:O
this one is not so insane, ie not flying down 15ft above the face of an icy cliff, but in itself is testement to magnifcent greatness of our world, a fragile object falling in control over a horizontal distance of over 1 mile traveling at speeds up to 100-120 mph, then pulling the chute within 2 seconds of hitting the earth and calmly packing it up and walking on your way....... and the insignificance and petty mindedness of business culture and mordern lifestyles.

The first link didn't work.
That second one is just awesome! A great song to go with it to.
I remember the guy who did something similar jumping out of a helicopter.
Very nice.
-
Is your sister hot?
-
here is the correct first link. this is the guy who can marry my sister. not the other link even though he is still cool
http://video.google.fr/videoplay?docid=2330957636426165744&q=wing+suit&hl=fr

anyone here who can get me a go at wingsuit'ing, can marry my sister.
-
Cool stuff... im not sure id want him to marry my sister (if i had one) tho. Looks like he has a high risk of leaving he family and any kids they may have had pretty soon.
Flightrisk i think you can call it... or maybe he will just die soon :D
-
oh man, that would be so fun. i have had countless dreams like that. if only i wasnt so horribly afraid of hights.
-
Lol I'd call that guy an idiot with a deathwish. And no I wouldn't want any of that in my family. :lol
-
but to prevent any more BF genes being passed forward I think it a marvelous idea.
-
Batty, I'm not sure if you are aware that the lad is french. Once they go francophone, they never come back :p
-
On the other side of the spectrum, a french student struggling with stability and the up/down notion in general :rofl
The starfish (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f8WLIdGKs8)
With openings like the second one, the guy will become a master at dealing with linetwists in no time ;)
Btw, Saintaw, I made my 150th jump yesterday  :p

Congrats Deselys! they got to throw poo at you again? :D
I got a friend of mine over in .nl involved in this... he's become addicted in less time than it took me to type it to him on MSN. Next summer if I'm still on this forsaken continent...
Storch, you wish :D

Anyone weird enough to jump from a perfectly good airplane/helicopter with only wings and a parachute, is mentally unstable.
Anyone willing to do the above, and marry off his sister just to do the so said event above...
Is psychotic.
-
then wrap me up and lock me away right now, cos i ant think of anything more worth doing than this.
i always knew the french were insane. this guys is, and always will be, my hero.
-
Pretty cool. I wonder how you train for that? I can see myself smacking into a boulder the first time trying that kind of stunt.

Post some pix of your sister.
Thx.

Can you imagine being in that car seen in the video and have some dude blow past just above you like that??? I think I'd wreck the car

Just a little reality check here fellas:

Anytime you leave NO margin for error, you are being suicidal, IMHO.

that was COOL

With all due respect, your HO is bullcrap ('IMO'): those guys aren't anymore suicidal than the pioneers of aviation, spaceflights, scuba diving,... They take big but calculated risks and sometimes make mistakes. Granted, the error margin is thin.
If they were truly suicidal, they wouldn't wear a parachute, Einstein.

Can you arrange just a quicky? :)
culero (if so, we can talk ;))

Thank you for your feedback, deSelys. No need to be demeaning.
-
Gunthr, don't hijack the thread, please. We're homing in on Batfink's sister here :)

Wow human sugar gliders...
-
And, uh, de-whatever, when you talk to me that way, I throw out anything you had to say.
I'm waiting for a real response from you. I'm not impressed by what you have said so far, but I'm willing to listen.
I would like you to defend base jumping as furthering "science".
To me, everyone of you who dies, dies for nothing. Why don't you support your mother and father? Why don't you even support your own children. This is so stupid.
Don't even think about trying to lay the fear thing on me. I'm so way past you, it will take some years for you to grasp, esp. if you are lucky enough to have kids.

Gunthr

He can marry my siuster so long as he puts my name as the beneficiary on his life insurance policy.
Then after a few years he can teach me how to pack his Parachute :D

Did he order that suit from the ACME corporation?

