After reading other threads, I'm wondering how many fellow musicians there are here?
Wonder if there's something about flying and playing music that brings certain types of people together?
Now that I think about it, I bet there are a lot of software developers or technical people here also :-)
You guitar types should check out http://www.fretlight.com ;)
-
Hey Calan,
I'll add myself to the list of musician types. Been playing since I was just a kid. I currently play in two bands full time and sub in many others.
Band 1- Jump Jones http://www.jumpjones.com
Mostly jump blues from the likes of cats like Louis Jordan, Wynonnie Harris, Big Joe Turner etc... We also throw in a little straight ahead jazz, blues and 50's rock and roll. I drum and front this combo with the lions share of the vocals.
Band 2 - Smokestaxx http://www.smokestaxx.com
60's Memphis soul from the likes of the Staxx recording label aka Sam and Dave, Wilson Picket etc... Also have a little Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stones, The Meters etc... thrown in. Was intending to play trombone in this band but the day job kept me to busy to learn the charts, so, I am just a drummer here. Nice to just sit back and play and not worry about fronting the thing.
None of these bands really make much money, but they provide a lot of enjoyment. Heck last weekend Jump Jones played a halloween show where a little 14 year old girl, who was dressed as Lisa Simpson, happened to be a tenor player. For fun we we put her on stage to blow with us and she was amazing. We through all sorts of charts in from of her and she was right on top of them. Then we through some bebop tunes at her with all sorts of weird changes and she took chorus after chorus of solos. Was amazing to watch someone so young with so much talent. Who cares what the pay is when you get to experience that!!!

Drumming for 30 years - original bands, recording bands, cover bands, television, radio, teaching. Work in IT. Play computer games. I just looked at my wife. None of those things got me any chicks. I want my life back.
-
LMAO Palef :lol
As for me... been playing guitar and a little on keys for 27 years... do a lot of MIDI programming.... developed some music software... (taking a break from the band deal at the moment)...handle the software and web stuff for the site mentioned above.
I like anything with a beat, melody, and harmony.. grew up with (and still love) 70's - 2000's classic rock... blues... big VH and Eric Johnson fan... anything but (c)rap. (Can't wait for the music industry to come back around and require actual music in the music) :D
Main ax is an original Steinberger GL2T from '92.. various strats/teles... and a couple of Fretlights of course :)

After 30 years you should know drummers never get chicks - too much sweat & armpit hair.
Keyboards myself. 40years. Recently succumbed to midlife crisis & got band together then drummer sold his kit (probly something to do with chicks:) )
Saw John Mayall & Bluesbreakers 2 nights ago. Guitarist is a big Texan called Buddy Whittington who makes it sing & cry like nothing else. The guy's a genius.

guitar, bass & drums for 15 years... eric johnson / joe satriani / guitar metal type stuff..
never professional, mostly home recording, one semi-pro recording gig several years ago...

I've been a drummer for 22 years. I'm currenly in a garage country band called The Apologists (http://www.theapologists.com). We're somewhere between Gram Parsons and The Minutemen. I played in a Jump Blues band for seven years. We had a female vocalist, so in addition to the aforementioned Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, etc. we also did Julia Lee, Ella Mae Morse, Mabel Scott, etc. I actually made fairly decent money with that band, but the current project is just for kicks. I make a living as a television producer and broadcast engineer. I'm also an ordained minister.
You know how you can tell when the stage is level?
The drummer's druelling out of both sides of his mouth.

Lead Vocalist/Guitar/Bass 33 years. Mostly Rock, blues but have delved into most venues from time to time.
-
Guitarist, Been playing 36 years... played in my last band in 2002. I played in a number of heavy metal/hard rock bands throughout the 80's and 90's in 45 states and 4 countries. Worked through Omni Talent, Showtime, Showtime CMC, Brusco Barr, Southeast Entertainment and a couple of other lesser agents lol.
I played my first live gig in a bar when I was 14 in 1978, that was also the year i saw my first concert... TED NUGENT (I was beyond hooked at that point!) I was on the road most of the time from 86 to 93 when I knew I was at a point that I needed to do something else before I got too old... (It was either computers or learn 50 different intonations for "Would You Like Fries With That?") That's when I became addicted to Red Baron1 DOS on ImagiNation Network. (INN) The rest is history, because I got hooked on that game, I became a repairman, then programmer and now a network administrator.

