Saw the first one about a month ago;  1 was about Bud Anderson flyin his Pony against a 109, 1 was about Boots Blesee in his F86 against Mig15, last one was Cunningham/Driscoll in their F4 against Mig21..... VERY entertaining program.

Great pilot, but he really should have stayed out of politics. Made me sad when i heard about his troubles. Is anyone in Government honest anymore? (or where they ever?)

As soon as they claimed the P51 climbed better than the 109 I turned it off.

They never claimed that...they said in that particular situation that Anderson was able to see he was outclimbing the 109 so he basically roped him. They didnt go into enough detail about how they went from the first situation where the 109 almost roped the 51 , to the 2nd one where Anderson was able to rope the 109. Anderson could have conserved his E better than the guy in the 109. Plus did they even mention what kind of 109 it was? Maybe it had Gondollas for bomber interception...maybe it was weighed down. Maybe it was having engine problems. There are a billion variables that can happen in real life that arnt modeled in our game. Maybe the guy was a crappy pilot. My point is it was a general show for a general audience and it was very entertaining. The only thing that kind of bugged me was when they said Cunningham shot down Toon who didnt actually exist, but whoever it was in that plane, he was damn good.

The heavier aircraft will do better in a zoom climb.. Potential energy is greater. Add a speed advantage and it's compounded.

New pilots reporting to the 8th Fighter Command were told that both the 109s and 190s were better in a straight climb. They were also told that the P-47 would chase them down in a zoom climb. Avoid the first, utilize the second.

A standing comment was, "you're at 25,000 feet chasing a 190 that is climbing away from you. Don't follow him. Instead, dive down to 20,000 feet and zoom up. You'll beat him to 30,000."

Some Jug pilots still swear it was true....

My regards,

Widewing

When I first saw the commercial, I thought it was a new fighter sim. I was ready to sign up.

Thats what I thought. I figured AH either got a competitor with better graphics or HT started a new commercial on the History channel.

Good points Widewing, but IIRC the verbage they used wasn't to that effect.  It might have been intended, but it didn't come off that way.

Either way I agree with you.

Imagine how good the show would be if most of us didnt do most of those dogfights everyday for the past some odd years. Sitting there watching thinking to yourself he should have done this or dont that. Or yelling noob at the tv.

"Take that you alt dweeb! You just got pwned!"

Thats when your family rethinks their relationship to you. And also tries to figure out what pwned means and if its a swear word or not.

For anyone interested this (http://www.spitfireperformance.com/mustang/combat-reports/357-anderson-27may44.jpg)  link contains Anderson's after action report from that fight.  You can read the first chapter of his book, which describes the fight in more detail here. (http://www.cebudanderson.com/ch1.htm)

The Bf109 units that were in action in the area on that day all appear to have been equipped with basic G-6s, while Anderson's "Old Crow" was a P-51B-15 with a V-1650-7 engine.  He probably would have had equal or slightly better climb performance at that altitude along with a massive speed advantage.

I have actually slipped up on at least one occasion at work and said "roger" to someone on the phone from an insurance company. :)

Heh!  I sometimes find myself answering "roger that" when I'm mean to convey that I heard what a person said, understand it, and am on it (or sometimes "Roger that.  I'm on it.")
