Title: Question About packet Loss
Post by: Keeler101 on October 31, 2006, 04:33:37 PM
During Prime est hours Im getting Really bad packet loss but only from say 8 to 11 after that back to normal

I know due to more people being online with winter here almost, its net congestion

Im only having problems  after my isp servers, Do servers dump packets when there so full?

Is there anything can be done? If so ill post trace if there is

Packet loss is indicative of routers which are simply overcrowded or a connection which is saturated.

Servers are typically connected via dedicated Ethernet connections so they are far less prone to dropping packets than routers.

Ethernet switches can also drop packets, but are less prone to do so than routers, but more prone than servers.

If the connection you are seeing packet loss on is at your ISP's gateway to another ISP, then you can contact your ISP about it.  However, be aware they probably will not do much if the routers are not having an issue outside of overcrowding.

But, you never know until you try.

Will my switch to dsl elima. this problem or will it be possibly going through same routers, Im on dialup right now

Hard to say.  It depends on who the ISP is and who they use for thier gateway to the Internet.

If on dialup check to see if there are any other access numbers you can use.
I used to do that when I used Earthlink dialup and sometimes a different number didn't go thru sprintlink. Sprintlink was one hop I always wanted to avoid.
Of course the nature of the net may have changed and that option is no longer available.
