

I thought the non US players main gripe was the multiple arenas spreading players all over the place, not the caps?

Who knows, I've given up even trying to understand some of the recent 'enhancements' for gameplay.

Any chance the arena tag that is attached when using either the page or squad text across arenas could be changed to reflect the color coding? Instead of Late1, Late2, etc, having it display LWBlue, Orange, Chartreuse etc after the gameID?

Kev, think about it.  With higher caps they WON'T have to be spread out over two arenas, because everyone in off peak hours should be able to fit in the same arena.  Duh.

Yes, thats definetely one of them. The main issue is having two LWMAs during the quietest periods. Im sure the caps was also an issue for lesser quiet periods as well, so i guess this will address the later - thanks HT.

Arena caps are not the answer, limiting players killz the one aspect of the game i enjoy, I can not speak for others, but this has not changed my outlook.

sr. is a good command, but the usfulness would have been better spent inside MA with the EW and LW arenas...the game as we knew it is dying a slow death, no competition, no missions, and even less reason to win a map than after the last change, if my being vocal bothers you I DONT CARE, I like this game to much to quite playing without a fight.:aok

The game as I knew it is in fact dying a slow death... and I wish there was a way to speed it on it's way.  I see far more positives since the arena setup change than negatives.

The new Terrain Editor coming out at the start of the year has really got the terrain team doing some incredible things with events.

The players in the multiple MAs are usually enjoying themselves, at least that's what I see when I manage to get some time to login.

The fights I've been in have been a mix of white knuckle intense and funny beyond belief while flying with some people I don't get to fly with normally.

Overall enjoyment of the game has increased dramatically for me.

But then again, I also like to create my game environment, so I guess I get out of it what I put into it.  I log in Looking for a fun night, not expecting a bad one.

As for 200 or 600 people in an arena, frankly, I've yet to engage in a 1v599 furball, normally get around a field with 20 to 40 people fighting over it TOPS, so I'm totally confused with how a 300 cap limit really effects anyone negatively.

btw, soulyss, Yolo County eh?  Kewl, me to.  No on H and I  :D   SMUD takeover is a joke!

Has anyone here ever flown in a 10 plane P47 heavy mission?
and blown an nme base to bits despite the 20 upping ftrs? that is the future of this game......co-operation, and enough ftrs to put up a defence worth breaking,
Look I know its hard, i died so much in Ma before i learnd the skills that i almost quite, but within the last 2 years ive started climbing the ranks, through name changes, house changes, and computer availability I have followed this game, I flew Air Warrior before it......I am a squadiiiieeeee, I love the CHALLENGE, the days of kill or be killed are over.....the mass crush of it all, the knowledge that you where diving in on 5 nme's is over,{4 of us}  took 4 JU-52's with 1800kg worth of bombs each into an nme capped base as a squad and killed thier ability to up ftrs, and they couldnt up in another room, and ALL of the NME's team would know that our squad had done this.......all of them, not half, or a third... the game had more relevince then, more pride in accomplishment, now im empty, of course i can blast an nme front airfield to bits in the new setup, byt its so less meaningfull now that I dont have to kill 3 ftrs doing it...

Heck id even take the last change of three capped time periods over this, it feels like punishment, and Ive heard pilots tell me the very same thing, one unknown online referd to the changes as a feeling of being "squashed" and I feel the same way,, it took cunning to fly an effective attack before, now its an attackers dream...it feels like cheating and I dont like it.

ok, nice to have the change... hopefully it works out...

However: what is the MIN players LW (or AH as a whole) sees offpeak? the lowest ive seen is 100ish. Surely something around half that figure would be a better place to start the caps?

reason:
as you've said you're self, the "horde" always joins the bigest numbers, and that surely means that LW1 will have 200, while LW2 will have 0. Then, comes the point when people need to start joining LW2 even though its empty. this is where the whines start.

IF the cap started at 60 (just an example) there would be two arenas with 60ish people within, and never the point of a empty server and people having to be the first to join it and sitting there to wait, with no game to play?

catch what im trying to say?

maybe the new arena naming voids the point i was trying to make.. i dunno, will see how it goes.

thanks for the .sr command

my gripe was there is about 120-140 people online between noon, and 6pm (when us numbers really start to pick up). this ment we had LW1 full, and the rest rather empty... meaning we had no way of getting into anything "big".

This change just moves the "problem" to later in the day, once it reaches 200, the players only have the almost empty server to join...so its removing the problem from the noon-6pm players, but moving it to the 6pm-8pm players.

Really dont know yet however, as the arena name change might have changed that itself.

lets see how it goes

Last edit:

I think they are trying to do (within bounderies) what people ask from them.

I agree with Soulyss. HTC has stated their *reasons* for the changes. And thinking back to the BBS then, the "battle" between Furballers/Strat, the crys about numbers, etc etc etc (im not going to list everything here) had reached an almost nutolerable level. Eveyone asked HTC to DO something and they did. I really wish people would stop posting/complaining and start *playing* again.

i think they didnt properly think out the possible results of the first change, and have had to do many changes/tweaks since, to try and work (force) it the way they planned. Been a bit of a botched up job if you ask me.

its how the changes happen isnt it? some whine about gameplay and MA, HT agreeing, changing, changes annoy more people so they whine, HT changes a few things to help the whiners, and things start to settle.

stability now is the key to reducing the whines..... at least in my mind
