Hi, I was wondering if I could ask the community a few questions about AH.
I had been playing WWIIOL since 2001 and although it has it's problems, it did have it's strong points in that:
A. The aircraft match-ups were historically correct (ie you weren't fighting Spitfires in Mustangs).
B. Aircraft were introduced over time in a campaign so you actually got to fly the early warbirds.
C. You could fly missions that were more than just "everyone fly to point A and furball".
As I understand it, the game is based on arena(s) where there's four sides, but they are not country or timeline based. Are there any more realistically based arenas? Or is that what the upcoming Combat Mission is going to be? If so, is there any ETA on CM? From the little I've been able to find out about it, CM looks like it could be quite interesting.

3 teams Bishops, Knights, Rooks. The arenas are time based ie 40-42 such not quite sure lol. TOD ( Tour of Duty ) will be historic i belive it may be released soon or maybe in 5 months not quite sure.

There are 4 main arenas, early war, mid war, and 2 late war. In each arena, there are 3 countries Knights, Rooks, and Bishops. I'm not sure of the years, but early war is planes in early 40's, Mid is mid40's, and Late, late 40's. You can fly spits against mustang and such, but that alone adds another demension to the game due to all the "what if this happened in WWII?"
Combat Tour is going to be a timeline bases set-up were you will start a "character" and by joining mission and performing the objectives of those missions will move you up in rank. Check under the Combat Tour part of the forum for more info.

If you sign up you get 2 weeks free. Give it a try, you've got nothing to lose. Flight model is WAY different than WWIIOL so don't be discouraged if you aren't an ace from the get go.

And yes, there is a historical arena that features setups. The Axis V Allied arena has rotating historical setups that span the whole war and many less famous theaters (some of the winter Finnish setups have absolutely awesome maps).
There are also historical scenarios and special events. They're scheduled, but if you're looking for historical gameplay, that's your place. Formations, real objectives, escorting, etc. They're a lot of fun.

And don't forget the snapshots. Historically based missions, wed at 10pm, and thurs at 3pm i believe. They are in the special events arena's. Great fun, even when the numbers are low.

Unlike ww2ol, when you hit something, it will burn or come apart without using most of your ammo.

Thank's for the replies guys. Myself and another ex WWIIOL player are going to give it a go Saturday night. So if you see a couple of guys trying to take off, but looking like they had half a dozen too many, try not to laugh too hard. :)

May I recommend doing that in the Training Arena? Youre highly likely to find help there :) - if you need assistance getting things set up or have questions about the game.....
(and maybe i can brush up my finances a bit selling tickets for the tower at A1, best view over the runways ;))

I think i remember seeing you in WWIIOL, my name there was McCudden, had an account for a long time but only played it every now and then.
If you are looking for realistic matchups, you should sign up for the scenario -