Drummed and sang Lead/ and less background for 15 years. I was self taught and learned to read music in the 5-6th grades, while taking band.
-
Started playing guitar at about 13 years, had my first band back in junior high playing bass. Was still a senior in high school when I started playing professionally, 5-6 nights a week, every week for over 5 years, then I went back to school and got a real job. Started playing again a few years back...doing the typical classic rock/blues gig. Hey, its great guitar music :)
-
I have been playing for guitar for 31 yrs. When I was 14 and realized who Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin was I was hooked. Now just sit in the home studio and compose for my own amusement. Oh the rumor about musicians and women are true. Wife is posing with my Hendrix strat. She is much younger then me. Woo Hoo!:t :t Schwing:O
-
Hey Boyce,
How strange is this.... Both of us Jump Blues drummers... and both of us in the television industry!?!? I own a post house in San Diego. I have spent the last 3 week producing political spots. That's enough to make ya want to run naked into a spinning jet engine. Nothing like trading stomach lining for a bucket of cash.

Hmmmm, guitar in band in 68. Wish I still had my old Tele and LP. I have to settle for a strat SRV and '95 LP. When I retire I guess I'll light up...errr....just keep on playing. I won't say what I was doing in '68 so you can't do the math and guess my age. :) Wait!!! I think I got my first guitar in '63. I wonder whatever happened to that one, too.
Ya know, ya'll should get together and have a live band (jam session) at the next CON. And bring lotsa beer!!! I'm old and can't carry all the cases I'm gonna need anymore.

Thanks. I figured if I was only going to get one nice acoustic, I might as well get the one every other brand is ultimately compared with: as in "..plays as well as a..."; "...sounds like a..."; "sounds as good as a..."; "sounds better than a..." . And this one spoke to me as I tried it out in the store. All you guitarists know what I'm talkin 'bout.

Expensive! Pah! It's on at less than 50% of purchase price and only 3 years old. Barely used the frigging thing which is a total waste, quite apart from that fact that I play like a bag of rocks falling down a couple of flights of stairs.

I don't know Calan, a guitar that lights up like a Christmas tree?
I saw an add about 20 yrs ago that Neil Schone was promoting for something very similar. I like the body shape and contour of it, but the pickups look a little weak. those lights going on and off would probably pull from the pick ups to.
-
Nah... they are very cool... I write most of the software for them... :D
20 years ago they weren't. The technology didn't exist to manufacture them correctly. But now the fretboard is a polymer blend that plays better than any wood, has more sustain, etc. And if it's not hooked up to the software, it's absolutely impossible to see anything other than a dark fretboard.
You can get a little noise on the bridge pups if you are running the software, but otherwise they are as good or better than a comparably priced strat. (especially if you upgrade the pups, etc... like you would on any other off-the-shelf mid-range guitar). And of course a good set-up by a tech never hurts. The Pros have the higher end frets, hardware, pups, etc.
I carried mine (it's a white standard model; not a Pro) around as a second guitar when I was gigging, and played it several times. I rarely even get my Steinberger out anymore... just grab the Fretlight and jam.
Rock On!

I played trumpet decades ago, and I began practicing again last February. I was able to play for Easter Mass last year at a parish who has an excellent organist. Was really wonderful and the music was great too: baroque stuff that sits well for trumpet and organ.
Bummer is that in Casper, Wy there are hardly any playing opportunities and I've not practiced for a couple months. Chops are probably shot. lol.

Looks like an 18 from the angle of the picture. Shooting down like that makes everything look tiny.

I do notice a lot of musicians flying as i am a real life pilot as well, and have been since i was 16, i'm 28 now. I think musicians like the feeling of power and it has been said that pilots are right brain creative types. I'm a musician too i jam around Houston write my own music and am looking for an original band. I play guitar and sing.. check out my myspace sometime. http://www.myspace.com/groovegrinder Bye all :D

Been playing guitar since 1978. Was in a couple of really bad bands and once had the surreal experience of coming home to the dorm drunk late one night and hearing our band on the local radio (we later found out our friend at the college media center who had recorded us while learning how to use his new multi-track system sent the DJ the tape when he called looking for music from college bands.)
Now the proud owner of a '64 Fender jazzmaster which I named Dick Dale, (although Dick, I believe, plays a strat) that tends to gather a lot of dust.

The key to staying sane in a cover band is to grab the essence of the part, play cue's, or important riffs, and be yourself the rest of the time ;)
CJ's drummer and I are very interactive. We challenge each other constantly, tossing riffs back and forth. The rest of the band stays right with it!
I also play drums in an original band called Slugbait.

Started playing while recuperating from a football injury in high school. Learned three moveable chords and gigged as a rythme guitarist 'til I got married and kids started coming along (wonder how that happened?). Didn't play 'til I got scrambled off a motorcycle and was laid up for better part of a year (see a trend here?). Started playing classical to try and recover some right hand function (busted up pretty good). Got good enough to play out (light jazz, backing up singers, supper clubs, etc;) and made a living for ~ 5-years. Recovered physically and went back to real job which involved so much trave it was difficult to maintain music ties. Pretty much gig in my living room for fun.
