I've decided to try my hand at skinning, not so much for others as much as for myself. I mean, It's all well and good to fly with the Tuskegee Airmen, or Adam and Eve squadron, or the Black Sheep, but damnit, I want to fly under my own colors!
so I figured I'd take the P40E and reskin it, shouldn't be too hard, right?
How wrong I was.
I origionally tried these two as nose art, replacing the "ARIZONA" with "OH SHI-" and "LUFTWAHA" respectively. didn't work, the skin just wouldn't show up. in the viewer, that is to say invisible.

Then I thought of trying something already in the game, just experimenting at this point. and this didn't work either.

What do I do?

apers i presume u made a seperate folder for the p40e and named it p40e1
did u get just a invisavble plane?
if you got just a blamk space in the viewer or off line in the game then you proberly didnt put the skin back to 256 colours and save it as a bit map
you have to save it as a 1024x1024 8 bit <256 colours> bitmap
.
please describe what you have done so far then we might be able to help you

the program I used(Paint.net) only had the option of"Save as bitmap", and the skin file I saved in the P40e1 folder is the same as the one i posted.
And all I got was an invisible plane.
Know where I could get a template?

Watch out though, some are for the old models which have since been redone.

Apers,
If you don't want to spend the money on a graphics program, download the GIMP at http://www.gimp.org. Its a full-featured graphics program with much of the same functionality as the big name programs. Best part is its free. Tons of tutorials on the site as well to teach you how to use the program...

..if it's invisable..you have to reduce the colors to 256.

Thanks to all of you. your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Two things: how do I convert it to 256 color bitmap, and I need to find some gaping maw noseart.
like the shark mouth.
