Aleutian Tigers

As part of their plan to expand their empire in the
Pacific farther eastward, the Japanese initiated the
Midway-Aleutian operations by conducting a carrier
strike against the U.S. Navy base at Dutch Harbor as
a diversion to the main offensive against Midway
Island. The raids, carried out 3-4 June from the
aircraft carriers Juyno and Ryujo, were the only
major air attacks conducted against North American
soil during World War II. The attacks by Vals and
Kates and Zero fighters inflicted minimum damage.
Eighty-six Army and Navy personnel were killed and
eleven aircraft were destroyed. A number of buildings
and fuel tanks were also demolished and a barracks ship,
the Northwestern, was damaged. In return, 11th Fighter
Squadron fighters based at Otter Point, an airfield
built in secret near Dutch Harbor on the east end of
Umnak Island, intercepted and shot down five Japanese
aircraft.

Yes, very nice terrain.

Also, if you haven't seen the terrain yet, I'd recommend to go to the snapshot. And a bit earlier than usually, reserve some time for the terrain download.

Title: The Thousand-Mile War
Post by: chance-airwolf on October 31, 2006, 07:33:00 PM
The Thousand-Mile War by Brian Garfield (SBN 345-03031-1-125)...  was the first [unauthorized] history of the Aleutian Campaign to be published.  Interesting read about the fifteen-month war on US soil that involved about 500,000 American, Canadian, Russian, and Japanese soldiers - Navy and Army, Army Air Force.

Interesting idea for a snapshot.

My dad was fortunate enough to be stationed in Yakutat, AK and not in the Aleutian Island chain.   MSgt, US Army Infantry, ORP Hq 127th Bat., 80th Regt.

Any other fathers or grandfathers serve in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater?
