Title: Katyusha
Post by: Yoshimbo on October 27, 2006, 03:42:57 PM
i'm talkin' 'bout the

BM-8
BM-13 and
BM-31

Rocket artillery used by the RKKA in WWII

used since 1941 and haven't stopped being used since.

BM-8 in service 1941/42
BM-13 in service 1942
Bm-31 in service 1944

trucks with rocket racks firing salvo's of 12 to 18, 80mm to 132mm (and i belive later some 300mm rockets where used) rockets = big time boomage. kiss those towns and bases goodbye.

the BM-8 could be either on a truck or T-40/T60 light tank chassis
don't know if the others could be on a light tank chassis as well

I also don't know of the effectiveness these rockets had against tanks

here's some pics (all BM-13s i believe)

what do you think? is it time for some mobile artillery?

The Soviet rocket Artillery while damn impressive - really wasn't THAT acurate from what I have read. Still I guess if you put enough ord in the air you are bound to hit SOMETHING.

I personally would prefer some regular artillery similar to what there was in the old WWI DAWN OF ACES sim. If you were near a front line artillery base you could call in ranging shots till you were on target then you could call in a barrage.

Be cool to have some SP Artillery.

OK NOW HiTech how much to get this pice in there?!!

Theank you Jester Lovely find if I do say so. Going to ad this as my desktop WOO HOO!!

To be truthfull I was with the 1/33rd F.A. 1st ID in Bamberg Germany. I was a crew chief on the MLRS. It's a nice pice to say the least lot of fire power to put down range.

MLRS info here and some pic's (http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/m270.htm)

Description and Specifications
The MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) is a high-mobility automatic system based on an M270 weapons platform. The MLRS is capable of supporting and delivering all freeflight basic and extended-range (ER-MLRS) rockets and the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) Block I missiles.

The MLRS launcher unit comprises an M270 launcher loaded with 12 rockets, packaged in two six-rocket pods. The launcher, which is mounted on a stretched Bradley chassis, is a highly automated self-loading and self-aiming system. It contains a fire control computer that integrates the vehicle and rocket launching operations. Without leaving the cab, the crew of three (driver, gunner and section chief) can fire up to twelve MLRS rockets in less than 60 seconds.

Length: 22.4 ft

Not relly into the battle ship thing Arty would be a lot better more moble inthe long run plus if we get a battle ship we would have to wait forever to get to use it. IE the CV. But I dont want to hijack this thred from the arty thing.

I say rocket Arty all the way or well some kind of Arty.:aok

Actually, BM-13 was used first in jule 41. BM-8 came in service somewhere in early 42 and BM-30 in middle 42. BM-31 was practically BM-30 adapted for new 300mm rockets (early 43).

OK Red, if you insist on Rockets.......

How about a M4 "Calliope" SHERMAN.  You could fire the rockets off and with a flip of a switch eject the whole rig if you needed to fight it out like a regular tank.

Speaking of artillery, I've seen guys in planes calling out range on artillery, mostly for ship guns pounding fields. I thought it was extremely cool and a very good example of non-a2a cooperative play.

There are people who DON'T call out artillery?  Do they not guide GVs hunting for enemy GVs as well?

Bozons.