I believe the Wyle E. Coyote bat suit is closer. It's interesting when you hear about 'Looney Tunes' antics in real life. Typically they end in tragedy. Apparently, the French can pull this sort of thing off. Of course, if Wyle E. Coyote had the good sense to pack a backup chute the show wouldn't have been so entertaining. Wyle E. Coyote, while a super genius, was not as safety conscious as we are today. Was Wyle E. Francaise?

would have been impressed if the guy did belly landing in the snow and slid down the cliff
:lol :lol :lol

Gunthr, I really got you revved up but this was not my post's first intent (I'll admit that there are more polite ways to express what I said).
You have to understand though that it is insulting to call someone suicidal just because his risk level acceptance for a given activity is higher than yours. Notice the use of italics: I like to skydive, I'm attracted by BASE, but the mere idea of i.e. cave diving is giving me cold sweats. This is why I never use the fear card when someone antagonize my hobby: even if you think that the skydiving or BASE rewards don't amount to the risks involved, you may be doing something else that would make me puke out of fear (like HOing FW190s in a C.202 ;) ).
It all boils down to this: are the rewards worth the risks? It's a personal question and the answer differs from an individual to the other. One thing is sure, you have to skydive or BASE jumping for yourself, because you enjoy it, and not for trying to look cool to the others.
What are the rewards for me? Experiencing a real true freedom during 50-70 secs, flying a canopy, having my mind cleaned from everyday's problems and the pettyness of our lifestyle after a jumping day, meeting friendly people... I'm far from a good enough writer to be able to give you a glimpse of the feelings.
I'll be honest, the possibility of death plays a part too: it is, for me, exhilarating to do something unforgiving where you have to display skills to survive. You also have to discipline yourself: this is not a game and complacency is a door left open to nasty things. OTOH, I feel much better in my head today than 2 years ago and by realizing that every day my be my last one (a simple fact that too much of us forget too often), I feel that I have my life's priorities sorted.
My 0.05 $ theory is that human beings, like any other animal, have been programmed to deal with life-threathening situations on a regular basis. Our society aims at removing those situations from our lives. While it is certainly morally right to do so, I'm convinced that so much people are dysfunctional in the western societies just because of that
Are skydivers and BASE jumpers contributing to the evolution of technology? Certainly not as much as the Wright Brothers (who must've been called 'suicidals' more than once back in their days). Nonetheless, the sport practice has contributed to make better, smaller and safer parachutes and harnesses for pilots, airborne troops, smoke jumpers,... and also to broaden the use of those devices (i.e. military tandems used to bring a non-jumper tech/medic/translator/... where he is needed). It is also possible that BASE jumping will eventually lead to the development of a parachute emergency system designed to quickly evacuate skyscrapers.
The BASE fatality list is well known in the BASE and skydiving communities. Some people on this list made (or, like the last entry, repeated :() gross mistakes or showed poor judgement; some did everything right and still died. Some were huge risk takers, some were more careful. Some were misfits, some were caring husbands and fathers. Most weren't suicidal. They were doing something that they loved, were aware of the possible outcome and (with one or two exceptions) weren't endangering anyone else (unlike the usual drunk Billy Joe speeding on the highway on a saturday evening). You may not approve, you may not understand, but please don't be disrespectful by passing an absolute judgement on something you know next to nothing about.
-
deSelys, I'm not against Base jumping or the sport of free fall parachuting.
my statement was that if you leave NO margin for error, I think that suicidal tendancies may be present, because it then becomes a waiting game. Unless one is highly qualified and and very highly experienced, it is not even possible to judge the risk. I just wanted to point that out to the potential internetard who might be thinking about buying a parachute and having his mom sew him up a wing suit and then go jumping off a TV tower....
Regards, Gunthr :aok

Base jumping is one thing, freefalling alongside a mountain slope is suicidal. :aok

I'm 100% with you on this one.
I forgot to say that I have 2 kids (8 and 5 years old) who are already bored stiff with jumping stories. I've also subscribed an extra insurance covering my jumping activities.
And finally, with this link, I'll be guilty as charged of trying to look cool to the O'Club :p :

Did you even watch the video? What he did is pretty friggen far off from standard base jumping. Every base jump I've seen involves a vertical cliff or a building, they don't jump off a chopper / aeroplane and GLIDE down a non vertical cliff as this guy did. One false move and he would have lawndarted.
-
MrRipley, I was just joking. I know it wasn't a BASE jump (it wasn't a 'freefall' either).
But most BASE jumps from a B or E object have the jumper falling close to the cliff face/wall. With a wrong body position, it is possible to back into the object in less than a second.

And people who go off and pretend to relive some of the worst moments in human history, complete with historically-accurate equipment and garb represent the epitome of psychlogical health.
